Your statement about not being able to get into materials like this (Near the beginning) because they don't look seasoned enough makes me wonder if you've actually paid attention to what basic training looks like in most military services? Youngsters are the order of the day.

So something that you might find interesting is that from everything I've read and heard they made this for 2 reasons.
      1. Obviously to advertise Halo 4 and drum up interest in it.
And 2. To show WHY Lasky is so trusting of Chief in Halo 4, to the point that he's willing to disobey orders and commit insubordination against his captain in order to help the Chief hunt down the Didact. It also shows why when he heard that call sign (Sierra 117) in Cortana's s.o.s. beacon he immediately made a B-line for requiem. He feels indebted to Chief for saving his life all those years ago.

What makes the ending scene, when they see Fred and Kelly’s faces, so much better is not only are the Spartans 15 at this point but Lasky and his friends are in their early 20s. So Sully was realizing they had their asses saved by kids a whole five years younger than them, and they’re absolutely huge. Okay, so. The Spartans were 15 at this point (few months up or down) and Lasky and co were 16. They underwent their augmentations when they were 14, they got a first mission (where Chief got wounded, promoted and decorated) against innies and then the Covenant attacked. Then John and Blue Team had the first mission against the Covenant, where they lost Sam, and after that the UNSC issued them with MJOLNIR, so they would have sealed suits harder to compromise than the modified ODST gear they had before. They're still the unshielded version of MJOLNIR, though, so it's just plating and performance enhancing armor (which is still fantastic). And the eyes of Spartan IIs are described as impossibly bright, due to their augmentations, and it's a great thing the movie was consistent with it. They're otherworldly, almost, with eyes impossibly bright and skin impossibly pale. It's leagues better than Master Cheeks being a regular dude in power armor.

And humankind and the Covenant, who had drowned for so long in each other's blood, were united, if only for the briefest moment, against a terrible enemy they both shared. "Look what the Paramount show needs to mimic a fraction of our power..."
    Besides the memes though;
The school exterior shots in this were filmed at Simon Frasier University in British Columbia, Canada - the same place StarGate SG-1, Battlestar, and a bunch of other sci-fi things have gone for 'future architecture'. I've been there a couple times.
The 'paintballs' are also *somewhat* realistic. We use a very similar thing in the Canadian Forces called simunitions, which are training rounds fired through real rifles. They replace the bullet with a tiny paintball, and use a small fraction of the gunpowder, but when you use them in force-on-force training you need to wear full-face protection to avoid taking out people's eyes or chipping teeth. They feel like airsoft BBs.
The Halo version is obviously a bit different, since in the lore they're supposed to air-burst before actually hitting the person, and they're full of a topical anesthetic which also causes fibre bundles in the armour to seize up and disable limbs. Honestly those additions are a bit much to me, since in training you'd just consider someone who was hit to be 'dead' or 'injured' and have them lay down on the ground - no need to potentially OD people on anesthetic during training.
For the pacing and characters, I liked that they went against expectations a decent bit. The finale was obviously Halo, but they didn't rush things, and let the set-up for payoffs have room to breathe with the character development.
I think all the limitations of budget just show how well they utilized what they had to work with, as opposed to being handed tens of millions and then blowing it on something no one asked for.

The little movie is truly one of my favourite pieces of Halo content. You can tell they really appreciated Halo and brought something fans far and wide could enjoy. With the limited budget I think they did a fantastic job working with what they had and still being able to bring you into this fanatical world where you care about the characters.
Funnily enough I had a friend who was a soft Halo fan. Played the games but never really dived too deep into the lore past the games. He had watched the Paramount show and thought it was alright. Recently we did a full game series play through and then at the end watched some of the short film content.
When we got to this he was blown away. He even got a little emotional when Chyler died, he was shocked cause of how little we are with the characters cause of the film length that he cared that much lol. In his own time he went back and watched season 1 of the paramount show and could hardly watch it lol. He’s like ok…. I think I’m seeing why it got received so badly now that I’ve been brought up to date lol.
Great reaction and glad you enjoyed yourself! This movie will always hold a special place in my heart and I will always appreciate them for making it. I loved the rock Chief picked up and gave to Laskey at the end. It’s a cool moment said with the least amount of words possible but such a powerful moment for Laskey moving forward.

      I disagree.
I was quite deep into the lore at the time and I loved this movie. It was clearly a B-movie and it made me think: "Imagine if they actually made an A-list Halo movie." But I never thought it was bad. Just that it could have been even better with a bigger budget. (The Halo series has proven past me very, very, wrong.) Nor did most of the people I talked to about it think it was a bad film. Just that it could have been even better with more attention. It's honestly the one piece of Halo media that I show and recommend to people who don't play video games.
The ending in particular was so spectacular when Sully asks how old they are and you realize everyone sitting in the back of that Pelican is the same age. And seeing things like the invisible Elite was done so well from the perspective of people who didn't know anything about the Covenant.

I didn’t know for sure if they were 15 or the same age as each other, that’s why I put I think but thank you for your perspective. If you’re still deep into halo lore, what’s a good halo book recommendation?

This is an incredible movie, I cant wait to watch you review it Sunday. I dont know if anyone mentioned this, but theirs still lots of Halo 3 videos used for advertisements that were incredible.
They are a collection of what is made to look like UNSC Military vets that survived the events of Halo 3. Its supposed to be far into the future, all the vets are much much older. It always got to my heart, because the actors all acted like they really did live through the Halo 3 earth conflict.... and they were all gonna die till Master Chief came.
My fav line was "I remember where I was... when Master Chief armed his Grenade..." Theirs a video with them called "Halo 3 Believe Campaign (FULL - All Interviews)"
Also I havnt checked yet, but you should also check out the Halo 3 ODST add " Halo 3: ODST - Live Action Movie (Extended Version) | HD" its fantastic, BUT I just am not sure, you might have reviewed it already.

A reminder that John (Spartan 117 / The Master Chief) is only about 24-25 by the time of HALO4, assuming you take his time in cryo after H3 to have his age 'on pause'.
He's robotic and doesn't respond well to others because, like all the other SPARTAN-IIs, he was a child when it all began for him. He has lived a life of war, and almost half of that was spent with Cortana riding shotgun in his head.

    • @historicalhijinks3058

Incorrect, Chief was born in 2511 and the Covenant War ended (technically) in 2552, with the actual ceremony taking place in March of 2553. Subtracting the four years in cryo after Halo three, and he's biologically in his mid to late 40s.
John didn't meet Cortana until just prior to the Battle of Reach in 2552, only about six or seven months before the end of the war.

I definitely appreciate how well they used their limited budget for this, the way they used lots of lighting and clever choices (like the invisible elite) to limit how many major VFX shots they had to do was great. When I first watched it I didn't like how long the early teen drama bits dragged on but rewatching it I actually appreciate the pacing as it really drives home how sudden and horrific the Covenant invasion is. All that teen drama with (relatively) low stakes is suddenly upended and everything these kids knew is wiped out in minutes. It's a central theme of the Halo series, humanity being massively outmatched by the brutal Covenant, and it's presented extremely well here. It also really impresses upon you how inspiring the Master Chief is for the rest of humanity, the super hero that can take on the monsters and win.

Noticeably small, almost "machinima" budget, very specific demographic, a slow burn before the action picked up, but at the end of the day, it achieved its goal in my eyes. Tells a compelling backstory for Lasky and establishes a more cinematic take on Halo lore. The slow burn soured things quite a bit for some halo fans, and I can't give it better than a 7 out of 10, but it showed me that Halo could do great on the cinema screen. Keyword "Could"

I like how “forward unto dawn” means something in the movies context, rather then it being just a cool name. It’s about Lasky moving forward from his sense of abandonment due to brothers passing. His mother on constant deployment. And chylers death at the hands of the covenant. By nearly sacrificing himself so the chief had an opening. He proved that even with no ammo. Or anything to help him. His ability to come up with tactics on the fly proved that he was, in fact, worthy. At the flash forward near the ending of the movie, where it shows lasky in the infinity before halo 4, He remembers that he’s fighting for someone else’s chyler. For someone else’s Cadmon lasky, So that a generation not yet created, can move forward unto dawn.

He's training to be a soldier, he either overcomes or backs down. Eventually it's shown to be bad enough that he could get a discharge. Though I never quite understood the intention behind the 'mechanic', since slipspace travel doesn't generally involve cryo. Oh well, great movie.

They reply "That's classified", and didn't say anything else; It's a very good choice of a one-liner that encapsulates so much behind the (unethical) creation of the Spartans and what they were originally meant for, which was essentially the UNSC using child soldiers to fight Insurrections.
