  • First rock tumbler I ever bought and I go over some details of the price, the warranty, the store, noise, function and more. Linked below in this box are the other videos of the stages ( 4 stages) of tumbling and details in each one through the process. I hope it gives you a good idea of the machine and if its worth the purchase for you. It took me 17 and a half days to tumble them to finish and I feel they came out great. The process was suppose to take 28-32 days, so I cut it in half and I feel it was a mix of the rocks, the type of grit I used and how I placed them in the barrels. Leave any questions or advice in the comments please. Enjoy, love Chris

I cut a 1/4 inch piece of foam pipe insulation and stuck it on the top of the inside wall to keep the knob from rubbing on the motor cover. It catches the barrel on the washer, and never lets it get over too far. These are good machines.

I watched your video on my bog screen. Now I have watched online with my computer.. And most of the info was pretty good, but the main problem I have is that the speed is much too fast. Rocks need the rubbing together to really get the rough edges off.. I have the two barrell 3 lb HF tumbler. Speed of the tumbler is the only trouble I have found. I oil my machine regularly and I use very good quality grit. I also run the rocks until they have reached the stage needed. But the speed of the tumbling is the main problem.
Thanks for your research and the changes you made, but I wish you had found how to slow down the speed.

Level off the drive rollers/ rods and replace the tabs with a shower door roller and angle

Mine did a good job but I highly recommend buying the extended warranty. Mine lasted 12-13 months, I can’t find my information on purchase. Ext warranty now is $19 for 2 yrs.

Everything worked fine up until today. The motor just seized up.

Used two of these machines and managed about 8-12 months out of them with continuous use.

Did you have the two year extended warranty? I do not, but mine are running good still, no issues and run them almost daily for a year or more.

Ok, probably a stupid question, but can I put 3lbs in each barrel or is it just 3 lbs total? Yes in my blonde is starting to show, also how much long should I run it for each grit and how much water should I put in it? Is it obvious this is my first tumbler?

3 lb in each Barrel of course that's with the water! And I've noticed the motor is kind of get warm so I put a fan right next to him and they keep cool as a cucumber. I have two Chicago rock tumblers... I might be addicted?

Hey Robert. I actually bought a second one since I liked it and I have lots of rocks to tumble and I got 15% off. I was able to get the sound of the first one to almost no sound at all, but the second one is very loud in a machine type way. The belts, motor and whole machine is good so far, no issues. I still leave the top metal off the motor for keeping the heat down and you just have to clean off the area a bit when it may build up with dust or the plastic grinding from the little piece at 6:40 in the video.
That being said, that piece wore down fast after making angles with it as it went along, then I had to flip it and then I had to replace it with the one on the other side. Both machines are on my kitchen counter and they both have the barrels going to the one side only, so that saves the other plastic piece to use when the other grinds down. It seems to naturally gravitate towards the motor side and might be designed like that. Not sure if you can buy replacement pieces when they both grind down, but should be easy to find a plastic pvc or something at a hardware store and shape fit.
A few other notes that could help you. I cut down on the amount of grit and polish the book said, as it was way too much and that will save you time and money. I also started using a handful of small aquarium gravel in my loads to assist the process and I find it works awesome to cut down the time and they come out a bit smoother. The tops or the seals of the barrels are kind of flimsy and start to bend and warp and are like some thin tin material. So you have to be careful with them. Overall I would say for the price and how well they work, its a good buy. I bought one for I think $52 plus tax and the other was maybe around $60 plus tax. I even do larger rocks in them at about 2-4 inches when they say only up to 1.5 inches and they come out great still. Get the extended warrenty if you buy from the store, I didnt because I bought online and they dont do online warranties; though you could go to the store within 30 days and show your receipt for one. It will cost around $5-10 for 2 years more. If you go to my "Garden, Nature and Crystal Finds" playlist, you will see some more videos of tumbling. Once or twice a month to oil the rods the barrels sit on and once a week to oil the top of the barrels that hit the edge of the black plastic stopper piece that wears out; as it keeps the sound low and slows the grind down. Hope that helps you make a decision easier. If I recall, the lortone was around $100-150 right? So this may be a good buy for your grandson. Thanks for viewing, Chris
Here is my chart I use now from the chart that came with my tumbling grit and the link below to that grit.
coarse grind: 2.5 tablespoons (it said 3)
fine grit: 2.5 (it said 3)
pre polish: 1.5 like it said
      polish: 1.5 like it said
The Chicago chart was: Huge difference and waste of grit and hard to clean off.
      4 tbsp

      6

@@ChristopherSchiffermiller thanks for the information. I saw one video (forget who now) where he used a flat piece of plastic (cut from a jug of some kind) inserted vertically to keep the lid off of the frame after the little tab wore down. I guess I'll get one of the Harbor freight tumblers based on your experience. Thanks again.

Hey Robert, I just got an email from Harbor Freight right now for 25% off one single item with no exclusions. I have no need for it and it is good til Feb 2nd. If you want it to use I can forward it to you via email. Just let me know and leave your email for me to send it to you. In store only, so if your really looking for your Grandson, then this would be good. Link below to their site with the tumbler at $70 right now and 25% would be $17.50. SO you would pay $52 plus tax and or shipping.

I saw that the warranty is only 90 days. Made me decide not to get it. Even the nat geo one has a 2 year warranty.

Hi, thanks for viewing and I agree, most of their items from Harbor Freight are only 90 day warranties. You can get extended 1-2 years for extra money, I think they do it via a percentage of the item. IT would have been maybe $7-8 dollars for each year. They might do it purposely for making money. The tumblers have been great and I have one on now doing some beautiful striped Obsidian.
