  • Lex's Upwork Proposal Breakdown | PROOF YOU FOCUS STILL WORKS
This week I sent one of the first Upwork proposals I've sent all year. The gig was in a niche I don't usually work in, and the client was already interviewing one person. The pay range showed up to about $60/hr but I applied with $90/hr and still get a response. So let's break it all down.

Everything in the end goes back to relevancy, whether it is story, question, keyword, thought, way of speaking, tone everything concludes to relevance, even the technical information about the client on the side helps you better establish a sense of them to add to that relevance. 7 minutes and already learnt more than watching 7 hours of other content about upwork. Thank you Lex...

I'm glad I watched this. A few years ago you seemed stricter about I-focused statements (second sentence in the first paragraph, eg) and I thought you were suggesting ONLY using you-focused statements. But in this video you're using a lot of I-focused statements. It makes the idea of writing proposals seem way easier.

The word "You" isn't what makes a statement you-focused, and the word "I" doesn't make it me-focused. What matters is HOW those words are used to prove to each client what makes you the best person to help them.

Lol, was listening to this late while getting some last minute work done and literally the first thought my mind had when you mentioned "for my own divorce" was "oh, so you're divorced"? 🤣😂 Thanks for the video Lex. I like that you clarified leveraging experience as a lot of us don't yet have any big names we can talk about. Just talking about anything that you've done that's relevant will help, including things that weren't done in a professional capacity.

Your comment made my day :D You can leverage just about anything if you find the right way to frame it. You're spot on with talking about what is relevant. After hiring a bunch of freelancers recently, I'd say relevance is the #1 thing I looked for before messaging a freelancer. Didn't even need to be their proposal. Just their samples. But it helps if the proposal is relevant too.

@@lexdevillefreelancing hi lex thx for your great content. I had a question. Do u think anyone without developing background can get projects for developers? The truth is I have been hired by developers to get projects for them and as far as I can see most client psychology tutorial videos are about content writing and graphic design prpjects which are relatable for other people. But developing is far more rechnical. They are willing to answer any kind of auestion i might have but still... i feel i need spot on informations. Do u have any content/ advice to help me with that? ANYTHING can be a great help at this point 🌸thx for reading my comment

Hi Lex, I'm curious what you do after you've completed a job and have a satisfied client. Do you do any post-job follow-up, referral asks, etc? Or really anything of the likes. Just wondering about ways to create business faster, especially starting out.

In the past I would reach out to the client and ask for referrals. I don't do that much anymore because how do I know their referral won't suck as a client? Just because someone might toss me cash doesn't mean they're a good fit for my services. I'm very careful about who I work with because there's too much riding on the line. These days, I only work with 1-2 clients at a time and I leverage non-freelance income systems on the backend so I never have to rely fully on client work for income.
