This is the first video I've ever watched on TH-cam where the first words from the producer weren't, like and subscribe. That said, what a wonderful video that showcases both John Petrucci's bottomless pit of generosity and humbleness as well as interviewing skills, including the respect he shows throughout by not interrupting and allowing John to speak, unrushed and unencumbered. Great video for this coronavirus lockdown, while I patiently wait for my JP6BFRKOA....I hope all of you at Sweetwater, Ernie Ball and John's family are all safe and remain healthy during this scary, scary time. 🙏
Got to this 5 years late but I'm glad I did. It's so nice to see Petrucci always giving names to the crew, it's so respectful and considerate from him.
It's nice to see that John is a normal guitarist like the rest of us, playing on the neck pickup a few times on accident, hitting that one sour note a few times, "don't play that note," definitely a guitarist I wish I could sit down with and ask questions we "stay at home guitarists" would love to ask.
One of the best and most down to earth masterclass I have ever seen. Great questions, lots of things to learn from here. Love how natural, human and realistic John sounds. If there are any mistakes, there are mistakes, there is nothing hidden here, no tricks... Really inspiring. Thanks, Sweetwater and John Petrucci for this amazing content.
Great video, almost like John is in your living room and hanging out. He's a very cool guy, I met him twice and he was just as humble and down to earth.
so i understand why, when i hear all dream theater song my ear not bleeding, because complicated gear, expensive gear and absolutely the man behind that gear.. john always be my guitar hero
Man, I wish we could see this kind of videos more often...it's so interesting to hear John explaining Dream Theater's songs, shedding some light on the intricacies of their riffs and solos - plus it's always nice to have a 1+ hour of our savior speaking about music...Please do more!!
Love the new album, got all the albums . Just started listening to dream theater a few years ago. Love your solos John. Wish I could have heard the band years ago.
Just wonderful. I would love a commentary recording of the album to pick out all the intricacies of the composition, playing, production and recording.
This was an incredibly well-produced recording of the event. They captured direct audio of everything and it all sounds so crisp and clear. The camerawork was more than alright, too. The only thing that could have been improved is if Petrucci had taken the microphone with him when he stepped away.
Awesome that JP would do a clinic like this, giving away a load of trade secrets for the creative thinking and collaboration that went into the making of the latest album, loved it. Fair enough, it's also a typical promo for his latest Majestys too, but I glossed over that bit, the message is essentially the same every year ... "All change (new finishes, tweaked pickups, slightly different wood configs) but everything stays more or less the same". Fantastic guitars and top of the range eye candy though :-)
1:18:32 - rare moment when Petrucci fails, and even angrily shreds a bit because of that. But as a good musician he knows how to keep poker face and say in the end: "You get the idea"))
I heard him make a couple of goof ups throughout the video, however, it made me happy to see my guitar hero mess up a bit on the songs he writes; just like I do lol
JP strikes me as someone who is not very consistent inherently, but practices A LOT to make up for it and works insanely hard to compensate for it, which results in him still being more consistent than 99% of guitar players
Very cool. I also use the Dreamscape + Flashback 2 into a stereo setup. The delay is nice and does the job. The chorus pedal is amazing. Don't hit that note!
Man, after hearing the way that they recorded his new album, and hearing the way it turned out, I really want to do this with my band now. Mind you, I’m in a fusion band, but this mentality still applies. At the end of the day, we all still just act like teenagers and play a bunch of tasty riffs and jam. It really rocks.
Sad that Mike Portnoy left the band. However, Mike Mangini fit in beautifully. He has a powerful and tight sound. He plays and keeps the music as original as it is on the albums. He doesn’t change any of it. Hes energy definitely brought Dream Theater right back on track. Like they didn’t skip a beat from losing Mr. Portnoy. Mr. Mangini is definitely one of the greatest drummers in the business. Petrucci is also one the greatest guitarists. He’s sound and melody are powerful in ever solo.
You what John also does a lot? He flips his pick around. Makes sure its wears evenly. I found myself doing that with my pencil when laying out rafters (I'm a carpenter by trade), and I felt really proud when I noticed it. Ha
The guy interviewing John (I think I heard John call him Mitch) sounds like every fast talking used car or insurance salesman I ever knew. Don’t get me wrong, he seems like a real cool guy, but damn he talks fast! Actually the mark of a very successful salesman.
@59:30 JP-"I'm forgetting all my parts" .... (during the last part harmonized solo w/ JR) .. ME: "yes, me too sometimes i'm forgetting JP solo"... Well, i guess it's human to forget -sometimes.
would love to have seen a breakdown of scenes from a memory & six degrees.. i find these Fascinating & Inspiring.. Is there a part 2 of this.. I really wanted to see the questions but it cut of abruptly?.
Looking into getting Johns signature TC Electronics pedal. Love all the different sounds you can get out it. I started using TC Electronic pedals not too long ago. Wish I could get one of the Mesa Boogie amps but damn they’re just too expensive for my pocket book. Lol. One day though. The new Majesty guitar is awesom!!!!!
That tone and his little 3 note flourishes on the neck pickup sound SO GOOD. I have been studying his playing for 15 years and it makes me super happy when I see him play his stuff the way I play it.
We are given the riffs from a higher power they are messages from them to be shared with others if we don't record or track them when they are given they will take them from us..it is not that we have a bad memory they see that we were not listening or in tune to them and they remove the riff from our memory and give it to someone who is/will listen to them, record everything they give you and they will continue to do so you will never ever run out of riffs and ideas trust me on this one John P if he reads this will know exactly what I'm talking about🤘🤘
@@quix99 I get that, been a fan of both bands since they started... They really are two different kinds of bands, Kirk has done some very good solos...
Kirk is a good composer, has a good choice of notes in his solos good phrasing, feel and so on, but he lacks technical ability to perform those solos perfectly, especially later in his career.
What others would be making fun of, conforted me as nothing... if John Petrucci can get a note wrong, but then shows thats not the one is worth more than getting all notes perfect, but not letting us know, we can sometimes make mistakes or not be totally perfect, but we can aproach a higher state of realization in our works, and you know, we can all not only seflcorrect, but cocorrect each other, fascinating mental expansion...
3:40 the "upstate new York" party was funny to me because I feel the same about California. I live in the bay area now and people call it NorCal, but I grew up 350+ miles NORTH of here IN California (Del Norte county)... THAT'S NorCal lol
After you watch, give this video a thumbs up and subscribe! 😎🤘

Oh my God hahaha :-)
Jajajajaja thinking the same here!!!!
😂
They definitely nailed it with that album! Superb, juicy, heavy, huge sound!
agree!! the songs are really well made. dont understand the people crying about that the album is not "heavy enough" or too "sellout"
Listen to the old stuff once in a while.
@@orangecarbad8892 they are rounding out the appeal of their discog quite nice for us fans having access to it all
Distance Over Time is a great album.
@@qrxtra9397 the album is amazing. Don't understand those views. Nothing sell out about it
Mitch Gallagher does great interviews, he always asks very interesting questions! Thank you Sweetwater and Mitch!
Thanks for watching, Lars!
John is my hero both with and without guitar. Truely a role model deserving praise!
Absolutely!
AGREE 100%
Dream Theater should use that studio and live there again for every future album!
They've built their own studio now.

I see Petrucci, I click!
Long live the Master and thanks a lot for this awesome and insightful video! 💪🏻🥳🤘🏻
Best guitar sound. Ever. Period.
Mitch excellently conducted the interview. Not easy and shows the depth of his knowledge. Great job!

Well for recording maybe, but his setup is relatively simple, just guitar, straight into the amp, with a delay and chorus if he needs it.
This is BEST guitar interview I've ever watched. Questions are very focus on the music and so natural, just loved it. Thank you Mitch and Sweetwater.
i love this guy hes a huge inspiration
I saw dream theater for the first time october 5th 2019 been a fan since 2001.

New album is superb, great video - thanks.
Best interview format i have ever watched!
I’ve only just got in to Dream Theatre and J,P wow ! What nice guy and what cool interview !
Probably their best album! Was blown away by it, and I'm not a huge DT fan.
Love the new album, got all the albums . Just started listening to dream theater a few years ago. Love your solos John. Wish I could have heard the band years ago.
Glad to hear the details around his song writing and DT approach. Great interview, Sweetwater!
Wow! Really enjoyed this, thank you!
Just wonderful. I would love a commentary recording of the album to pick out all the intricacies of the composition, playing, production and recording.
great video... great interview.... great album, great player.... great everything :)
40 minutes in Petrucci had killed half the audience straight away. The 3 different mics on the cabinet control the death toll rate to his liking.
He is a Zenmaster with that voice and his Amazing sound, he is the best !!!
What a gem of an interview, New appreciation for this album now, thanks Sweetwater, love ya work.
The Master at work. I love his playing.
I just found this video and had it on in the background. Really enjoyable and informative, thanks.

Thank you for this! Everything that was discussed was priceless.
Sounds so freaking good I’m so glad I bought his amp
1:14:09 John's face is like he's hearing what John Petrucci sounds like for the very first time Hahaha 😂
That's true Haha
Very nice and informative. Very inspirational.
Awesome video! Thanks John for all the years of inspiration!!
The new album is fantastic. That recording studio seems like it was made for that album, it sounds sooooo good.
