  • Heritage Trout Mapping Episode: 2, Part: 2
In part 2, I complete this trip into the Golden Trout Wilderness, searching for the "Real" Golden Trout of Volcano Creek. This episode starts in Tunnel Meadows on the South Fork of the Kern and then follows along Golden Trout Creek priorly known as (Volcano Creek) and not to be confused with (Volcanic Creek), to Big Whitney Meadow and concludes on top of Cottonwood Pass. Big thanks to Mike and Devon for accompanying me on this trip! This catch qualifies for the California Heritage Trout Challenge.

I second what DK said! You have to go back to volcanic creek! Make sure you have polarized glasses. Volcano meadow! Beautiful trout. Great video!

Dude u have to go back and make it to volcanic creek. You were only 4 miles away. Purest of the pure. No spots. My buddy caught a trophy 12 inches from the headwaters of right stinger volcanic creek. Cool video

Congratulations to your buddy. I agree. Hopefully, I am going back next year, and I want to add an extra day to the trip, so I am not so rushed. I will definitely post if I get into Right Stringer/ Volcanic Creek. Thanks, man!

Awesome video, been thinking of a similar trip for this season myself. I chase Goldens all up and down the Sierra but have yet to fish for them in their native waters.

GFO, thanks for another great video. How many other folks did you run into up there on this trip? Also, have you been to Templeton Meadows? Any interest in fishing the SF or Mulkey in Templeton?

The only area I ran into people was on the cottonwood pass section. Other than that very low traffic on the trail. I have not been to Templeton Meadows, but I am in the planning phase for next year, and it's on the list.
Thanks for checking out the video!

Trying to plan this trip as well. Looks killer. Start Cottonwood Pass trailhead. Head southwest down Trail Pass trail to Tunnel Meadow and camp, fishing along the way at Mulkey and Bullfrog meadow. Maybe shoot down to Volcano Meadow and try and fish right stinger. Head north up to Whitney meadow and camp again, fishing along the way. Then head east all the way back out. 3 nights? Seems like a beast of a trip and probably life changing. Where did you guys camp?

@@GoFishingOften Excellent. Thank you! I've been trying to map out all the spots for the challenge. Tried to fish Swamp Creek for the McCloud River Redband last year but there wasn't any water! Fingers crossed for this year.

We camped just past the Tunnel Meadow Guard Station. There is lots of level ground and easy access to Golden Trout Creek and the South Fork of the Kern. My only regret is not making it to Volcano Meadow, so I would explore that area if you can. Definitely a beast of a trip! And could be life-changing. I know I reflect on this trip quite a lot and can't wait to return.

Great video. How tired were you that last day out and the next day? Did you train? Did you use hoppers all the time or just on mulkey creek? Bugs? Didnt look like you had any biting bug issue? What is best time to go? First 2 weeks in august?? What were the dates of the trip? How cold was it that morning? Great pictures. Well done!! Thankyou. Oh.... was there Any thing that you needed that you forgot to bring? Thanks again.

Very tired, this trip compressed a lot of hiking, fishing, and filming into two days. In hindsight, it would have been better to add an extra day in Tunnel Meadow. The extra day would have given me time to explore volcanic creek and rest before the long trek out. I did not train specifically for this trip, but it would be a good idea. It is roughly the same distance as Mt. Whitney minus the extreme altitude gain. The highest point is Cottonwood Pass at around 12,000'
