The craving affects took over because of the constantly thoughts of what ever that was making him hurt, rather the loss of the Teenagers or some other type of trauma, then addiction sat in, you can bet your bottom dollar on that.
Unfortunately, this was how the music business operated. If they discovered your "soft spot", be it narcotics, alcohol, or women. Then why would they give you royalties? Even Dick Clark had artist sign over royalties to showcase them on his show, in some cases.
