As a Chinese American who lived in Shanghai for 8 years, I realized how much I miss this city after watching your beautiful videos. I hope I could go back and visit later this year and try to reconnect to the city and make some friends there! Thank you so much for sharing
The good life in Shanghai, the price of Shanghai has increased since the opening of epidemic prevention, but it is still stable, and the goods are still rich, thank you for your film! 🙏
That fresh vegetable market seems like such a cool concept that we can't see here in North America wow. I feel like it'd be so cool to just be able to casually stop by after work or something and just pick up a customized amount of groceries that you need!
What a nice layer back vlog! Weather on Saturday was sooo good 😊 for me it was nice to see what Shanghai feels like when basically the whole city life is playing outside. What a wonderful city! I need to do more food shopping in those market halls - prices are waaaay better than in the normal grocery shops. I enjoyed this video very much. Do you know if the is icecream on Sunday this Sunday too? Or where do I get infos about that? Sending hugs
Thank you!! 😊 SO glad you enjoyed it. Yes the wet markets are so much cheaper! It's shocking to me still. And the icecream for breakfast event is over but I need to get the wechat link for you. I'll reply with it later so you can see it for next year.
Oh, Baker & Spice, that's a famous bakery chain in Shanghai city. Their croissant and sourdough taste really good. I love their bead and also flat white coffee. Affordable prices and good tastes.
At BabiMantou you can also get fresh soy milk (3rmb = about 45c), which we love. I haven't tried it, but there are sweetened rice porridge bowls with brown rice and other grains there, we can do a taste test one day. Now I want bobatea...And thanks for coming to Icecream for Breakfast!
Your vlog is comfortable and brings a sense of happiness. I hope you can have a chance to visit Tibet, China. The scenery there is also very beautiful. You can see a China completely different from Shanghai. Thank you for your love of China, wish you happiness.
@@melissa_renee You may take the opportunity in China to visit some remote places such as Xinjiang, and Tibet by High-Speed Train and enjoy the scenic view on the way.
awww the hand holding shot near the beginning was so sweet. I love bread so much. Croissants especially. MMmmm!!! Yey for Oat Milk. My body can't really handle "normal" milk anymore so that is my go-to. Look at you guys without coats on. It was below freezing here this morning and I had to scrape the ice off my windshields. Wow that is a LOT of food for $43. The size of those veggies too and quality look awesome. I don't know what I think about having ice cream for breakfast, but the reason why the event happened is really wonderful. I have not heard of the tradition. My teeth do not take well to ice cream since getting a root canal a few years back and getting a cap in place. I like that you put the price of things in this video. I have heard how there are no tips in several countries. That is so interesting. They probably get a better hourly wage then, I hope.
Some cultures would say tipping is a form of bribery... When an employee knows there is no tipping allows, then it's up to the owner to pay the employee sufficient salary, otherwise no person would take the job. I wish we have it here in the US. I'm constantly contemplating how much should I tip especially inflation up to the roof at the current situation. JUST GET RID OF IT! everything will sort it's out just fine and it make everyone life a little easier.
@justicepirate I had to let go of my organic concerns but you're right, the quality is very good. I don't know if I have been disappointed yet by a purchase there. I honestly don't know about the hourly wage here. I do hear that salary is quite low for local chinese, but regardless it's nice to not have to think about it!
@alphabeta4028 I agree. It would be SO nice to not have to deal with that in the States. Although, in other countries the waiters just treat you however they want because they aren't working for tips. I wonder if that would happen in the US too.🤷🏼♀️
Tipping just benefits the employer by having the customer pay the portion the employer should've been paying. It's honestly such a messed up system whereas in other countries the employers have to pay living wages. The US and other places with tips should've gotten rid of it long long ago.
Thank you so much! AND thank you for telling me that! I didn't know I could do that. I will try to remember that next time I'm getting a coffee there. They really are so yummy!
That 5 boba drinks delivery is about $35 + $2.50 delivery fee + $3 tax + $3.30 tip = roughly $45+ in the US. A burger + fries came out to be $26 delivered. I don't know how we're gonna survive here in this hyper-inflation. And the last time we could get cheap fresh produce was in the 80s - 90s, those days will never return. I envy you guys!
I hate the tipping culture in America. The employers should pay their employees including waiters and waitresses. Providing a pleasant experience is the basic requirement for the waiters/waitresses and if they do really exceptionally at their jobs, their employers should give them bonuses cuz satisfied customers will bring more profits to the employers.

What a lot of foreign travellers might not know is that most of the chinese in the younger generation lets say under 30s might not be able to speak english well but they can most likely be able to read so if you find yourself lost or just wanted to ask about things just pull out the phone use translation apps and if can't then most of the younger people are able to read simple english.
@@melissa_renee Since the early 90s the government encourage kids and students to learn english and take english course with the only problem being there were limited people to speak english to which explains why some are so excited to see foreigners and take the chance to say 'hello/hi' but unfortunately sometimes its seen as weird and annoying for some because it comes out of nowhere . Thanks so much. =) Yes, I've also heard its quite nice, but I haven't gone yet. My hands are still numb but they seem to be getting better. Just taking it day by day. Thank you for asking!!
@@melissa_renee I am very glad to hear the condition has been improving.... , but in the time being you might want to avoid sleeping on your ventral (belly) side of the body but try to sleep on either the left or the right side in a semi-fetal position, this will enable your C1 - C7 to have a better chance to be inlined with the T section of the spinal cord. You might also want to get a tempur-pedic contour pillow (item number 1138081) or a PureLUX pillow (item number 1083530), either one of them will help you to have a better spinal alignment as well as a reduction of the negative muscle tensions while you sleep. You will be able to find them both on Costco website. Now :) I would like to make a couple more comments in respect with the "Grocery VLOG" which I forgot to do so last time.... . I thought it was exceedingly, shockingly interesting to see a woman was trying to pluck the boogers out of the nose of her man in public..., in a bakery too! WOW!!! I didn't know that little bag of sesame seeds coated treats (those were candies right? We have seen them in chinatown) was that good, which effortlessly and single handedly put an ear to ear smile on Braden's face.... . That truck load of grocery you guys hauled home would easily exceed $150 mark in the States, but surprisingly and logic defilingly $3.12 for a small latte is pretty much a New England price... . You and your blessed family have been in our daily devotions.
Wow, you can get 5 bubble teas for the price of one in USA. Also, ice cream for breakfast sounds like guaranteed trip to the bathroom for me and I'm not lactose intolerant 😅
Sounds psychological to me. It’s not too far off from cold milk with cereal in morning. I wouldn’t have ice cream every morning but once in a while is fine and probably a good thing to shock the system. Not necessarily just ice cream but anything freezing or different
@@melissa_renee Yes. radish. When they started the business 20 years ago, they only served radish baozi. Now it is a chain store. They have over 200 stores in Shanghai alone.
Beautiful lifestyle! Come to Yangpu District to have fun if you have time😄There has urban park -- Gongqing Forest Park, and riverside trails --- Yangpu Binjiang riverside (It was completed and opened in recent years). After that, you can go to Wujiaochang for dinner and shopping. That is one of the four major big shopping malls in Shanghai, the place I really love~
By the way, the gradual end of the triple La Nina will make the temperature rise, and Shanghai will be very warm after a period of time. But It is not recommended that you stay until August, because this year is very likely to repeat the terrible extreme heatwaves of 40℃ for a whole month last year....
Thank you so much for the tips because we have plans to visit the forest in the spring! And the heat was quite hot this past summer but we are used to it because we lived in Texas. Thank you for the warning though! Maybe we will try to go north for a bit to keep cooler. 😊
@@melissa_renee In the north there has beautiful ancient Chinese towns in Jiading District(Nan Xiang). The limited time photo shoot in the style of Harry Potter is also under way(Himo). And I heard that Formula 1 may return to Shanghai international circuit in April. From the years I have lived in Shanghai, the best place in Shanghai is never just the downtown square😄Just enjoy your vacation here, Good luck~
@@刘逸-n9d hhhh I think Melissa said " try to go north for a bit to keep cooler" means they have the plan of going to Nothern China outside Shanghai. like visiting Beijing or Shenyang, Dalian, Qingdao, Xi'an some wonderful north cities in summer. hhh
I would sometimes use my iPhone 12 pro max but realized the quality wasn't great so I am only using my Sony ZV-1 in 4K now. I think it's so much better...can you tell a difference?
which district are you living in Shanghai ? how often do you travel to down town area in Shanghai from your home ? How far is from your home to down town in Shanghai?
The chocolate I get at Traders Joes finally went up a dollar(from $5 to $6), after 10 years of me buying them. They are like the rotisserie chicken of costco to give some perspective. Anyways, before the price went up, they were being sold out almost constantly, but after it went up one dollar, it's available every time I go get it, lol. I guess people don't want to pay one dollar more for it. That's good for me, now it's always available 😆. That's my addiction, chocolate. Anyways, the prices in your video are not bad, they are a steal. Things here in the states are still expensive. On a side note, you also don't need to pay for gas for your car to go get your groceries.
I MISSSSS TRADER JOES!!!!! No seriously, I need my red fish gummies. Haha...that is crazy that TJ's actually increased prices, you know it's bad when that happens. Glad you can get your chocolate easier now though. haha
Need to pay about 80$ for two cars every month even though we don’t drive a lot. Looks like the price will stay at $3 per gallon there and not gonna going back down.
Both Manner and Starbucks have "bring a cup, 5yuan off " policy. You will get 5yuan cheaper if you bring your own cup to buy coffee. Normally, a cup of Latte costs 20-25rmb, you spend 5rmb less with your own cup.
Western food, especially European style restaurants cost way too expensive here in China, actually you can live in more affordable and cozy way if you learned Chinese language.
Ah a little bit concerned about the price of veggies, because seller may raise prices in normal market if the price is not marked, especially for buyers who are not good at bargaining. Good expericence though.
$15 USD for those breads and pastries.....with that quality that is inexpensive. It is so freaking expensive now in the US and Canada. Bought McD quarter Pounder with cheese and bacon..$14 + tax...Highway robbery!!
You should consider buying an Xunfei translator, which will definitely greatly improve your ability to communicate with the locals. The effect of this machine is really very very convenient and easy to use.
I have studied English for more than 20 years, but now I can only read and dictate, and my oral English ability is almost zero, because the level of English teachers back then was just like this. So I agree with a gentleman's comment: write your question out and most young Chinese will understand, they just won't say it.
What a beautiful day,But just kindly reminder.I though you got ripped off in wet market. There Veggies is impossible to cost you 183RMB.Maximum 50RMB.Better check the price of every single veggies next time.
Thanks for the comment. At our wet market they don’t actually have the cost posted. I honestly can’t imagine it being cheaper! That’s amazing you think I’m being ripped off. 😬😊
I'm living in Shanghai too and also a coffee lover, although Shanghai has the best coffee shops all across China, but I think it's overpriced a bit here.
@kk66 Hello neighbor! I agree with you. Have you seen the m2 coffee shops? They are SO cheap and actually really good. But manner is my go to since it's cheaper than most and available. What's your fave? I am always looking for new ones to visit.
Shanghai has been more expensive than Beijing ,also , I think probably you haven’t been in China for a while, those years the prices increased a lot , local farmers deserve better income
@@melissa_renee The prices in Shanghai should be the highest in China. If you live in some small third-tier cities in China, the cost of living will be lower. Similarly, compared to Shanghai, third-tier cities are also very convenient, such as cinemas, cafes, public transportation, and sharing Bicycles, wireless payment, etc., the only flaw is that there is no subway. But the cost of living in third-tier cities is very low.
@@melissa_renee In fact, most Chinese prefer life in third-tier cities. The pace of life is very slow. There are many vegetable markets and night markets, but these are relatively few in Shanghai.
Melissa, wow, Natt is definitely a very talented artist and in the genre I love. Sure to buy some of her drawings when I am setup in my new place of abode. Yes, I hope that you will take away from the experience living in China where the collective is just as important as the individual. There are still pockets of extreme poverty I gleaned from the videos of Wang Yidan who wanders the rural areas and helped those children and family in extreme poverty. I hope China will continue to cultivate the "socialist" person so desperately needed in this current state of the world.

There's no homeless in Chinese cities. It's hardly see a beggers, probably once or twice a month, would see a begger, occasionally, see a bagger use QR code accept the donation. There's no slum in China. Though the residents in poor communities are less than 5% of population where are provided the running water, sewerage, cable TV, wifi access, sanitation, street lights, safety surveillance system, of course no drugs addictions absolutely.

Love the baozi, it is so cheap and delicious!
So good!
Try 耙耙柑(pa pa gan), a kind of tangerine sold in China in this season. It’s so delicious and relatively inexpensive.
I will look for it! Thanks for the tip!
Nice video!
Thank you!!
Wow, you can get 5 bubble teas for the price of one in USA. Also, ice cream for breakfast sounds like guaranteed trip to the bathroom for me and I'm not lactose intolerant 😅
🤣🤣 we will give you fruit then.
Sounds psychological to me. It’s not too far off from cold milk with cereal in morning. I wouldn’t have ice cream every morning but once in a while is fine and probably a good thing to shock the system. Not necessarily just ice cream but anything freezing or different
Wish u have a good time in Shanghai, and recommend Guangzhou to u if u planning to visit somewhere else in the future!
Thanks for the tip! And thank you for the kind comment. ❤️
Beautiful kids!
You are so kind, thank you!
I used to live in SH and I am shocked how the prices have risen!!!
That’s what I’ve heard! But still so low compared to the states on most things.
IDK if the stall was trying to rip you off, but the 183RMB veggies are a bit expensive, even in Shanghai standard.🤔
nice video❤
Thank you! Glad you liked it!❤️
Not sure what baozi you bought from Babi Mantou. They are well known for their radish ones.
Radish??! Really? Ok I will try to get that one next time. I didn’t see it so I’ll look harder.
@@刘逸-n9d hhhh I think Melissa said " try to go north for a bit to keep cooler" means they have the plan of going to Nothern China outside Shanghai. like visiting Beijing or Shenyang, Dalian, Qingdao, Xi'an some wonderful north cities in summer. hhh
how about the ShangHai subway? is it crowd ?
It can be really cool .... th-cam.com/video/h5QGp2Lyk-Q/w-d-xo.html and not always crowded ... th-cam.com/video/CiDbDLoGnWE/w-d-xo.html
It can be!! The peak times you can barely move. You're squished in like sardines. haha!
Gah i need to move! All our money goes to food it seems like. All the kids eat all the food 😂❤
🤣🤣🤣 come on over!! It’s very cost effective for families. Lol
May i ask if i can still use RNB money to pay for public transport or at restaurants? I dont have a wechat, and its hard to get one for a foreigner.
Yes, you can buy one-way ticket or shanghai transport card at ticket machine
Yes you can still use regular RMB cash to pay for goods and tickets. It’s just not as convenient. 😁
@@melissa_renee thanks. Just found out i still cannot enter China as a tourist.
@@stuchua1025 Now you can go to China as a tourist as I know. The 10-year Visa to visit China becomes valid again on March 15.
Did you recently get a new camera or has it always been 4k?
I would sometimes use my iPhone 12 pro max but realized the quality wasn't great so I am only using my Sony ZV-1 in 4K now. I think it's so much better...can you tell a difference?
which district are you living in Shanghai ? how often do you travel to down town area in Shanghai from your home ? How far is from your home to down town in Shanghai?
Hi Mike, we live in Qingpu. It's about a 45 minute metro ride into downtown. and we do it quite often. =)
Didn't realize the costs of coffee and pastry are almost the same as in the US.. Crazy. The local baozi shop is a much better deal : )
Yes, the closer to downtown you go the more expensive the coffee. Manner is a much better option and there is even cheaper ones but just as good!
Any western food are expensive in China, I think. Milk and cheese cost more than those in the US!
@@pandabearoceanpark nah Coke is way cheaper in China than US
@@GeoBerries It's a Trojan horse...in the very near future you will see land whales walk the land of China
@@GeoBerries but who wants to drink coke? ;-)
In China or most Asian countries, you dont have to pay tips unlike the US... 6:24 in US try $35-45
Yup, it’s something I’ve had to get used to for sure!
All the so called organic veggies in whole food that the amount you got your table at home would be like 5 Times the amount!!
Shanghai coffee price is crazy high 😧 compare with Bali
Oh I bet! Bali is very affordable I've heard.
Both Manner and Starbucks have "bring a cup, 5yuan off " policy. You will get 5yuan cheaper if you bring your own cup to buy coffee. Normally, a cup of Latte costs 20-25rmb, you spend 5rmb less with your own cup.
any covid restrictions still in shanghai ? are there any vaccination status requirements ?
No and no! The only thing still intact is masks on subways and in taxis. But not enforced.
@@melissa_renee that's awesome news ! :)
Have you ever traveled to other cities or provinces in China? China is huge and there are many good and interesting places😁😁
Nope not yet!! We plan to though.
Western food, especially European style restaurants cost way too expensive here in China, actually you can live in more affordable and cozy way if you learned Chinese language.
Oh I totally agree with you. And you’re right. I could most definitely live an easier life knowing the language. It’s hard though! I’m trying.
Ah a little bit concerned about the price of veggies, because seller may raise prices in normal market if the price is not marked, especially for buyers who are not good at bargaining. Good expericence though.
Yeah, we probably get the "foreigner" price.🤷🏼♀️
I'm curious how the language barrier of living in China as an American family has worked out.
It has it's moments of being difficult but with apps and also learning basic words it helps a lot!
Thanks for the tip!! 😊
I have studied English for more than 20 years, but now I can only read and dictate, and my oral English ability is almost zero, because the level of English teachers back then was just like this. So I agree with a gentleman's comment: write your question out and most young Chinese will understand, they just won't say it.
That is so interesting! Thank you for your comment.😊
我从bilibili过来😊❤
Thank you for coming over!!
@@melissa_renee Ask the price first before buying when you do not see the price. It's illegal not posting the price.
Do your children go to school in Shanghai?
Yes, they attend the school my husband works at.☺️

Thank you!
If you live in other cities in China, the price will be cheaper.
I’ve heard that!
I'm living in Shanghai too and also a coffee lover, although Shanghai has the best coffee shops all across China, but I think it's overpriced a bit here.
You are paying for the expensive real estates,
@kk66 Hello neighbor! I agree with you. Have you seen the m2 coffee shops? They are SO cheap and actually really good. But manner is my go to since it's cheaper than most and available. What's your fave? I am always looking for new ones to visit.
The most expensive coffee is from Starbucks ???
y'all vegetarians right ? I think buddhist temples have canteens that serve (inexpensive) food, look into that
Yes, we have that on our "to do" list. =)

the vegetables cost 185kuai?? r u sure? too expensive, I mean in china vegetables are very cheap , Shanghai is so expensive lol
🤣🤣 it can be. But those veggies are cheap to this foreigner! Lol
Shanghai has been more expensive than Beijing ,also , I think probably you haven’t been in China for a while, those years the prices increased a lot , local farmers deserve better income
Sometimes some vegetables are more expensive than meat here, especially during our Spring Festival.... hahaha
More Parisian's life style in Shanghai.
I wish I was Parisian!!
Don’t ever go to the same shop to buy vegetables. Definitely not worth of $183kuai.
Some keep saying that's expensive...but to me a foreigner it's very affordable.

You're too spoilt for choices in Shanghai
Your food is a bit expensive, 100 RMB is my meal for 2 to 3 days
wow, that's impressive. We also have a family of 5 to feed so we feel like we are getting a good deal compared to the USA.
@@melissa_renee
In fact, most Chinese prefer life in third-tier cities. The pace of life is very slow. There are many vegetable markets and night markets, but these are relatively few in Shanghai.
Do you know Chongqing and Chengdu? both are the most livable cities in China
Thank you for your kind comment. =) Yes, unfortunately extreme poverty is a problem in most countries. No matter the political system. But I hope i can share some of the beautiful things about his country. ❤️
Extremely poverty in China has been eliminated by the end of 2020 ( China standards, 两不愁,三保障 eating, clothes ; education, medical care, house )
