I had heard and loved this S-S piece for violin and orchestra or violin and piano, but just discovered versions for clarinet, flute and this beautiful cello rendition by Timothy Hopkins. I haven't looked farther yet, but, oh my, each version is extraordinary. What's not to love about a well-played cello?

If you put enough work in, anything should be possible somehow. The question is does it make sense. I think this Saint-Saens can sound great on the cello (even though it was a real challenge). But I think there are some pieces that are dedicated to one instrument exclusively. E.g. I have heard fantastic performances of cello suites on the double bass. However, I could not imagine a bass player performing the Dvorak concerto. See my point?
