We've had the Ambient WS-5000 Weather Station for over a year now and have been very pleased with it. Very good quality and ease of set up. Can't go wrong with this unit.
I just purchased the WS-5000 tonight and immediately started searching for reviews on TH-cam. Glad to see there is one on your channel. Excellent video! I'm looking forward to getting mine even more now!
I have an AcuRite weather station, that has a tipping bucket style rain gauge. Spiders like to make a home in these and their web can keep the bucket from tipping. When they stop reading rainfall, I take it apart, clean it, and stick a couple moth balls in it and reassemble. Then it works fine. This was the manufacturer's recommendation.
That will be great for letting you know if you can go out and mow your yard, I have to go outside and check my weather rock. I like the ability to monitor the freezer as I also have lots of expensive beef in mine..
Enjoy your new weather station! I am a weather enthusiast and have built my own stations using various sensors, typically high quality second hand sensors from expensive commercial stations that I connect to microcontrollers. Its a fun hobby. Last fall I finally decided to experiment with the Ambient WS-2902C station simply because of the low price. So far I'm pretty impressed. After spending some time to calibrate the barometer I started sending data to Weather Underground, WeatherCloud, PWS Weather, Ambient WeatherNet, CWOP, and to the NWS. My only concern so far has been that the wind speed is often low but I only have this station mounted 15 feed off the ground as opposed to 35 feet. I took the extra time to create the accounts at all of those weather services above to setup the station to share to them. To me that has been the most rewarding and enjoyable part. Like others have commented the Davis Stations really are some of the best but for the money Ambient gives you the biggest bang for your buck. I have several Davis stations but the current subscription fees take the fun out of it. The Ambient stations while lower quality blow everything else out of the water with the ease and wide range of sites you can send your data to. Its pretty neat to have your data appear on the NWS page. The Ambient website has a lot of details on how to share to more sites than just Weather Underground and AmbientWeather Net. If you have an iPhone and you are sharing your data with Weather Underground I recommend the iPhone app called PWS Monitor.
Take it from someone with wind exposure that rivals an airport- the 2902 is very accurate with wind speeds and gust speeds lol. I often top our nearby airport (both of us on exposed ridges but I am almost 1000’ higher) and that is with my station being only 10’ above ground. I would say the wind accuracy is even a tad beyond my Davis VP2, especially my WS-5000 which is on the same pole as my VP2 anemometer. That last line said, people might be surprised how close a 2902/2000 or 5000 is to a VP2 in accuracy. And my VP2 is the 24hr FARS model. The AW stuff responds to temperature changes WAY more quickly (a good and a bad thing as spikes become more common in low wind + direct sun but the VP2 spikes too) and the RH is actually better on the AW stuff but the VP2 is known to have a wet bias anyway. Rain gauges are very close (my VP2 having the newer aerocone funnel) but would give slight edge to AW actually. WS-5000 has 4.9 second wind updates vs a VP2 with 2.5, so it is pretty close when compared to the 2902/2000’s 16 seconds and the sonic anemometer will actually measure those extremely brief gusts that can make cup anemometers struggle having to ramp up. I love my 2902 and recommend them to everyone but the 5000 is my favorite station I own followed by the VP2 6153. My 8-year-old WS-1400-IP also has a soft spot in my heart for obvious reasons, still running strong and accurately after spending a measly $150 in 2015 on it 😅
Very interesting! When I was in HS back in the 1970's I built a Heathkit anemometer (wind speed & direction) and installed it on my parents house. My niece and her family live there now but it still worked until about 5 years ago when they removed it when they built a new addition to the house. It worked thru many Nor'easters here in Gloucester, Ma. including sustained 110 mph winds during "The Perfect Storm" in 1991! Because I boat often I rely on phone apps for my weather info. Best Regards, Jay
We have an Ambient Weather Station. Our only issue is that the outdoor humidity sensor quit working about a year ago. I've mounted it on top of a flag pole to ensure good wind speed readings. We are happy with it.
Thankfully you can replace just the thermo/hygro sensor for pretty cheap. Gone are the days where it would mean a whole new outdoor array lol. Love the flagpole idea, enjoy!
I have an Ambient WS-2000 and love it. The ability to have remote temperature sensors is what attracted me. I have the main sensor array located on a 15' pole about 150' from the house and connectivity is never a problem. With 6 remotes and the WS-2000 I have about $500 invested. The only thing lacking is a heater for the rain gauge to measure moisture during snow events.
Do the remote temp sensors have the same range ability's as the main unit? I was going to just get the 1902 I like just seeing indoor, and outdoor. I am currently using a separate unit with 3 sensors to monitor other areas. Could combine all in one, although I am not seeing the ability to name the sensors the reading is coming from.
Great set-up! I have an Oregon Scientific and Ambient weather station connected to Weather Underground and Ambient Weather as well. I also have a weathercam on Ambient Weather, Weather Underground used to have a weathercam option but discontinued it last year.
I’ve had the Ambient 2902-A for a few years now with no issues other than having to clean the rain gauge periodically. I’m sure the 5000 has some advantages but if looking for a less costly option I’ve had good luck with the 2902-A.
I like your honest opinions on things. You got quite the woman there, seems she'll doing anything there. My wife is like that but you wouldn't get her in that lift extended all the way, maybe halfway. I've had a number of weather stations prior to the ambient 1200 (which is really old and no problems) and they didn't last. This one has been going for about 25 years.
I have been using Davis Instruments weather stations for a long time. They're well made, but if you have problems with one, replacement parts are available, and are for the most part reasonably priced.
You can replace individual pieces on AW stations now too. Ever since the 2902 it has become common practice for them. I love my VP2 6153 but I will always own at least one AW station for their FAR more modern user interface and out-of-the-box connectivity + general affordability. UV and solar radiation standard. No need for third party software like CumulusMX to get rapid fire WU updates (even paying Davis $120/yr for their top WeatherLink package nets you a best of 1 minute updates; I get 3-8 second updates using CumulusMX). Easier to own, set up, and maintain as well. My VP2 is my second favorite pws I own, close to the first which is my WS-5000. My 2902 not far behind as third, and my 1400-IP that is 8 years old is just the special one in muh heart 😆
I have used a Tempest weather station from WeatherFlow for some time now. Been a good unit. No moving parts for rain collection. The one thing I would recommend is the bird spikes for the top.
We have something like this, wife loves it. Like many of my purchase, she initially didnt see the point, then she loved it. Also good ... weather underground reporting. Like looking at the maps and seeing near by weather stations, its a sanity check.
I"ve had a La Crosse for a couple of years. I think you are required to get the wind speed by looking out the window and guessing how fast the little paddle wheel is turning. Then look it up from the airport.
Fancy! We have the Ambient WS-2902A Weather Station and like it quite a bit. Every now and then a leaf will get blown into the rain funnel but that's easy enough to remedy.
I’ve had the Ambient 2902-A for a few years now with no issues other than having to clean the rain gauge periodically. I’m sure the 5000 has some advantages but if looking for a less costly option I’ve had good luck with the 2902-A.
I rely on the weather as part of my job. I like having pinpoint location based weather observations. after having a Davis, an AccuWeather, an Oregon Scientific, I am now trying a Tempest. So far it seems to be working very well. I am not sure the rain sensor is very accurate, but the neighbor has a Vantage Vue Pro and has agreed to let me see his data (he doesn't want to connect his publicly).
Nah those haptic rain sensors are not always consistent. I love the Tempest but I would personally choose the WS-5000 over one every time. And did lol a Tempest + a regular rain gauge (if they offer that) would be nice
I got the Ambient WS2902A after our Davis unit was taken out by lightning. Not as many bells and whistles as yours but I do like being able to see what rain we got or are getting when not home.
We went to Menard's yesterday for the first time. It's about an hour away. Never made it to the second story. We will go back again someday. All because you've talked about it before, so we made a 'day trip' out of it.
Hi Tim & Christy. I have that same unit. I'm very happy with it. You got a great price on yours as I paid around $850. But it works great, so the pain of the price has eased off. Another great video. I like the family portrait on your mantle. Very nice picture!. Have a nice week.. God bless.. :o)
Installed my sons Christmas gift on the Rohn-25 tower today. I couldn't get the holes on the support arm for the ultrasonic sensor to align perfectly but I did manage to get the bolts to go in although I wasn't happy about having to essentially force the bolts into place. And I couldn't install the rain gauge as shown since I side mounted to a Rohn-25 tower - I think I'm going to change the mounting when the weather gets warmer. I didn't buy all the accessories but I plan on buying the lightning detector in the spring when his birthday comes around and maybe I'll buy those anti-bird spikes for the rain gauge if birds become a problem. The air quality monitors might be a good idea also.
Tim, Great video as usual. Not much use for a weather station for me but as for LED Christmas lights none better than those sold at Christmas Designers. Expensive, but high quality lights. Order now to beat the holiday rush which seems to start late summer! Enjoy!
Hey Tim if you know anybody who has an old dish network Satellite dish you can get those arms and brackets is the exact same thing just take the dish bowl off
I’m working on my second La Cross system. This last one has been working very well for almost 5 years. It give me adequate information. This one does not work on weather underground. They all need someway to record data to a memory card. They came out with a newer model about a year ago that has Wi-Fi. My first system never measured rain fall. For worldly forecasting, I follow Frankie McDonald on TH-cam. Not only does he give me breaking alerts, he tells me how to be prepared. (That’s always the best part). Simply Safe may have some temperature sensors for your odd locations. Wyze has some sensors for moisture, temperature, but you need buy into their home automation system. I will check you out on weather underground. Good job.
As a meteorologist, let me just say that the BEST home weather station money can buy is the Davis Vantage Pro 2. The reasons are numerous. Better sensors, better range, more accuracy, longer lasting, no need to change batteries, lots of options like 24 hour fan aspiration, repeaters, soil moisture readings, UV readings, bird spikes for the rain bucket, etc. The list goes on and on. You simply can't beat a Davis station. All other brands are in one group, Davis is in their own group. The latest iteration has even higher accuracy temp/hum sensors which puts them in the same league as government mesonet stations. Pretty amazing for the money. I had my Davis station in service for 12 years before I happened to stumble upon a brand new one at a consignment shop for a song. It was a model with ALL the options and they didn't realize it was a $1,200 station and sold it for $250. So now my old station is on the shelf for parts. But yeah, you can't beat these.
I’ve added the WS5000 to my shopping cart numerous times, but never pulled the trigger. Recently I have been reading the reviews and there are some serious concerns. Failures of any device can always be expected, but how the company deals with it is important. Ambient Weather seems to be failing at that. Apparently they were acquired by new owners. There are numerous reviews stating poor or non-existent Customer Service. Water intrusion and durability are mentioned too. Also having to return the entire unit for a failed sensor repair is not the most desirable situation. I’ve decided to go Davis as I had originally considered in the beginning. The Vantage Vue is a few hundred dollars more, and the Pro 2 is over twice the price, but I am now convinced they are worth it for many reasons. AW is in my rearview mirror now.
Hey Tim, I am not positive but I think that mount was made to go on the house. That is why that off set is there to get outside the roof line from the house.😉
Bird spikes on the rain gauge are typically straight like a pin making it impossible for a bird to perch. I suggest double checking your set up. It looks like a small bird would not have a problem perching on the bent pin. Otherwise you'll have to clean it frequently.
I think 3-4’ is actually best for the rain gauge as it will minimize the effect wind has on the rain entering the funnel but is still plenty high enough to avoid splashback from the ground. Just be sure it’s high enough to not be submerged in snowfall lol
I have the WS-5000, a replacement for a WS-2000 that finally died. The weather station is pretty good, but the moisture sensors available for it are junk. I put 3 in my yard, well within range of the weather station (they go in the ground and are powered by battery), to monitor my turf moisture levels. They worked for maybe a week, and even at that they would regularly disappear (lose signal connection) for hours or days at a time.
Seems like there is an attachment for the tractor that will push that post into the ground so you don’t have beat that post into the ground. Just a thought so you don’t have to carry that heavy t-post driver around the yard and maybe get to get a new toy
Tim I have an Acurate system here and have had it up for about 6 years. I have had to replace the battery's about every 2 to 3 years and have had no trouble out of it. you mite want to look in to this system .
You mentioned being concerned about Johnny idling while you’re up there- Use a high idle and put the rpm’s at 1000-1200. Diesel engines don’t mind being idled at 1000-1200 rpm’s. High idle will keep oil pressure up and will keep the temps up
I have a temperature / humidity sensor outside on the screen porch. (ThermoPro TP 357 on Amazon @ $12.99). Use the same sensor inside and one in the refrigerator. All three send the data to my iPhone via Bluetooth on one page.
Can you add your new wobble sockets to your amazon store they look like something I've been looking for. I was on your amazon store, but couldn't find the set
I've always liked these weather stations, although I don't really get the point of having a lightning sensor. I'm pretty sure you'll know if there's lightning close by.
Keep in mind that the temp sensor mounted that high will likely give a different reading than one closer to ground level. If memory serves, the NWS takes temp readings from a sensor 4 or 5 feet off the ground with the sensor in a ventilated box..
4-7’ is recommended (3-4’ for rain, 33’ for wind). Most will see a difference of nothing, up to 2-5F warmer for low temps (depending how much wind up high vs ground; same wind- same temp but no wind vs some the sensor without will always be colder). Daytime temps will be more accurate if anything because consistent airflow on these stations with passive rad shields is extremely important in direct sun (even my Davis VP2 with 24hr aspiration fan needed consistent airflow to avoid spikes or just plain reading 3-5F above actual, constantly). It’s a pws, you make sacrifices for 1-2 variables to have the best data for others. Rather my low temps read slightly warm and have better wind speed/direction and max temps than the alternative but that’s just me. I got the VP2 to ensure the thermo/hygro and anemometer were entirely separate though, and eventually I’m even going to separate the rain gauge from the thermo/hygro so that the temperature can get maximum airflow and rain gauge can be away from the wind. As best as I could considering I have wind exposure like an airport lol exposed ridgetop living
I get those wall mount brackets all the time for junk because I haul scrap on the side of my regular job but with people are doing away with satellite dishes I guess I need to start saving them
A country singer had a lyric that it's okay to keep up your Xmas lights up year round. You should maybe could look it up online with your question about the tubing that you are looking into.
Curious to see a follow up on this. I just put up the Tempest weather station by WeatherFlow a week and a half ago. Would like to see a good comparison
You could always use projecter's instead of Christmas lights they project a star scape it can be set to a still or animated scene the set up is easy just stick them in the lawn at the right distance from the house to get the best results 🏡😃
Been looking to get a weather station. Good info! I'm leaning towards Davis Instruments, but will for sure check this one out! Did you look in to Davis Instruments?
I'm glad my neighbor has a fancy weather station connected to the Weather Underground server, then I can still with the cheaper LaCrosse. But that is a nice set up. Have you ever discussed your flagpole? was it at the ranch when you bought it?
Hey Tim I'm 61 disabled and we are trying to start a market garden. I'm trying to get ventrac to let me use one of the machines to clear so.e area. How did you go about getting to use one.
Is it still working well TIm? I am looking at this unit tired of Accurite. I see the channel name changing with the other Temp sensors are you able to name those Freezer, garage etc?
Off topic, what sprayable fertilizer did you end up going with? I got the same jug of field and pasture from tractor supply and honestly didn't notice any difference. I also have 14k sf to cover and put the whole jug down. I would love to know what worked out best for you and cost effectively......
HAHAHAHAHAH. I lost count of how many of those Dish Antenna mounts we sent to metal Recycling after Customers dropped Satellite music or upgraded to network Based Music . My upright Freezer was set to -10f or colder. Super cold almost rock hard ice Cream lol Thanks Tim/Christy. Mike M.
How do you keep spiders, and their accompanying webs, out of the rain gauge. I've had a couple of different ones, and they always get clogged by spider webs and nests.
My system here in Scotland is somewhat simpler and requires no batteries or power source. It doesn't record results but provides accurate weather information, day or night. It also works as both a light source and a ventilation system, although it provides very little light during the hours of darkness, which is inconvenient but, for the price, we can't have everything. It was pre-installed in every room of our flat and, apart from basic cleaning, requires no maintenance. Each unit shows a dynamic, panoramic view of the Scottish Highlands, although this varies, according to your location. As far as I'm aware, the system is available worldwide and adjusts to your location without calibration. It came without instructions for use but the user interface is so simple that absolutely anyone will manage to operate multiple units with minimal effort. The only down side that I've encountered is the fragile nature of the main material used, which will break relatively easily if used incorrectly. Because of this, some care is required when adjusting the settings. 👌👍😁
How does Bullseye like his new house....??? :) Looked like he was pretty comfortable [ Clariton-D, 24hr, works for me with 3 indoor cats, used since about 2000......keep scooting in there Bullseye :) ]
How has it held up as of today and do nearby trees affect the accuracy of wind speed? Everything says to be 2x hight of nearest tree. Mounting on a 80 foot pole is not possible Highest nearby point is the house which the entire property and lot is actually the highest elevation point in the neighborhood. Most other houses and even trees in the neighborhood sit at a lower elevation and the chimney in the center of the roof which is actually even with the tree tops in my yard Its possible to mount a 8-10 foot pole on the chimney making it taller than the trees and 30’ AGL then don’t know how much the roof impacts the wind speed accuracy and temperature not to mention we are in the lighting capital of the WORLD literally. Any recommendations please. Thank you in advance
Those wall mount pole holder's are Dish Network/ Direct TV satellite holders. If you look hard enough they're everywhere people are throwing those away all the time.
I never knew a 3 point hitch lift existed. That’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.
I've had the Ambient 2902A for over 3 years now & It's been flawless!
I have used the Ambient weather stations for about the last 20 yrs.. works really well

Me to mines prob 10 year's old and about shot I recently had to calibrate my thermometer 🌡 10- and that's all the calibration it has.
These are great mine is about a year old some of the emergency services monitor mine
Wrightsville weather
You will love it, enjoy it
christmas lights: lightshow, shooting star - i bought these at the big orange box store 7 years or so ago, still working & look great.

Very good instructions. Thank you and may God Bless.
The wall mount posts are j pole/pipes. Plenty to be found on Amazon.
Weather looks good in your area 😊
I agree on the LaCrosse system...they are junk. After my second unit failed I switched to a Davis system that was fantastic
I can see it now…”Whether Weather, or Not” with Tim and Christy! It is fascinating. Blessings.
Please keep us updated. Thank you for being the guinea pig. Especially interested in the soil monitoring.
Thumbs up Tim , love the skid-lift also. Glad I am subscribed to you. Thanks for posting.

I've wanted weather station for awhile now but kinda forgot about it. Better start looking into one again. Thanks for the reminder haha
Wow! Interesting. Hope it does what you want.
So far, it is working well. Getting accurate rainfall totals is quite helpful for our work.
Happy Wednesday Tim and Christy.
My wife got me one, it works great!!
Tim,
Great video as usual. Not much use for a weather station for me but as for LED Christmas lights none better than those sold at Christmas Designers. Expensive, but high quality lights. Order now to beat the holiday rush which seems to start late summer! Enjoy!
awesome lift. Hopefully the sensor that close to the roof doesn't effect the temp readings.
Hey Tim if you know anybody who has an old dish network Satellite dish you can get those arms and brackets is the exact same thing just take the dish bowl off
They sell them as dish masts online. But yeah if you stop a satellite installation van... the tech usually has a ton they are willing to donate. 😂
You should invest in the lightening external housing & attach it to your wind sensor pole.
Been looking at same brand also Tim. Good timing. Great video thanks 👍✊
I just scraped 4 or so of those mounts lol
Another thing you should check into is Radar Omega!
Ah..... A fellow weather geek?! Radar Omega is a must for anyone in storm prone areas of the U.S.
Wall mounts maybe had at your local dish network installers
I'd love to have a wreather station!! I really enjoyed this Video!! Thank you
Thanks Barry!
Tim you can problay get those mounts from the old dish network dishes i have one i just took of my house..
Been meaning to comment really liked the reading of the Bible verse at the end appreciate that
Thanks for the encouragement!
Now I wait to see how long it takes my dad to get one of these.
I’ll just “tune in” to Tim and Christy’s😉
Well out tree is still up as I am watching you take down lights lol...
Curious to see a follow up on this. I just put up the Tempest weather station by WeatherFlow a week and a half ago. Would like to see a good comparison
A person can get those types of brackets at DirectTV installers company basically in there recycled parts bins
You could always use projecter's instead of Christmas lights they project a star scape it can be set to a still or animated scene the set up is easy just stick them in the lawn at the right distance from the house to get the best results 🏡😃
Please dont do this
Tim, Amazon has the wall mount antenna post assemblies. Less than $20.
Someone brought me several of them! Thanks!
As far as x-mass lights Home Depot or lowes during December months for led lights just have ta shop then.
Have you seen the tri-pod hanging rock weather station?
You almost need front weights for the 2 series with the skid lift on the back.
If the temp in your freezer reaches above freezing it is to late. Perhaps look for a temp between optimal and above freezing.
What happened to the old free gauge from the local co-op
I can't seem to find your station on either website. How far from Lebanon should I be looking??
HAHAHAHAHAH. I lost count of how many of those Dish Antenna mounts we sent to metal Recycling after Customers dropped Satellite music or upgraded to network Based Music .
My upright Freezer was set to -10f or colder. Super cold almost rock hard ice Cream lol
Thanks Tim/Christy.
Mike M.
Have several of those style mounts you can have. Is the PO box on here still good.
No. PO Box is no longer valid.
Davis Instruments makes some nice weather stations...pricey but buy once, cry once.
How do you keep spiders, and their accompanying webs, out of the rain gauge. I've had a couple of different ones, and they always get clogged by spider webs and nests.
Do you have the link to your Weather Underground location. I can't find it.
How old is that lamp behind you at 13:12? I remember having a pair of those back in the 80's :)
I'm in the market, how is it after 6 months? Does it display the the 24 hour temperature change? Thanks for the video.
Really like it. App shows all the history you might want.
Quite reliable, and temps seem accurate.
What is the name of your "system?"
@@jrbees929 We call it "Looking out the window." or just "windows" for short.😁
@@2H80vids 🤣🤣🤣Apparently, I _missed my afternoon coffee_ when I read your post!_ DOH!😜😜😜
How does it not have a Solar panel with it??
Now that you have had the Ambient WS-5000 for a while, would you recommend it as a reliable weather station?
Yes! Great job with both temp and wind speed…and no moving parts for the wind speed. Love it!
hate to be a bu but didn't you put up the lights with that lift?
Can you re-name the remote sensors so it's easier to identify them on the display?
Yes
How does Bullseye like his new house....??? :) Looked like he was pretty comfortable [ Clariton-D, 24hr, works for me with 3 indoor cats, used since about 2000......keep scooting in there Bullseye :) ]
He doesn’t get to come in very often. I think this was the 3rd time.
How has it held up as of today and do nearby trees affect the accuracy of wind speed? Everything says to be 2x hight of nearest tree.
Mounting on a 80 foot pole is not possible
Highest nearby point is the house which the entire property and lot is actually the highest elevation point in the neighborhood. Most other houses and even trees in the neighborhood sit at a lower elevation and the chimney in the center of the roof which is actually even with the tree tops in my yard
Its possible to mount a 8-10 foot pole on the chimney making it taller than the trees and 30’ AGL then don’t know how much the roof impacts the wind speed accuracy and temperature not to mention we are in the lighting capital of the WORLD literally.
Any recommendations please. Thank you in advance
I have been looking for a better weather station. All the others have only lasted for about a year
Those wall mount pole holder's are Dish Network/ Direct TV satellite holders. If you look hard enough they're everywhere people are throwing those away all the time.
