Absolutely gutted for Slatter, he would've been phenomenal for troop morale. The fact he was doing all that with a back problem shows how much he wanted it, and the troop commander seemed genuinely gutted that he didn't pass out.

Terry John is a good dude. He's got a good head on his shoulders. While the rest of the troop seem to carry that childlike fascination with the idea of "killing bad guys" he actually considers the moral and ethnical implications of taking a life and is disturbed by the prospect of having to do so, but yet a willingness to do it only if it's required.
Does having a moral compass and wanting to go to Iraq/Afghanistan for the purpose of helping people out instead of what the others said which was 'too kill stuff' make him a 'shit soldier'? He passed all the physical training except for the jog which was due to his compartment syndrome and even then he showed impressive amounts of determination to push through it. The thing British/Australian/Canadian forces have over the likes of Americans is that there soldiers are capable of independent thought and have a good sense of right and wrong, not like their 'gun ho-lets kill everything-fuck civilians-maximum collateral damage' counterparts

How come everyone else remembered the password and remembered to do their helmet up? they are just as new to the military.
Takes me back to basic training at the guards depot in the 80,s Bearsted from morning till night, kit inspections every hour through the night, changing parades, show parades on the square for the littlest fault and relentless drill, gives me shivers thinking about it now but if I was a young man again I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
A good friend of mine joined the army, passed out and then a month or two before deployment... they were on a training excersise and a jeep flipped onto its side. He wasn't injured as far as he could tell, but had a very minor back injury therefore had to be relieved. Really sad, but thats the British Army.

Alex James I have family in the military (can't say where), and yes, I have done some of the training they do e.g the 30 mile march and got 7 hours and 22 min, and that's with the required weight. I've also done the 4 mile speed march with the exact required weight, and got 39 minutes. I did that all for fun while out in the country 2 years ago. I'm in much better shape than I was now. He never trained. He never prepared himself for what was to come. Now he's working in some shitty section, because he wasn't man enough to fight through the pain. I watched a documentary, where a lad was running on a broken leg, a broken fucking leg. He kept running and running, then collapsed. He, nor the corporals e.t.c knew that his leg was broken, but he got through it. He then was out for a while and became a commando later on with another troop. This guy was full of excuses from the START. I"I wanna go home, it's not for ". Get the fuck out of here, man. (nothing personal to you) It's just a conversation. Stay well. :)
TheLondonCyclist It doesn't change the fact that it is an incredibly difficult thing to do and there is no shame in crying because you haven't succeeded. Unless you've got the same syndrome he has got you have no right to comment on him not dealing with the pain. A broken leg doesn't necessarily stop the muscles contracting like what this guy had.
You need to have a motivation to be a recruit it's so very important because difficult times may come but motivation will let you go through it I am talking as a police officer who was once a recruit

Well the United States as a whole was a british colony. So I am not surprised that the US has a lot of similarities. Still, it is interesting to see how the brits do their training since I have never had a chance to see it. As far as "stealing" the language, I wouldn't go that far. It's more of we had it the whole time and then when we left, we developed it differently than you guys. Kinda like if you gave your kid a car that was the same make and model as your's and when he left for college, he made a few modifications to it while you didn't.

Did you know that? :D Also, aluminum was first used in Britain, too, but we renamed it "aluminium". I like researching stuff :D

so this is like basic military discipline and infantry training combined into one pipeline. In the US Marine Corps we have 13 weeks of basic training than 4 weeks of combat training. after that you have your job training. which can be anywhere from 2-60 weeks of additional training
The Royal Marines get 32 weeks basic training that does both basic military discipline and infantry training type stuff. Once complete they do 12 - 18 months general duties. After that point they can specialise in something like heavy weapons or communications or something. There are quite a few specialisations available with varying lengths of training.
I have such an itch to do this. Every time I look at this, I see myself. I hope, as soon as I finish my degree, to ship over; across the Atlantic, and serve. Until then, I'm going to crack on

It is genuinely the No1 reason overseas lads leave so you'd best get your head around it ASAP, or just try and get on a recruit troop that starts in March (that means you'll get your early Field Exercises done when the weather is ok and you'll be acclimated by the time winter comes!). I hope it pans out for you mate, it's the best job in the world!
this is so lax in the barracks that i didnt think it was real. I think that ability to add their own small touch and the more personal touch of the officers at select times really helps with the morale.
After serving 12 years in the United States Army, including serving as a OSUT Drill Sergeant for Combat Engineers, and serving two tours in Iraq; British Military Training, in general, is a total mind screw! Because they start out Soft, and Lighthearted, almost accommodating…and then they start turning the screws. Versus most US Army training begins with the most Intensity and Insensitive and gradually becomes more accommodating to the learning process. I guess…to each their own…but it would have me wanting to slap someone 😂

@@JammyDodger45 as it stands RMC ; would be keen to perhaps later on go commissioned. I'm started with getting myself up to a mildly satisfactory level of fitness last year and for the next three its just gonna be a steady growth. I've never wanted something this badly in my life and for as long (since I was able to talk) so yea I really hope i'm not the former either😅

It is genuinely the No1 reason overseas lads leave so you'd best get your head around it ASAP, or just try and get on a recruit troop that starts in March (that means you'll get your early Field Exercises done when the weather is ok and you'll be acclimated by the time winter comes!).

What's your point mate? It's harder to soldier with body armour on less mobility more weight on you.
When did they start issuing body armour on live firing ranges, didn't have that in the seventies with SLRs
When we started wearing it in combat. There's no point learning to shoot in a different kit to that which you'll wear on operations.
this is so lax in the barracks that i didnt think it was real. I think that ability to add their own small touch and the more personal touch of the officers at select times really helps with the morale.

After serving 12 years in the United States Army, including serving as a OSUT Drill Sergeant for Combat Engineers, and serving two tours in Iraq; British Military Training, in general, is a total mind screw! Because they start out Soft, and Lighthearted, almost accommodating…and then they start turning the screws. Versus most US Army training begins with the most Intensity and Insensitive and gradually becomes more accommodating to the learning process. I guess…to each their own…but it would have me wanting to slap someone 😂

His back issue was serious enough to preclude him from trying again.
A lesser injury would have allowed him to carry on our come back and try once recovered.
