Technical and Tactical analysis of the AoE 1 Definitive Edition of the Greek Civilisation.
Disclaimer: Even though I tried to be as thorough as possible in my research on the historical facts, I am no historian and as such there may be errors and inaccuracies.

I mostly used www.ancient.eu/ for the historical facts. All of the maps within this video are snippets from their amazing map viewer, which lets you view the ancient world throughout the ages. Amazing stuff!

a video about micromanagement would be great.
I mean :
- the purposes of all the commands to move military units
- how to use the various stances (attack stance, defend, etc) efficiently with differents units (catapults, cavalery, etc)
- how to defend ourself using micromanagement when ennemy attack.
That would be just great !!!

I don't really feel comfortable asking people for money. I really just do the channel for fun. My schedule also currently does not allow for regular video's unfortumately. If the channel grows and my audience becomes more demanding I might consider this, though.

My first aoe game was the original and I appreciate the time and effort put into doing these for this game.
I don't mind you taking your time with it.
Fun fact: there are no contemporary sources from the "Spartan military age", that actually define them as a military power. They did have better training, of course, but nothing that couldn't be stopped by the other armies in the area. The "spartan mirage" concept defines this imaginary relationship they had to war, and justifies it with the fact that most of the sources from the period were foreigners to Sparta itself. There is, however, substancial ammount of info that can link this "military power myth" to their political prowess.
Also, since we're in this topic, the battle at Thermopylae was definitely not intended to happen as it did. It was a small party, about 15k strong, which was supposed to fortify the area and wait for reinforcements (having said that, the fact they stood their ground in the face of such an extraordinary defeat is remarkable, even for a politically inclined nation).

Glad to see you back. Wondered if you were OK or if you would ever come back. I like playing as Greeks for the hoplite and ballista combo. I do wonder though if they should have access to the melee chariots or if that would ruin the uniqueness of the civ
I think it would ruin the uniqueness. Besides, I don't think it would make much sense historically.
@@AOETips Mycenean chariots? Were they not a thing? I suppose even if they were they weren't as much of a thing as with the Hittites or Ancient Egypt etc.. just a shame the Greeks are considered one of the worst in the game!

Fun video! I want to mention that the image used at 4:41 is a drawing of Alexander the Great's army. They used those super long pikes. Typical Greek spears were shorter.

The story about the battle of Marathont hat you covered is the myth version. In reality the Persians retreated back to the sea strategically. The idea was to make the Greeks believe that they won the battle, while the Persian army sailed to Athens for a direct raid. The Greek commander in charge however, was suspicious of the sudden retreat and so the entire Greek army ran back to the city of Athens on foot while carrying their full battle equipment. In the end the Greeks got there first, forcing the Persians to abandon their attack. This is where the Hoplite civilian bonus originates from.
Great video though! In particular I liked the analysis from a mathematical standpoint.

Usually I'm playing 4v4 with no rush 20 mins rules. Pretty much fight happens in the last age/end game. Roman is my go to civ, but not sure should I switch to Greek or no. Legion is cheaper, but 1 Centurion can take least 2-3 Legion units as far as I saw. Any suggestion?
I heavily recommend splitting these videos into separate historical and a gameplay videos. For example, I've no real interest in hearing the history part when it comes to Greece because I already know it extensively. It will also focus the video topic more.
But that's just my suggestion, do what you want.
3:15 it's modern day Ukraine, include Crimea. I live in city of Mykolaiv on the south, and we have Pontic Olbia - the remains of ancient Greek city. You can look it up on internet

Feedback: As much as don't mind math, I imagine a lot of people do. Especially going into integrals things just get messy to look at. I think narrowing down the explanations wouldn't hurt. "I used this math to get this result, making the greek bonus only have a 6% bonus in food over time"
I have yet to see anyone complain about it so i think its fine
For me is so impressing that he uses math to complement his points.
@@__-dg8sb It is! But keep in mind this is supposed to outline the civ, possibly for beginners. To make the game seem like you need to know integrals to know the strengths and weaknesses of each civ, isn't super attractive.
You are perhaps right, I wasn't sure what to do, but in the end just decided to keep it. Fortunately, a lot of civs don't have bonuses that require such theoretical analysis :).

The Greeks are one of the weakest civs in the game.... on random map that is. On Death Match they're almost invincible. But still they should have added metallurgy and perhaps even composite bowmen for the Greek. Historically they had real good bowmen despite being hoplite warfare specialists.
