See her having powers unto itself is fine, I guess, but more often than not all "give supporting characters super powers for a bit" has only ever been a gimmick and rarely do they do anything all that interesting with it. She's the epitome of what Marvel has been doing to many characters. Power swaps, power trades, power losses, everyone is worthy, everyone has a healing factor, there are 1 a million Spider-Men, Ghost Riders, Thors, Phoenixes.
I'm cool with MJ having a slot machine based super power that gives her a random ability so she's not defenseless during a Spidey event and has to rely on whatever the writer pulls out of the bag to give her a purpose. But I don't want MJ to have a costume or hero name. She's so important to the Spider-man mythos I don't think she can count as a supporting character so much as secondary protagonist but Marvel seems to keep trying to push her out in favor of "Forever alone Arch-I mean, Spider-man!"
I hope it's a limited thing like you said sometimes see and supporting characters get powers it's just unnecessary they're supporting characters for a reason let them stay at supporting characters and she's wanting the characters that's proven that she doesn't need powers to be an important character in the comic book universe
Normally I'd agree with you and everyone else saying that they hope she doesn't keep the powers, but at this point, I'm not so sure. I'm just wondering 'what else are they going to do with her at this point?' Marvel seems dead set on not restoring the marriage and keeping them apart, but there's also not actually a good reason for them to be apart. It feels like if they're going to keep pushing the two apart the way they have, then she's left kind of purposeless from a story perspective. She's a vibrant character with a lot going for her in her own right, but that only makes her presence in Spider-man books look worse in my opinion, since how much more can she grow in Peter's shadow this way? What's her place in Spider-man's stories now, when their separation is fundamentally artificial and something that has to be constantly maintained and reinforced on a meta level rather than a story level? In light of that, this at least gives her somewhere new to go and something to do.
I’m not into it. I usually only like supporting characters getting powers in one-offs or else worlds type stories (the insect queen Lana Lang herself being a brilliant exception that should be brought into the modern day). And going with luck based? I mean, it helps that it’s for teaming up with Black Cat rather than awkwardly ignoring that her powers are luck based too… but I’m still sceptical. However, a good writer could turn almost anything interesting, so who knows.
If I'm being honest I hope she does if they refuse to have her be with Peter Parker and they want a distance her from being with Spider-Man and they have no intention of bringing those two together really do something with a character
If handle right this could be very interesting and away to allow her to grow as her own character outside of Spider-Man but if handle wrong would just be a goof.
Whether she keeps the powers or not (Which I'm fine with, they're fun and I'd love a bit of time with them before we go back), I would love for her to decide not to be a superhero. MJ is one of my favorite supporting characters of all time, and part of what makes her interesting was always how much she loved her career. Many adaptions change her career because acting/modeling isn't feminist or active enough, but I've always felt her independence was what made her empowering, and that tied to her job. And it'd be interesting to see someone choose to be a civilian
It's math, as the association of a character and super heroes approaches all the time, the chances the character will remain normal approach zero. Heck, just gaining the associated hero's powers is on an even higher probability scale... Honestly, giving a new/different set of powers is at least creative and might even result in a positive change for the whole IP. I seldom like the "got hero X's powers through a mishap" bit so something different is always appreciated.
There was a hero in the comics called Jackpot, she was also thought to be Mary Jane when Jackpot teamed up with Spider-Man due to their flirty behavior towards each other but was revealed to be someone else entirely
I actually really enjoyed the MJ limited, where she made a Hollywood movie with Mysterio - but apparently I'm the only one. Giving supporting characters some time in the spotlight can be really fun so long as you have an idea, the powers are rarely the important bit. When I saw this news it seemed a bit silly, but so long as they can do something interesting (perhaps luck based powers interacting with Black Cat's bad luck aura thing?) I'm down.
It sounds like a bit of an OP power that can write them out of any situation but the thematics of it, especially if ahe takes on the name Jackpot, is perfect.
Not up my ally. Spider-Man comics should be about a superhero trying to maintain a normal life. That requires normal people. And Mary Jane is one of the best non-powered 'normal people' in the Marvel Universe.
I prefer her to be anything other than a damsel in distress. So this is fine, as long as they make her a character even after she'd probably lose them.
I’d be all in on MJ’s Power’s if they proved to be a threat that Mephisto felt it would be better for Him if She didn’t retain them…Making Him negotiate a deal for MJ to relinquish the Power in exchange for Her & Peter’s old lives back ( sans Aunt May being at Death’s door) 🖖🏾
I hope MaryJane keeps her powers and really does take the name Jackpot! She can even be a Avenger or better yet a Defender. Put her a squad with Luke Cage, Iron fist, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil. You can even fill out the roster with MJ, Spider-Man and Black Cat.
Honestly my first thought was to Kamen Rider Geats with the Fever power-up, which is literally a slot machine to give a randomized form or weapon, but Ladybug works too. XD
Honestly the concept sounds really fun. Lots of interesting and funny situation you could get her into. Especially if you pair her or have her go against people with luck based manipulation powers.

The single most unoriginal power set and name ever. Remember "Jackpot"? The redheaded superhero who looked EXACTLY like MJ but totally wasn't? The one who debuted inside the pages of Spiderman and whose powers had NOTHING to do with luck?! No? Well...
It will be short lived, and I would point to her getting spider-powers a few years ago in the Spider-Island story arc as an example. My opinion, I know. But, ...
i think it's great that mj is doing something else than her usual schtic it freshens up the character and expands on what she is capable of, I hoe that she keeps the bracelet and becomes a hero as some really needs to change and more away from the status quo.
A character named Jackpot was introduced shortly after "One More Day", if I'm not mistaken, and I thought she WAS MJ because of her famous quote from back in the day. I was all for it until I found out that Jackpot was someone else.
A common theory is that the similarity was deliberate. Back then people were still really pissed about One More Day (hell, we're still pissed) and so Marvel would try to occasionally tease Mary Jane's return and the possibility of her and Peter getting back together again to get people reading the book again, and naturally pulling the rug out from under us half the time, with Jackpot being one of the examples. We were supposed to think she was Mary Jane with powers.
Mary Jane having powers goes against the whole concept of her character. Having random powers seems more something out of the silver age. How do we get them out of this one? Oh just give her X power. The fact she can also do luck is making Black Cat obsolete as well.
The spider family MJ is more up my alley. Didn't even know that MJ had powers in dark web. I've just been ignoring this comic and whatever MJ has been doing for a while now.
I don’t mind it, it seems rather interesting that Mary Jane has been given the opportunity to have a broader extent to her character… Thank you for listening & Always Have a Magnificent Lifetime for All Eternity Forevermore. - K.C./The Professor
Honestly, I like the idea of her getting powers, but this seems random. I kind of liked how I the ultimate cartoon she got the carnage symbiote. That was interesting, this feels odd and disconnected.
I honestly don't mind if these powers stick around. Seeing as how they're bound to the bracelet and random it gives interesting story potential. Can't wait for the writers to do absolutely nothing with it and forget about it after a year.
MJ getting powers is great but not becoming a spandex superhero. She has so much charisma and street smarts that her becoming a cape would make her broken.
No charecter directly connected to Peter Parker can or should have powers and not use them as a Super Hero. Great Power Great Responsibility and all that Jazz.
@@kagenoo1084 You can disagree all you want. And There can be people with powers that don't use them for super heroics. But when that person is directly connected to Peter Parker it undermines His central theme and therefore shouldn't be written as such.
@@weathermangohanssj4 I don't think it undermines her theme. Im not saying ignore suffering I'm saying that not everyone in peters life has to go out and look for trouble to stop. Not everyone has to share his since of responsibility. It could even be a good story for Peter to expect that responsibility means different things to different people.
@@weathermangohanssj4 that's peters thing. Can't really make Peter not come off as anything but a jackass if he thinks a person should be a hero just because they have powers and if they don't he thinks less of them.
Honestly having side characters gain powers and do their own thing is a preferable way to add more diversity to the comics industry without clumsily replacing existing characters. Someone you've past knowledge and experience with becoming a super is way easier to swallow than "Okay Tony's in a coma, here's this Mary Sue almost out of nowhere. She's Iron Man now."
I hope it lists long enough for her to get a proper costume and for her to take the hero name "Jackpot". It'd be a fun thing to call back to and maybe it's something Mary Jane can keep in her back pocket when the need arises.
I feel like MJ deserves to keep her powers at this point. She's such a well established character that I kinda feel like keeping her as solely a supporting character in Peter's life is a gross under use of her character as a whole. MJ is an interesting character she has a very well established personality that people like for a reason. As a huge Spiderman fan I would love nothing more then to see her character be expanded more. The whole concept of how these powers work is also quite interesting the whole jackpot imagery is perfect. Also that would make a great hero name I can see it now issue #1 JACKPOT! 💰🕸🕷
Random luck powers are such a cop out when abused. They can just write themselves into a corner then say she hit the jackpot that does whatever the plot needs and also removes the powers permanently because...why not? Perfect deus ex machina and restore status quo at the same time.
Personally I don’t care if kk gets powers as long as they are unique and not a copy of the original/more popular character. Luck based powers are an interesting idea XD I’d love to see what’s in store
So many panels were directly ripped from Pepe Larraz’s previous Black Cat run 😮 and inferno and Amazing Spider-Man. It felt like they were given notes about the art being a little too kinetic and they responded by tracing over the work the editor likely referenced in the notes. Over the years I have noticed that spiteful stuff like this happens in event tie-ins often.
Mutant powers based on complete chance actually sounds pretty damn cool. She’s like that mutant that can evolve instantly to survive any situation but better(?)
I'm convinced this is a temporary thing just for this limited series, but I do think it's a bad trend to give powers to civilian cast members. Part of what humanizes a hero--especially Peter--is the connection to ordinary folks. When a hero only hangs out with other supers it's less interesting.
I'm in all the way on this. Now can we set up the obvious story arc where peter loses his powers right after they get back together and it causes issues when she goes out fighting crime and leaving him home alone? It has to happen, it is as inevitable as Thanos.
If they still refuse to bring her back as being the wife or the love interest of Spider-Man then at that point make sure you use her for something else
So she's has luck powers and is known for the word "jackpot", but has nothing to do with Jackpot, who looks like her and doesn't have luck powers😂

The spider family MJ is more up my alley. Didn't even know that MJ had powers in dark web. I've just been ignoring this comic and whatever MJ has been doing for a while now.
Didn’t they already toy with this idea in Brand New Day, with the totally-not-Mary-Jane-oh-wait-nevermind-she-really-isn’t-MJ character Jackpot?
I've seen some theorize that this hasn't even been Mary Jane since the start of the run but actually Jackpot with amnesia and maybe in MJ's body.
If they don't give her the superhero name Jackpot and have her attacked by a villian with some sort of tiger motif the why are we even here?
MJ having powers is long overdue... She should have been Jackpot the whole, sadly Marvel chickened out...
Keep 'dem powers, MJ!
I don’t mind it, it seems rather interesting that Mary Jane has been given the opportunity to have a broader extent to her character…
Thank you for listening & Always Have a Magnificent Lifetime for All Eternity Forevermore.

Honestly, I like the idea of her getting powers, but this seems random. I kind of liked how I the ultimate cartoon she got the carnage symbiote. That was interesting, this feels odd and disconnected.
Omg if she DOES end up with this being a permanent thing, her hero name should absolutely be Jackpot
Except there are already two heroines with that name
I want Peter and MJ back together
Honestly, comic book writers are just getting lazing
I honestly don't mind if these powers stick around. Seeing as how they're bound to the bracelet and random it gives interesting story potential. Can't wait for the writers to do absolutely nothing with it and forget about it after a year.
I think they should be temporary. Not every side character needs powers or a suit
As a DC guy this sounds like a bad idea.
Did they just make MJ Ben10?
Dial M for Mary Jane? Or was some writer simply smoking too much Mary Jane?
MJ getting powers is great but not becoming a spandex superhero. She has so much charisma and street smarts that her becoming a cape would make her broken.
No charecter directly connected to Peter Parker can or should have powers and not use them as a Super Hero. Great Power Great Responsibility and all that Jazz.
@@weathermangohanssj4 I disagree. You can be responsible and not be an illegal vigilante
A character in HunterXHunter had a similar power; when activated he got 1 of 7 weapons chosen at random.
Kinda makes me think of Dial H for Hero. Basically someone getting a power at random and trying to use it for whatever situation they're dealing with.
This sounds like a up to date Lana Lang getting powers and I don't hate it lol
Lana Lang insect queen!!
I was thinking these powers are reminiscent of Jimmy Olsen's variety of random power ups he would get during the silver age.
Cant wait until she makes a deal with mephisto to be just a "normal girl" after her powers lead to some kind of tragedy out of her control
Didn't we do this already?
Okay.. but isn’t luck manipulation a power that black cat has had in some iterations
Didn't they already have a Jackpot character that looked like (or was) MJ in the aftermath of One More Day?
I'm in all the way on this. Now can we set up the obvious story arc where peter loses his powers right after they get back together and it causes issues when she goes out fighting crime and leaving him home alone? It has to happen, it is as inevitable as Thanos.
Did Mary Jane just become silver age Jimmy Olsen?
Forget Tiger. MJ just hit the jackpot. And again. And again. And again. Hey! Does she have luck powers? No one wins at the slots this often! 🤣
If they still refuse to bring her back as being the wife or the love interest of Spider-Man then at that point make sure you use her for something else
