I never heard about Dream Theatre until my baby brother was gone, and his spirit absolutely carries on. One of his favs, laid him to rest with this beautiful song playing
Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where do we go when we die? What lies beyond And what lay before? Is anything certain in life? If I die tomorrow I'd be all right Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on I used to be frightened of dying I used to think death was the end But that was before I'm not scared anymore I know that my soul will transcend I may never find all the answers I may never understand why I may never prove What I know to be true But I know that I still have to try If I die tomorrow I'd be alright Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on Move on, be brave Don't weep at my grave Because I am no longer here But please never let Your memory of me disappear Safe in the light that surrounds me Free of the fear and the pain My questioning mind Has helped me to find The meaning in my life again Victoria's real I finally feel At peace with the girl in my dreams And now that I'm here It's perfectly clear I found out what all of this means If I die tomorrow I'd be alright Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on
Respect! 45 years is way too young. Life isn't always fair, but theres nothing to do other than thinking of the good times and keep a positive mindset. Lost my cousin, whom I was very close to. She died of a brain tumor just at age 28, so I know how you feel. Move on, be brave!
Lost my brother to melanoma, Dave said, with your voice and words you can make a difference. Such a great band and song. A close friend passed away recently who introduced me to this band. Dream Theater's music is always going to remind me of him but especially this song. I miss you Justin.
My condolences, buddy. My grandmother passed away a couple months ago, and I was going to sing this song at the memorial, but my parents didn't approve of the idea. So I think of it as a song for her memory everytime I listen to it.
I had a very close cousin who passed away at 23 a few months ago. I couldn't make it to her funeral as we lived thousands of miles apart (I live in Arizona, she lived in Kentucky). I drove down to Mt. Lemmon and played this song for her. Makaylee, you will be missed.
You can say what you want about Dreamtheater changing, becoming mainstream etc. but they've gifted us with some of the most beautiful, pure, magical and heartfelt songs I've ever heard. They are the very reason I've started to play the guitar, to teach myself how to play the piano and becoming an artist myself. I just want to say thank you Petruci, Mike, and Jordan Ruddes for spreading love and sending such a positive message out into such a violent and cruel world. Thank you for being there in our darkest times! :')
This performance put me to tears when I first watched it. From the beautiful intro, the crowd's interaction (all those little lights!), the musicianship and the looks on the band's faces, you cannot deny that this was something magical in the lives of everyone there.
100%. Score is simply perfect imo... the mixing, the orchestra, the band... and Labrie giving it all his got and having a blast. Raise the Knife (which was removed from TH-cam... sad) is also an absolutely perfect performance from Score.

There seems to be a lot of people being exposed to this song, album, or band for the first time so let's clear some stuff up. If you want to know what this song is about keep reading. This song is the climax to a rock opera called Metropolis part 2: Scenes From a Memory. All of the songs interconnect and tell a story. And no, they don't all sound like this. Dream Theater is a progressive Metal band. The whole album is amazing and possibly the best rock opera of the past 40 years, but I'm going to be honest about their genre so you go in knowing what to expect. Metropolis part 2 is about a man named Nicholas (That's the singer) who has vivid dreams about a girl. The album is based on his various trips to a psychiatrist to figure out who she is. (SPOILERS INBOUND) He finds out that he and she are both the same person and he was reincarnated from her. The album delves into why she was murdered, and him finding grief in that she never lived a full life but he did. Very deep, very good, and a lot of fun. This song is the grand climax where he finally understands what he should take away from the whole experience. "Victoria's real, I finally feel, at peace with the girl in my dreams" Victoria, being himself in a past life. So no, it's not about religion, heaven, atheism, anything. It's about a man and his moment of clarity. Sit back, relax, and listen to the whole thing. Hope that helped!
Summed up nicely for the unknowing but herein lies the beauty of music. People can take snippets of lyrics and melody and apply them to their own interpretations. For example, "if I die tomorrow, I'll be alright, because I believe" is the driving message behind the song's subject matter and that is what most cling to for their inspiration. However, that always doesn't work out. One such example is "Every Breath you Take" which over the years, so many identify as a love song when in fact, it was penned by Sting to address obsession and stalking and yet people play it at their own weddings for Christ's sake. lol Anyways, your explanation likely has made some non-DT fans go listen to Metropolis and that's a great thing!
I have been studying about palliative care while listening to this masterpiece, and I started tearing up.. There something about that moment that was capture in this video, that really moves me. I am seriously considering working with terminally ill claintes, partly because the lyrics of this song. Thanks Dream Theater, for being such a wonderful band. The spirrt does carry on!
It's an admirable profession if you choose it. Gotta be pretty tough though, getting to know and care for all those people, only to watch them die. Takes a special person..
This song is the reason why LaBrie is the voice of Dream Theater. His voice is made for this. Can't imagine any other vocalist personify the meaning and feeling of this song this well.
I'm 47 years of age, musician and have only been to 3 big concerts in my life. U2, Genesis and Dream Theater at their tour from "Scenes from a Memory". I'm so glad that i had the chance to see these guys live. This song is heart melting. One goal is to see Muse live in a stadium, which also are made for these big stadium events. This solo and the one from "Best of times" are the greatest ones i ever listened to. Beyond perfect.
+Dao Yang i think hes the best shreder, and definitely one of the best guitarist of all time, but you might wanna check tosin from animals as leaders and guthrie govan from steven wilson solo project, both are also really great guitarist :)
+Derbixrace I agree with you. Peturucci does has a lot of feel, but if i compare him with Andy Timmons or David Gilmore you can hear a lot more emotion flows through the music
This song is a masterpiece and this live version is autstanding then as now in 2021. Every band member that night were touched by the hand of god and I think this solo is one the best in music history.
thats right..spirit will carries on. and theres only two way. hell or paradise. so if you wanna go to paradise make shahadah. embrace islam. in syaa Allah your spirit will carries on to paradise.
Dream Theater, is the best of the best!! Magnificent song and masterfully performed by one of the best metal singers of all time: the great James LaBrie. !! 🎼🎙✌️🤘DT 4EVER
My mom passed away on 30/04/2008, and my brother on 03/06/2023, Dedicated this song to both of them and this song is the reason i become the Dream theater fans..
Favorite band will always be Queen, second favorite will always be Dream Theater. The guitar player from Dream Theater reminds me of Steve vai but he's actually more enjoyable to listen to. Way more melodic. Just my opinion
This song is for my Grandma... She's the reason why I picked up guitar at a very young age, and when she passed away, I lost my interest in Music, didn't picked up my guitar for months... But one day, when I woke up, I don't know, i've heard her voice downstairs that gave me a reason to move on, and from that day up until now, i'm still playing guitar and making music... Thank you for keeping me sane.
I'm in hospital since last December 6th. I 've had an operation to get rid of brain tumor. Beyond description life has been keeping on . This May 12, D.t. will come back to Aichi Japan . Without fail, I do join their live , to face forward , bring back DT tremendous power.
I had a liver transplant operation 5 yrs ago. Until then I had been dying for 3 years. When I needed comfort, I listened to DT, especially Octavarium, Best of times, ... It gave me sense of transcendence and knowing I'm not in uncharted territory. I am also a newborn christian and it actually went together so well. After the operation my graft was rejected. Jesus said to me I'm going to be well. I was waiting for Him for six months and then I was healed overnight. In that torturing and blessed time I was listening just my Terry Macalmon worship and ... Petrucci. Weird, ha ...
This song is so powerful...it’s chills me all the time. It is an huge hymn to life...is special.

Tenho o maior orgulho de ser contemporâneo desses gênios. Tive o privilégio de assisti-los ao vivo na turnê Chaos In Motion em Belo Horizonte! Toda vez eu choro com essa performance... #gratidaodt
John Petrucci is the reason I play guitar. That man forever changed the way I look at the guitar, and Dream Theater forever changed the way I look at music entirely. Every time I watch them play I end up feeling both extremely inspired, and like such a mediocre musician lol.
Same here. Petrucci is the reason I started to play guitar, and he and Dream Theater changed my perspective entirely about music. Great guitarist and a great humble man!
Dream Theater performing at the peak of their talent here. One of their best, if not THE best live performances. As a fun fact: This was recorded in 2006 in the legendary Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan. If you can sell out a gig there, you know you've made it.
About two years my brother and I saw DT at the 'Wiltern' in LA. He always let's me me know when the band is in town. And yes we did notice that there were actual GIRLS in line. Whatever. The best part is that they performed "Spirit Carries On" and I never thought I'd hear it again. Excellent.
I was at their concert once. It was a great experience. I knew about Dream Theater before I was even born. My parents love this song. They used it as their marriage song. But now they broke up, and we have a lot of bad memories with this song, aswell as good ones. I cry every time I hear it. It's still an amazing song. I teared up the first second I heard the first line.
I'm listening to this in a place of my life that it's really tough to be.. This songs brings me to tears, this song have a special meaning to me! Perfect!
Not sure if I miss judged or something.. John petrucci was using different humbuckers.. The steel ones.. Couldn't see the bridge pickup.. Just caught the neck pickup.. This song is one hell of a Beautiful emotional song
Yeah man I agree, but Mike M is really doing the best he can and like he said, he doesn't want to replace Portnoy he wants to bring something to the group that only he can personally. But I definitely get where your coming from
We promise each other to play this song in our funeral. And I did, my love. Transcend to be free from fear and the pain. And I will meet you again.

Where do we go when we die?

If I die tomorrow

Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on
Move on, be brave
Don't weep at my grave
Because I am no longer here
But please never let
Your memory of me disappear
Safe in the light that surrounds me
Free of the fear and the pain

The meaning in my life again

At peace with the girl in my dreams
And now that I'm here

I found out what all of this means
If I die tomorrow

in listening to this song you have to believe there is something after this life. one of the best ballads ever!!!
This live solo and the guitar outro is so much better than the studio version. Perfectly played!
Every time I listened to this song...Tears start rolling down. That feeling 😭🤘🙌
One such example is "Every Breath you Take" which over the years, so many identify as a love song when in fact, it was penned by Sting to address obsession and stalking and yet people play it at their own weddings for Christ's sake. lol Anyways, your explanation likely has made some non-DT fans go listen to Metropolis and that's a great thing!
wow. thanks man, just listened to this a few days ago. sounds awesome, I'll listen to the whole album. ♥️
Its how i take, that's the beauty of music
Great explaining 😁
@@rizamaulana5020 thanks i just copied and pasted actually from the lyrics video bcos this comment is very fascinating
Takes a special person..
great guitarist and a very humble dude
My vavorite song, the best drumer Mike Portnoy
In this song, Mike Portnoy shows us that he always makes Dream Theater alive. You guys never changed in my heart 😭
This song is the reason why LaBrie is the voice of Dream Theater. His voice is made for this. Can't imagine any other vocalist personify the meaning and feeling of this song this well.
That Myung's grace and finesse people will barely notice: that harmonic on the second last note at 9:34. Wonderful!
such an amazing bassist
The best bassist in the world
I'm 47 years of age, musician and have only been to 3 big concerts in my life. Beyond perfect.
just saw them last night (april 2019) - phenomenal show, especially the second half where they played this album in its entirety
Saw them play it in Detroit, April 2nd I believe. Great show!
John Myung moved! I saw it! I heard the legends but never believed them!
Listening to this song and shedding tears is worth being born into a human being.
It's March 2019 and i still keep watch this song 😍
Like mine
@@jay-pwon8330 good
but still this Mangini destroys this beautiful song every time he plays it
They are playing it this tour, go see it!
And this is May 2019 and I still watch this song.... next..
Perfect music from perfect musicians. The sound of the guitar solo is magnificent
I tried to critique this song.
But found not even a single reason for it.
That's how beautiful this art is,.
and people say petrucci has no feeling, im so sad about those guys who cant see
***** That .. is the saddest comment ... that is just so so sad.
Petrucci is by far the most technically advanced guitarist. I love his playing! Anyone saying petrucci sucks are nit pickers
+Derbixrace he doesnt need to,,Petrucci already put alot of feeling writing the song and playing the guitar
This song is a masterpiece and this live version is autstanding then as now in 2021. Every band member that night were touched by the hand of god and I think this solo is one the best in music history.
Easily one of the most beautiful and heart-felt songs ever written in history
Superb Song
Superb Guitar's man
Superb Singer
Superb Rock's Band
you forgot that they have a superb drummer. And, Beth you look superb, and I look superb......bla bla bla bla!
@@blutomosc9686 c'mon, they have also a superb bass player
@@francescopiccioni9241 Got me Francesco . You 100% right!
@@blutomosc9686 John Myung is by far the most underrated member of the band, yet he's probably one of the top 10 bass players alive
What about the superb pianist?
James was on FIRE this entire concert. Wish he could still sing like this. Must have been really something to be there.
"If I die tomorrow
I'd be all right
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on"
E ai galera da Fraternidade
Happy Sunday

if John play without feeling , He cant Write any of those amazing guitar notes. He's one of the Best of all time
Dream Theater, is the best of the best!! Magnificent song and masterfully performed by one of the best metal singers of all time: the great James LaBrie. !! 🎼🎙✌️🤘DT 4EVER
Master piece, miss this kind of music now day
The description before you click "Show more" is perfect.
LOVE this song!! And definitely my favorite version...the intro, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, etc. I can't believe ANYONE could dislike it!

It so Clear and beautifull melody petrucci's.Wonderfull sound .....
This group changed my life. (Thanks for being there)
My mom passed away on 30/04/2008, and my brother on 03/06/2023, Dedicated this song to both of them and this song is the reason i become the Dream theater fans..
Favorite band will always be Queen, second favorite will always be Dream Theater. The guitar player from Dream Theater reminds me of Steve vai but he's actually more enjoyable to listen to. Way more melodic. Just my opinion
Every single note these guys play is a bloody masterpiece
this is by far, for me, one of the best DT live performances ever.
THAT SOLO *_*
The solo guitar part brings tears, remembering those loved ones already gone.
Keep spirit bro🖤
As I am, endless sacrifice, erotomania + voices, take the time, entre outras. Inesquecível!!
THANK YOU, PETRUCCI.
Great guitarist and a great humble man!
your not alone
Jake Stephen highschool girlfriend is why i started. John is why i still do
If Dream Theater make you feel mediocre, you must be pretty damn good.
That man changed the way I look at life.
I shed so much tears, I simply forgot how to cry. Thank you guys for being so great.
John's tone in the intro and solo was out of this world.
These guys never cease to amaze me with their ability to create great music.
I'm listening to this in a place of my life that it's really tough to be.. This songs brings me to tears, this song have a special meaning to me! Perfect!
There is so much of Eddie in John’s guitar playing. Love this performance!
Not sure if I miss judged or something.. John petrucci was using different humbuckers.. The steel ones.. Couldn't see the bridge pickup.. Just caught the neck pickup.. This song is one hell of a Beautiful emotional song
Who cares, this way it sounds way better. :)
I feel like this solo in the begining is for me, for my pain and for my soul
This is the right song dedicated to the love one's of Kobe Bryant, and all of the people who look up to him. Rest easy Kobe. 🏀
This piece gives us hope, although we live in a fucking cruel world. This god damn solo is incredible!!!
Thank you for the music, Dream Theater!
Gosh! JP's tone is just incredible! Golden picking, technique, and bending! Bravo 👏
"Move on, be brave
Don`t weep at my grave
Because I`m no longer here
But please never let
Your memory of me disappear"
Portnoy really makes this song so live, missing DT with this formation
Yeah man I agree, but Mike M is really doing the best he can and like he said, he doesn't want to replace Portnoy he wants to bring something to the group that only he can personally. But I definitely get where your coming from
Miss u mr.portnoy....
@@evanschippers7447 the thing is... portnoy was more than just the drummer for DT.
I agree
