- Sol Gabetta performs the second movement from Camille Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 2, Op. 119 with the Konzerthaus Orchester. This live performance was part of the Opus Klassik 2019, Germany's most important award ceremony for Classical music. The cellist received the award 'Instrumentalist of the Year' for her album 'Schumann'.

I haven't heard of Sol's music before until today, but after seeing this amazing perfomance, and listening some of her work on streaming (like the Vivaldi concerts) all I can say is that I'm an instant fan of Sol Gabetta! 🤩😁

This performance of this piece is absolutely shocking! The life force and explosion of creativity coming from one single person on front stage center is electrifying. You can hear that Saint-Saëns was strongly influenced by JS Bach in this movement. What a performer she is!
I've never heard a cello sound like this. Her performance of Saint-Saëns' first concerto seems like it comes from a completely different soloist and instrument. Why is that? Not that it's a bad thing; I enjoy this timbre quite a bit. Interesting.
At the very start, after the double stops, she hits a very high A. Every recording does a quieter harmonic but she stopped the string and made sure it was heard over everything. I think that an amazing interpretation.
This is an inspirational artist at the purest and highest level of EXCELSIOR.

Notice how she’s also not reading sheet music this is true talent. And people still wonder why I think orchestra musicians are the most talented people in the world.
It's a common practice for the performer to learn the solo part of a concerto by heart. In such cases, reading sheet music as a soloist is rather a moveton.
Any solo performer is expected to play without music. There isn't any rule that you can't play without music sheet. It is more for the astetic and professionalism. Franz Liszt was the composer who started the shift from playing with music score to just plain memory.
