This song really resonates with me.
When I was released from the mental hospital, I was experiencing derealization for days-- weeks even.
I experience derealization often in general, but given the mental hospital theme of this too, I resonate with that especially.

😭i've been listening to this song nonstop since i found it and i want to blab about it because i love this song and YOU CANT DO ANYTHINGNABOUT IT
the main theme of this song is derealization, which more in depth in the context of this song is the departure of something sentimental and then coming back to it with a new mindset. the realisation that nothing else has changed and only you have,
throughout the song there are pixelated pictures in the background, which backs up my previous claim. The images are things such as slides, a hospital hallway (???? or just a hallway in general) and classrooms. these are something that many of us have seen in our lives, but instead of them being in normal HD quality they are pixelated, to represent that while they ARE still the same, they are entirely different. What i mean further by this, using an example, is that you can have friends but distance, and when you reunite they can be an entirely new person with a different personality BUT they are still the same friend you once had. still different but yet the same (i'm sorry i'm not good at explaining my thought process😭) i'd also like to note that the character isn't really doing anything in those scenes. rather just standing there and not interacting with the background. i originally noticed this in the slide scene. slides are something that toddlers or small children play around with, but the character has the body of a young adult, which reconnects the feeling of outgrowing a place but not wanting to let it go yet
anyway, the feeling of returning to a place but not fitting into it the same is backed up by the character in the video being seen as an alien. from a different place entirely, the place they are visiting no longer suits them, which the theme of that is backed up by the character not being in the same pixelisation size as the background (idk if i said thst right) but what i mean is, the background is still pixalised- to represent KNOWING it, but not recognising it completely, but the character is not if the same pixelisation as the background. don't get me wrong, the character is STILL pixelated but at a smaller size, this further cements the belief that the character doesn't even know themself fully either(???)
another thing i like about both the character and background being pixelated is that they are BOTH pixelated, which shows they have a common theme or trait- sharing the same origins almost. which makes sense since the character KNOWS the place where they are, but they've changed
anyway, now diving into the song (NOT LYRICS) but rather the melody. the same tune is repeated over and over, while developing throughout the entire song. i feel like that demonstrates that the character is slowly learning more, or developing their thoughts more coherently. OR it can represent how the character is remembering something. it can also represent the character revisiting the places but still not feeling anything??? this is kind of a useless thing to bring up but i've noticed the melody the most in this song and it's one of the things i've really enjoyed about it, i like how low the pitch(? idk if that's what it's called) is and how itching it is in a way? almost like that feeling you get when your about to remember something- or even trying to say a word you forgot the name of, but you just don't know what you need to remember or what your trying to say. i think that feeling might have been unintentional, but even so as a viewer i recognised it and it complimented the song a lot.

to start off, the songs name is extraterrestrial. the title in itself reveals what the song is about, the google definition of extraterrestrial is "or or from outside the earth or its atmosphere". this backs up what i stated previously (or it didn't and i didn't say what i meant right) but it touches on the fact that the character is out of touch with its reality, something it once called home but now it's alienated by it.

to start off with, the song begins with "age old visions" which is a reference to that nostalgic feeling this song illustrates, remembering something from a long time ago, even though the memory is old you still see glimpses of it or even flashbacks from it. i'd also like to point out the character is either holding their head like "ermmm what the flip was that" or rubbing their eyes like "oh, those memories again". i'd also like to point out their face is rather monotonous, which shows that while they are there in the moment, their conscious presence is simply not there
the second line grant my wishes shows that they are looking to their memories to grant them some kind of relief, which makes sense in the later line "take me back to what i know", which confirms the suspicion is that they are looking back on those memories for comfort and to go back to their previously beloved life.

the first three lines show that the present life has nothing for them, nothing of interest to them, so they can only look to the back to reconcile and to feel whole again, the fourth line "take me back to my old home" is using the adjective old again, which shows that the alien character KNOWS that what they are looking back on is the past, but they still choose to have their mind in the past rather then the present, like a form of escapism- which makes sense since they are asking to be brought back to it.

the first two lines back up what i already said before, the character wants to relive their past, whether it be decades or days ago. the word vicariously is summarised to be living the life of another person through imagination (just a silly little paraphrase i got from the google definition of my understanding of the word). this further develops the theme of the character living in their memories- but not as the same person- as the person they are now.

this has to be one of the most powerful verse in the song, it it indicates that the character is trying to fit into their memories like a puzzle piece. but they simply doesn't fit anymore. however they don't understand this and take growing and evolving as a negative thing, viewing their past self as superior to their current self. holding their past life as a trophy while their current life as something similar to a participation award

this is also one of my favourite verses, "far away" indicates that the memories they are holding onto are long gone, far far away from the present time, but they still hold onto them. i also like the rhyme of "in a way that only i can feel", i first mistook it as "far away and away, that only i feel" but it "in a way" makes more sense to the story, the memories they are holding onto are a memory that no one else can relate to, only they can relates to the need to harness that life once again. it also singles out the character for the only one who wants to relive their life, while everyone else has moved on. in addition to this the scenes they are in are seen as things that you wouldn't really miss. who would miss being in a hallway? no one would miss that. apart from them, which proves that the character truly misses their life to even fantasies about walking or even standing in those hallways again. "looking back on a day when all of this was real" i also originally mistook this line as "where all of this real" but the specific focus is WHEN in this verse, which adds to the theme of time, past tense. the character is defining 'real' as living in the moment i think? like using the world real as you would in saying that this is your reality. it's trippy and i love it so much

this verse adds a whole different meaning to what i've stated so far (im annotating whil in real time about how i feel about the lyrics, keeping my original thoughts present but explaining them as best i can). anyway, "trapped forever" shows that the character might not even want to have their mind drift to their memories, their past. but they still subconsciously do it even though they don't want to. leaving them trapped in a cycle they don't want to be in. i also like in addition to the this the line that follows is "in this place", leaving what i said previously to be valid, but their mind is still wandering to a SPECIFIC memory or time. "with my fate dreary and sealed" (i don't really understand this but i'll try to comprehend this???) this quote shows that they KNOW they can't escape their reality, sticking with the theme of hopelessness and being stuck in a predetermined fate of repetition and reliving the past, the character feeling no possibility of escape. no matter how hard they try

this verse is basically just repetition, the character questioning themselves and becoming out of touch with their existence, this ties in with the song. Extraterrestrial, they are in the past, a reality that their new reinvented self is no longer welcome in, even though their mindset might not have changed, the world around them has and moved on. them now being stuck with nowhere to go, the world leaving them behind to leave them ponder the question that they are real
edit: i'd also like to add on the repetition of the line could be them not only asking themselves, but trying to convince themselves i guess??? like how you're having a panic attack and you're telling yourself you're fine when your breaking down. your telling yourself lies because if those lies aren't true you'd have to face the truth. and sometimes the truth can be bad. i'm not sure if this is the the vibe you were going for but i was thinking more about it and it made sense, but i guess i am squinting the lines a bit
during the instrumental break lines like "you need to remember", "this place isn't real anymore", "it doesn't matter how many times you relive it", "you'll never get this life back"
these lines appeared on the screen, the character never saying them. this could be their thought process- of which they refuse to believe, or simply their future self trying to give their past self the advice they wish they had at the time, trying to reach the person they once were- but unable to reach. i'm not sure what to make of this but i do like the idea that it is the character in the future trying to reach their old self, it really solidifies the idea of how important time IS in this song. waaah i love it so much it's so silly
strangely reminds me of some of those old creepypasta songs from back around 2008 but actually good. I really like this, it also scratches some kind of itch in my brain, although perhaps a different one than you had in mind.

i like how weirdly like,, calming yet surreal it is at the same time?? i recognize that it probably wasn't the goal/point of the song, but i feel like a big problem with media (songs especially) that try to play into the whole uncanny valley/backrooms stuff is that it TRIES TOO HARD to be properly *eerie*, or really leave an impact. because the entire time, the only thing your brain can acknowledge is how "scary" or dark its trying to be.

this song does have a lot to do with nostalgia and derealization! specifically its about my experience being discharged from a mental hospital and trying to return to my old life but feeling "alien" (hence the theme) and like things would never be the same, but i can understand it being interpreted many ways. i really appreciate people theorizing :)
