My grandmother went to CCM. She was an amazing musician. She could sit down and play the piano by ear and sing--it was awesome. She would be so proud to see that it has and will continue to produce amazing graduates!
I am officially obsessed with this girl! These clips seriously never get tiresome for me. If I ever need to laugh or remind myself what amazing musical theatre belting sounds like, I find nobody better than Marla. If she doesn't get to originate some roles on Broadway here pretty soon, something is seriously wrong with the business. I will definitely go see Drowsy simply to see her! BAH!!! GO MARLA!!
your voice is the most amazing thing i've heard in SO long. your other videos are HILARIOUS. You inspire me as a Musical Theatre major. SERIOUSLY! any time i need inspiration, I listen to YOU. THANK YOU. I can't even COUNT the times I show your videos to friends, haha. mostly when drunk, but who's counting ;)
"Sooner or Later" is a song Sondheim wrote for the Dick Tracy film. It was originally sung by Madonna, but has been performed by many a musical theatre performer. "The Man That Got Away" is from the Judy Garland film "A Star is Born."
ugh I love you! I can't wait to see you in 'Drowsy' when it comes to Providence, RI! I already have my tickets!!!! :D I only wish classes would still be going on at that time so you could come give us a master class! ps - I'm so obsessed with this video! I watch it every single day!!!!
Brovo love it nice sound good singers this makes me think of somone that is at my school they sound just a like not in a bad way but in a good way SWEET I LOVED IT NICE VOICE SELCTIONS !!!!!
Very cool. It reminds me of the famous duet that Judy Garland and Babara Streisand did between Happy Days and Get Happy. These two songs go together because when Sondheim was writing Sooner or Later he was most likely writing a pastiche/homage to Harold Arlen. I would stage it slightly differently. They should relate with each other. They could switch places when each takes the lead and look at each other on the long notes.
you have one of the most amazing voices i've EVER heard! i hope by the time i reach my senior year in college, my voice will be as developed and powerful as yours :] eek, does anyone know where I can get sheet music for this?
Just wondering. Has Marla gotten the sheet music for this yet, and if so, how can I get this arrangement without listening to it and copying it down myself?
so casual and sassy, i thought your acting was very strong in context with the sooner or later arrangement. together you told the story of the kind of woman to whom lovers come and go but the emotional thru lines of each song was kinda reversed with the choice of singer...you wonder if the woman singing sooner or later is past her prime and still holds the same kind of power over men, and you're thinking with the man that got away it was maybe a keen sting to the character but a fling nonetheless, and as a person just coming into your prime there will likely be more where that came from. gives you something to chew on as you listen to some tasty vocals without being too fraught or overbaked. and both of your outfits were actually perfect i thought, like just an all around delightful performance, thanks for posting.

well, she's beyond insanely talented. In my opinion, she's well beyond. And girls right out of UMich who are going straight to broadway aren't half as impressive as Marla Mindelle.
yes, but still congrats for her for being cast with in such a small amount of time after leaving school. and no one acknowledged it. i thought it would be nice too
UGH Don't you hate it when actors make CHOICES??? Who do they think they are??? REALLY. YOU MUST DO SOMETHING AS THE ORIGINAL DID. NO VARIATION. Ever. No acting allowed.
does anyone wonder how many people have actually watched this? all i mean is i'm responsible for at least 20 hits. i wonder if there are only like 50 of us out there. reDONKulous.
Histrionic without purpose. Ill fitting costumes. A black slip for a performance? Incredibly tortured faces while singing. Yes, they are both talented, but goodness, some subtlety would do wonders.
...don't get me wrong she has a good voice but she has a thing or two to learn about telling the story of the song cause she obviously knows nothing about acting. Besides the songs seem to work more for the differences in ages. The younger girl could have done all the "showing off, or Hot Dogging" she wanted to singing "Sooner or Later ( i always get my man)
this was ALL wrong --- the woman singing "Sooner or Later" should have sung "The Man that Got Away" the younger woman should have sung "Sooner or Later" reason being she was smiling and "hot dogging" a sad painful song ( it was almost laughable)
Iconic forever and eveeeer

That was pretty damn awesome
OMG, perfect
anyway I can get my hands on this arrangement??? LOVE IT!!
Did you ever get a hold of it?

So many people asking for sheet music--did anyone ever get their hands on it/transcribe it?
where would i get a copy of this variation of music?
dear marla, why are you so amazing
she's excellent. Broadway watch out!
i second that!
you have one of the most amazing voices i've EVER heard!
i hope by the time i reach my senior year in college, my voice will be as developed and powerful as yours :]
eek, does anyone know where I can get sheet music for this?
marla mindelle youre a fucking genius. Youre the feircest mt singer ever. And that is coming from an opera singer. You work it.
that sounds good! i think i will apply on a musical school in frankfurt/germany. but i have time^^, i'm still going to school ;)
Fierce, fierce, fierce.
City of Angels? What is this from?
that was simply phenominal
the first singer is incredible.
fabulous!
do you know where i can get the sheet music for this??
Did you ever figure it out?
whereeeee can i get this arrangement?!
you're so good
THAT GIRL IN THE BLACK IS AMAZING!
You're right, while you are on the internet hating her.. She is ACTING on BROADWAY. HATERS BE HATING.
i hope you came to your senses and applied to u of michigan too.
Congrats to Marla for being cast in Cole Porter's new musical The Pirate!
Just wondering. Has Marla gotten the sheet music for this yet, and if so, how can I get this arrangement without listening to it and copying it down myself?
Did you end up transcribing it?
@hhalfred she is AWESOME!
AGREED

Where's the emotion?? Which one are you talking about...Marla or Pat? I would never question either of them...
damn.
that's a high belt if i've ever heard one.
next stop bway for SURE
whoa, the voice teacher taught her well.
"Sooner or Later" is the oscar winning song Stephen Sondheim wrote for Disney's DICK TRACY and was sung by Madonna in the film. "The Man That Got Away" was written by Harold Arlen for Judy Garland in the film "A Star is Born".

You remind me of Mary Louise Parker. You look like her and your mannerisms are very reminiscent of hers.
You have an incredible voice.
why don't you go?
well, she's beyond insanely talented. In my opinion, she's well beyond. And girls right out of UMich who are going straight to broadway aren't half as impressive as Marla Mindelle.
that shit is rockin my lip gloss is poppin
HOLY FU*K! =O!
The flip into head at 2:17. COME ONNNN
I'm not debating that, but the style in which she's singing is not jazz, it's musical theatre.
her belt kind of sounds like sutton foster's. thats a compliment :)
oh my god, i thought i was the only one.
yes, but still congrats for her for being cast with in such a small amount of time after leaving school. and no one acknowledged it. i thought it would be nice too
fucking fierce. thats all.
it's more of a mix, but yeah, she sounds great
God would i love to train with you :( You're far too enchanting for your own good.
*raises hand*
this is ridiculous. My vocal cords worship you, Marla.
UGH Don't you hate it when actors make CHOICES??? Who do they think they are??? REALLY. YOU MUST DO SOMETHING AS THE ORIGINAL DID. NO VARIATION. Ever. No acting allowed.

reDONKulous.
this is ridiculous... i cant stop watching
that's actually a very good comparison. hahaha
A mix between Bernedette Peters and.... someone else.
And the voice teacher is no slouch either.
it's broadway, baby, not jazz.
@mcfit707 haha
@jonnydarko this comment is perhaps, the creepiest thing ever. hahah
bernedette peters and lachanze lol
look at 2:25 tell me what you think lol
Subtlety, what do you think this is..? This is a showcase. Not a subtlecase. LMFAO
Amazing voice, but I wish there was more passion behind her face.
stage acting rarely translates to film well.
Kind of laughable that you can tear apart an arrangement made for this showcase. LMFAO
Histrionic without purpose. Ill fitting costumes. A black slip for a performance? Incredibly tortured faces while singing. Yes, they are both talented, but goodness, some subtlety would do wonders.
I love Marla but the first singer is just awful.
...don't get me wrong she has a good voice but she has a thing or two to learn about telling the story of the song cause she obviously knows nothing about acting.
