I feel this video so much it hurts.
I think it all comes to what you "think you really need". I see nothing bad in only playing metal and only knowing what you need for metal.
But yet, some months ago, I've decided I needed "more" and started taking proper guitar lessons. I never actually jam with other people and I only play covers (metal covers) but internally I cannot feel complete if I don't study "the rest", the classic things... this is a personal choice.

Always branch out. I've been a guitarist for about 7 years. Yes, I primarily played metal. I also branched out into gospel and I eventually started playing classical guitar pieces. Getting a sense of playing chords and melodies will expand your musicianship. I found that by playing and listening to different styles of music (my favorite non metal genres are punk, classical, folk, goth, dungeon synth, etc) will improve your musicianship. When I was fourteen I only knew how to play metal and that was why I sounded like shit when I played in my local church band. I then started to play classical guitar and then I got better at playing gospel. Eventually I learned that I became even better at playing metal to the point where I created my own one man black metal band (don't worry, my band is pure black metal). Expand your knowledge of music and it could help you improve in whatever you decide to play.

As a metal/metalcore guitarist who decided to study jazz on a conservatory I am telling you metalheads...
Always try to expand and learn your skills and knowledge by playing different styles. Trust me that if you take guitar seriously it is very useful to know your chords and scales and intervals.
I also used to think that knowing only powerchords and one minor scale is enough. Its not ! Just by playing with a pianist you will realize that it is not enough to tell him the notes just by numbers ("play 5 7 8 on the fifth string etc" :D )
And another very important thing. DO NOT play only with heavy distortion. The best way to improve your dynamics is the clean tone.

i jammed out with a guitarist once, and i was the metal person instantly playing powerchords.
And he went like completly confused: oh well uh, okay, let me try this, this may fit more.

Ah to be the guy who only knows Jazz, blues, and prog mathcorre type of tunes. Reminds me of a session I had with a friend once, and I started doing some mathcore tap patterns, and he was like woah no touchy feely stuff please.
I have also been in the metalhead situation, but mostly the artsy guitar nerd stuff that can come as pretentious even when you just want to Jam to something someone anything to accompany you regardless of genere.
