  • Heritage Trout Mapping Episode: 2, Part: 1
    In this episode, I go deep into the Golden Trout Wilderness searching for the "Real" Golden Trout of Volcano Creek. Following along with a 1905 publication ...The Golden Trout of the Southern High Sierras I explore Horseshoe Meadows, Mulkey Creek, South Fork of the Kern, Golden Trout Creek and Tunnel Meadows. This catch qualifies for the California Heritage Trout Challenge.

    I just bought a property 5 miles from where little Kern meets the Kern. I am going to head out from there sometime in the next few weeks and spend some time back in there. Maybe someday I will guide the area. Oh and when you come up on a small creek ,,,,,, act like a cloud LOL Something I learned about my immediate area is that some of these small creeks in steep areas have very small ponds carved out of rock. Now you may think there is nothing there but some are like trout aquariums and I have seem some 3 pound rainbows sitting like they are the only thing that matters. Finding these requires a lot of rock climbing sometimes but wow what a shock when you do .

    I always respect when anglers don’t share their locations. Ironically I have been doing a lot of research for a bucket list trip to catch the Golden Trout and you are doing pretty much the exact route I was planning! What a treat to find this video. I’m planning on a trip next month for my birthday. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

    Nice video, thank you. My father and I went there in the early 90s. We caught the biggest volcano goldens were the volcano rock actually meets the creek. Largest 11 and a half inches. Beautiful fish and memories. Happy I found this video!

    My son and I passed through the Golden Trout Wilderness on our JMT thru hike. We caught Golden Trout on our way through. I”m from PA but we’ve been to CA many times in the past few years. We have 4 of the Heritage Trout under our belts so far. Great videos man! Will be watching them all.

    Excellent content, much better than the usual YT whooping and hollering with no useful information. Much appreciated. PIcked up a trick that might be useful? When I forget to wet my hand, or for anyone who has trouble bending down to the water...just put your hand on the bottom of the wet net and Bob's your uncle.

    yeah I've been up and around those parts back in the late 90s looking for those species of golden trout. there is totally a major difference in the volcano and Volcanic Golden's , beauty footage by the way. the one thing I'm not a fan of, up in that wilderness is the livestock and fence. If there is going to be so much effort, time, and money to protect a species then keep it completely wild wilderness. I use to work for the Department of Fish and game and I was lucky enough to be a part of dropping fish from a plane into Yosemite today that had all change.

    27:20. I read the reason gowboys planted trout into Cottonwood creek is so they could catch fish for food while driving cattle to and from the high meadow.
    The only reason there are trout in the Kern River and it's tributaries is steelhead used to travel to and from the sea and spawn in the high tributaries. Then a volcano cut the steelhead off from the sea and they evolved into the Golden Trout species.
    I'm thinking the species evolved in volcano/volcanic creek - upstream from where lava cut the creek off from the sea. Then maybe the South Fork strain was the result of transplant by cowboys or who knows, maybe native peoples.

    15 fish solo over 2 days averaging 2-4in maxed at a nice 7-8in at headwaters right before the dry up as of 10/21/21 low flow in SKF and everywhere prefreeze.

    Great video. I re-did much of my heritage challenge fish much like you did - backpacking through the GTW being part of it, for the goldens and KRR (Trout creek, Volcano creek, upper kern river). Volcano Meadow felt like being on the moon. Did you do Eagle lake? Man that was the most difficult by far. I plan to revisit GTW again (Horseshoe to the Kern River Valley)

      Thank you! I wanted to go to Eagle Lake and some of the tributaries of the McCloud River last year but was unable to access them due to the forest fires. I'm looking forward to going as soon as I can. Congratulations on your Heritage Trout, and good luck on your next GTW trip!

    Is there water in this creek year round? Seems like it would dry out by summer end and freeze solid in winter. If so, how do the fish survive the dry/frozen season? What months is this actually fishable? Loved the video! Going to watch your other videos next.

    • @GoFishingOften
      @GoFishingOften  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It mostly depends on how much snowpack we get during the winter months. If we have too many consecutive "dry" years, conditions can get though on the trout.
      Moving water takes longer to freeze than still water. This is because streams freeze along the sides and bottom first, and snow acts as a layer of insulation during the coldest months.
      Thank you!

    So mulkey counts for the heritage and the mulkey goldens are native ?

    • @GoFishingOften
      @GoFishingOften  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mulkey Creek is a tributary to The South Fork of the Kern so goldens caught in Mulkey creek are native and qualify for the Heritage Trout Challenge.

    The most over used adjective in the English language, without a doubt, has to be the word awesome. Awesome this, awesome that. Everything is now awesome. Its frequency of use has completely diminished its original meaning down to a synonym of the words neat or cool. Wow, that's really neat, huh? Yeah, cool! We speak English. But just barely.
