    Excellent, Spirit of the Law deals with the Age of Empires 2 Civs, so someone's gotta do AoE DE civs.

    I got a lot of requests to do Civ overviews. So here is the first one! Let me know what you guys think, since I am experimenting with the format a bit.
    I tried to do something similar as SpiritOfTheLaw, but I am afraid the videos will be too long with the in depth tactical analysis included as well.
    Let me know what you think. Should I shorten the 'overview' part and focus more on the tactical analysis? Or maybe I should make 2 videos per civilisation.
    One casually giving an overview of the civ, its bonuses and techs and then reserve the other video for an in depth tactical analysis with strategies etc.

    • @aeperez94
      @aeperez94 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      the video isnt that long, and u covered all aspects of it. I like it! keep em coming

    • @JRedAoE
      @JRedAoE 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the format a lot! I think if you focused a bit more time on the tactical analysis that would be good, but you have to remember that there are some things that you can't really convey in a video, because people need to learn "instincts" in order to know when once peace of advice would be applicable or not.
      I've found that as time has gone on for me, I learn how to say what I want to say in as quick and effective manner as possible. My first civ overview was 20 minutes long, but my I think I covered a lot more useful info in my most recent one, which was only 17 minutes long. You'll get better with pacing/flow as you go along, making it easier! While I wouldn't make two separate videos, there's no reason you couldn't! Do what works best for you!

    • @LonesomeDevil
      @LonesomeDevil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Personally, I feel like as long as you never go over 20 minutes, I wouldn't call these "too long". Also, kinda funny. I've been experimenting a lot with the different civilizations, and I took quite a liking to the Minoans as well. They're really fun to play as and I can see why they'd be your favorite civ.

      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for all the feedback! I appreciate it a lot. So considering all the positive comments I got I will probably do the next civ overview in the same format, making sure that I don't pass 20 minutes. Thanks!

      Some minor video editing showing numbers or percentages would be incredible. For example, when you were talking about the ship cost reduction bonus.
      Anyway, I know this is quite time intensive, so I leave it at your discretion :)
      Very nice video and looking forward to the next one!

    The Minoans were the complete opposite of a peaceful civ. they were pirates who raided the coasts of Greece. The myth of the bull is the story of Athens sacking the city of Knossos. Crete has had a reputation for a long time of fierce warriors and as a self sufficient island this is where the farming bonus comes from.

    Still weird how they can get Camel Riders though. There were no Camels in Crete.

    What's up my friends? This is Age of Empires Tips, and welcome to the very first Age of Empires I civilization overview on this channel. On this very first episode, I'll be dealing with my favorite Age I civilization, the Minoans. Also, as this is the very first civilization overview, I'm still experimenting with a lot of stuff, so if you have any comments or suggestions, let me know them in the comments. You see what I did there. I'll sell myself out. Wait, what am I saying? I still have an entire video to make.
    The Minoans is a civilization that resided on the Greek island of Crete. They are considered to be a peaceful civilization as there is very little evidence that suggests extended periods of internal or external conflict. They were mostly traders, and they traded with a lot of other civilizations in and around the Mediterranean area. Their most impressive feat is palace Knossos built for King Minos, of which some of the remains can be seen in this image.
    And a couple years ago, I actually went to see the palace Knossos myself when I was in Crete, and I have to say in real life it looks even better than it does on pictures. Minoan mythology is also pretty cool with a Minotaur and a maze and stuff, but enough about history for now, let's talk about the civilization in Age of Empires.
    Now, let's start off with the Minoans civilization bonuses. The first bonus is that ships cost minus 30%. And this bonus obviously comes from the fact that Minoans were located on an island, so the only way for them to get into contact with other civilizations was by crossing the Mediterranean sea.

    Great video! I love to play as Minoan, you can use their composite bowmen well in iron age if in high numbers

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! In the iron age you gotta be careful as catapults are very dangerous. But they are still useful for sure!

  • @DaddyMouse
    @DaddyMouse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I really liked it! The historical context made it easier for me to figure out the outline of the civ + it made it overall more engaging. AOE is based on real historical facts (even though it is not even close to being 100% historically accurate indeed)
    The mid section is basically a SOTL video style which is probably my personal favorite format and the ending is quite interesting too since it gives a more practical side to everything you've said before. I like the way you propose a sort of desirable strategy when playing for and against this civ.
    I'd be happy to see more of those series coming out in the future
    Btw what are your plans for the next civ?

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks a lot! Yeah AoE is a mixed bag of facts and fantasy. Lots of civilisations never existed within the same time period. Fun fact: the minoans were a bronze age civilisation and never really existed in the iron age. They were conquered before that. I am not yet sure about the next civilisation, but I know that the video will follow the same format.

  • @masteradi92
    @masteradi92 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great review! Just a few points - I think the archery range rating is a bit generous considering the pretty weak iron age and lategame trash wars (no chariots). You should also take into consideration the storage pit and other relevant upgrades and show them on screen like SOTL does (unless you didn't want to copy him too much, but it's still very relevant). Also, please don't take this the wrong way but you should use the civilisation here in plural, i.e. "Minoans do get", etc.

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback! I gave them this rating because Minoan has a top tier bronze age archery. Plus, with their range, they also hold their own pretty well in the iron age. The lack of chariots archers is not an issue, because chariot archers really aren't used as a late game trash war as most civs that get chariot archers also get scythe chariots which are better. So this is more of a stable issue than an archery issue. But my ratings of course aren't written in stone and perhaps I was a bit too generous in that arera and should have given them 4 points instead, but in my opinion it is a close call. The one civ that will get 5 points on archery will be the hittites. Personally I feel that the Assyrians would also get 4.5 stars, faster firing archers, but a less than optimal horse archer line in the iron age. Whether Assyrians have better archers than the Minoans is up for debate, In a direct encounter I would probably prefer Minoan compies as they get the +1 attack in iron age plus they are easier to mass and are much less gold inensive. On the other hand, horse archers are superior when it comes to overall performance. So it is difficult, but perhaps Minoan should get 4 stars and Assyrian 4.5. In any case, there will probably be more of these debates in the future, so once I have done a few of these, there will probably be a video with adjustments.
      About the upgrades, I will show them in the next video. I don't really care about looking too much of a copycat, but I just forgot about it. Good point!
      About using the plural, you are correct. I didn't really pay much attention to it while making this video. Thanks!

    @Joker-yw9hl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Only just found your channel. I've been missing out! I've been enjoying the Minoans a lot recently. No chariots kinda sucks but it does encourage me to be more aggressive over gold

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is difficult to beat Minoan in the bronze age, you have to be really fast and aggressive if you want to beat them with chariots. Especially if you have no chariot bonus. If you can't hit them early than siege becomes important (siege + chariots)

  • @bledferox6601
    @bledferox6601 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Love your overview,but I guess you should add more points for infantry,siege and navy. They farm bonus is indeed small,it's can help you in very different ways.
    It's stack pretty well both with axe or bow rush and also it's stack well with early scout ship rush.
    You shouldn't understimate that

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The Minoan infantry is rather average because of the lack of legions. Siege is debatable indeed. Sumerians and Hittites have better catapults, but no helepolis. But I personally consider those 2 civs slightly stronger than the Hittites, simply because their catapults are that more powerful. In the navy department they are good, but I consider Yamato and Hittite to be better on water.

    Minoans weren't peaceful but a fearceful naval empire. They were so powerful in fact that they were the founders of the Aegean civilization and had the monopoly of the Aegean Sea, even taxing and exploiting the proto Myceneans for well over 300 years. They had the most powerful seafarers of the Mediterranean and were the personal navy of the Pharaoh of Egypt.
    Finally, unlike most nations from the Ancient World it's very likely that they weren't conquered at a high point but collapsed from a series of economic cathastrphes that started some 200 years before the fall of the ancient world circa 1200 BC.

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot for the insightfull comment. I am by no means an historian, so I cannot guarantee, that what I say is absolutely correct. Peaceful is of course relative when we are talking about history. I guess what I meant by peaceful is they didn't conquer much else other than Crete and the Aegean sea. Which might also be incorrect. I have actually visited the palace of knossos and from what I remember, it is not known what exactly caused the downfall of the civilisation. I remember one of the problems could have been a lack of resources as the island of course isn't that big. In either case, some other civilisation jumped into the vacuum eventually. I cannot go into to much detail in the video, otherwise it would be way too long. And it is mostly about the game. But feel free to comment and correct me.

    • @BurnRoddy
      @BurnRoddy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AOETips You're welcome mate. I just commented because you said you particularly liked Minoans and I didn't want you to think they were weak or anything. And you probably know this already but the Unique Wonders Mod for AoE adds a wonder for each civ up to RoR and the Minoan wonder is the Palace of Knossos. BTW I've been checking some of your videos, great work! ; and your channel is really awesome! My commendations!

    • @OhhiBukai
      @OhhiBukai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The leading theory is the volcano that erupted nearby and the deforestation of Crete lead to their downfall. Then Athens came in and sacked Knossos which is where the myth of the Minotaur comes from.

  • @jakeroberts5353
    @jakeroberts5353 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks mate. My only advice is you could shorten the video to get more views from impatient people if you talk faster and use more text overlay at same time to get point across. Especially when you are stating units in a list that are good against that civ you should write them on the screen. Like "At iron age you will have more options" 1. Catapults 2. cataphracts 3. horse archers 4. elephant archers "will all work against minoan composite bowman". I had to replay it a couple times to try remember what you said without being able to read it at same time. Don't leave me hanging man your videos are too far apart, looking forward to the rest of the civs.

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks about the text overlay suggestion. Very good. I will try to incorporate that in my next civ overview. The listing is also a very good tip. I will definitely use that next time in order to shorten the video. There is no need to make it longer than it really is of course. I already tried to do that for this video, but there are always things to improve! Thanks! What did you mean with that last sentence, though? Do you mean that there is too much time between videos? If that is the case, I realize that that is true, but I have a very busy life and making good quality videos takes time. Especially for someone who doesn't have any prior experience in video editing stuff. I am trying to use all the time I have to make videos, but that's all I got. So I really thank all my subscribers for the support! And your support really motivates me to make more! So keep commenting and supporting!

    their composite bowman in the late iron ages can take out catapults as well as ballistas & maybe some archers also :xd

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would be very careful with catapults as just 1 blast can take out 3-4 bowmen. Yes they can take out ballistas, but they are not an ideal counter to them. Preferably use catapults against ballistas.

    Great video as always man ! Nice quality, i bit long , agreed on that , but it did not bother me , i was wondering if you could or if it would be a good idea when you display units to show their storage or government center upgrades (or market, etc) next to the unit tree, for example for slingers in minoan it would be worth saying they almost all upgrades except for the last stone upgrade (the example is probably not the best but i hope you get the idea)
    Edit: As a fellow minoan fan , is it worth it making the swordline ? For minoan i tend to find them quite useless as they tend get cut down by archers or cavalry , so using camels or centurions tends to be my go to meatshield, i did had a rough match where i used a combination of slingers and compies pushed back an assyrian chariot assault(but in my case i think that is quite rare) hence why i don't find having a lot of barracks(or relying on the barracks line) for minoan a good idea

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! For my next video I will show the storage pit upgrades. I am not sure about market upgrades since I also show them during the economy section. So jot sure yet what to do here. Btw, minoan gets the last stone upgrade (siegecraft) . This upgrade is also required in order to upgrade your catapults to heavy catapults.

    • @coolblade23
      @coolblade23 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A yes , you are correct on the stone upgrade , my mistake there. Ahm for the upgrade it was just a suggestion , it came from like SpiritOfTheLAw civ overviews where , when he displays a unit he shows some of the upgrades available for that particular unit ... again , it is just a suggestion and for what it is worth mentioning i did like the video the way it is right now. I did find that showing some of the civ history a bonus and adding your own personal experience was a nit touch that i personally liked.

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot! About the swordline: swordsmen are a good early bronze age rushing unit for any civilisation. If you are doing a short swordsmen rush with minoan, and you have plenty of swordsmen left later on, you can upgrade them to broad swordsmen. If you still have plenty of broad swordsmen left in the iron age, you can upgrade them to long swordsmen, since the upgrade is relatively cheap. However, if you are not doing a swordsmen rush, then you should avoid making swordsmen all together with Minoan. Making slingers and compies against chariot archers is a killer combination as slingers do a lot of damage to chariot archer while receiving relatively few, especially if you have bronze shield upgraded. Make sure to upgrade stone mining and you should be able win against an army of Assyrian chariots, given that your skills are equal.

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true. I did not mention,it, because taking down towers with bowmen is a very slow process even with a lot of bowmen. So while it can be useful, generally taking down towers with composite bowmen is a waste of time, because it gives the opponent extra time to make a counter army.

    • @AOETips
      @AOETips  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it is a game of course and in no way does the game accurately correspond with reality. Excavations did not show active Minoan conquest or military operations outside of crete. They probably did have some form of defence and a navy. The Minoans were eventually conquered themselves.
