Welcome back to Mortomotiv. The Toyota Fortuner, a vehicle that has been known for its ruggedness, is gearing up for changes that could impact its future direction. Imagine this: an SUV with proven performance in challenging conditions, now equipped with advanced technology designed to reduce fuel consumption.

However, the important question is: will markets like Australia see this innovation?
The automotive industry is watching closely for what could potentially be a game changer as enthusiasm builds. This week, Toyota South Africa introduced a 48-volt mild hybrid version of the Fortuner. This new model has a 2.8L 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine combined with an electric generator motor and 48-volt battery. When combined, they can improve fuel efficiency by up to 5%, a big improvement for a large SUV.

Toyota wants to offer more environmentally friendly options in their inventory, and this addition is part of that effort. Although this innovation is now being used in South Africa, it is unclear when it will be available in Australia. This hybrid technology is now available in Australia on the popular Toyota Hilux Ute model, and will soon be available on the Land Cruiser Prado 250 Series. However, Toyota Australia has not confirmed that they will launch a hybrid variant of the Fortuner.

One of the main reasons for this delay is that Australia imports its Hilux and Fortuner models from Thailand, where the production line has not yet integrated the mild hybrid system into the Fortuner. Australian consumers will now have to wait and see whether this fuel-saving technology will come to their market in the near future.

The Fortuner has been one of the top contenders in the SUV industry since its introduction in Australia in 2015. In 2020, the Fortuner received a design update and various technology upgrades. Interestingly, the Fortuner versions in South Africa and Australia have different designs, especially in the front and rear styling. Despite these differences, the performance of the new Fortuner 48V in South Africa is comparable to the Hilux SR5 in Australia. Both vehicles are powered by the same turbo diesel engine, producing 500 Nm of torque and 150 kW of power.

However, there is one difference: the transmission. The next Land Cruiser Prado will have an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is expected to offer higher fuel efficiency compared to the six-speed unit found in the Fortuner and Hilux. There is a price increase associated with the addition of this mild hybrid technology. The Fortuner 48V is priced about 11,000 Rand more (about $900) in South Africa. This price increase is slightly higher than what occurred in Australia with the Hilux SR5 model.

Although the Toyota Fortuner is a well-known brand in the global SUV sector, it faces stiff competition in Australia. Sales of competitors such as the Ford Everest and even the Toyota Prado routinely outsell the Fortuner. The question that remains unanswered is: will the eco-friendly Fortuner ever make it to Australia? While loyal Fortuner fans wait for news, the future of this highly anticipated model remains unclear, but demand for a more environmentally friendly and efficient SUV will only increase.
