Adachi knows what he is talking about. It's kind of funny when he is saying you need talent to have a good life, and look who gets mad, the rich talented idol who would not even know what it is like to be average.
Except he isn't, Adachi's misery is of his own making. Rather than live in his own moment and be optimistic, he lives (or rather lived considering he's locked up) a life of complacent complainer. Constantly bitching about how he was "dealt a bad hand" while never trying to make the best of his deck. These mindsets create self fufiled prophecies to those who believe in them, they believe they're stains to society so they become them. Sure Rise is privileged with "fame" in youth, but her entire story shows that it's an empty notoriety. People see her as "Rissette" not her true self, which led to her nearly falling to her own despair before the encounter with the investigation team. Point being, one's fate is within their own perspective. I will say tho, I love Adachi considering he's an amazing portrayal of many people in reality (and has become even more relevant today in the age of people who carry nihilistic mindset online), and it's faults.
Yeah, no. I’ll be the first to admit that life is hell, and you fight an uphill battle every day trying to make the most of your life. But talent is NOT at all what makes you good in life. You can be talentless as hell, but what carries you higher in life is a burning desire to not quit, to fight against the odds, and to be victorious. Adachi hid away from the truth this whole time and mired in his issues rather than taking the initiative to fix them. And regardless, there is absolutely no justification to “killing because it seemed fun”. You’ve got to be one broken asshole to think that’s any sort of justice, just because you’re “stuck eating cabbage uwu”. That’s not deep. That’s just nihilistic cringe. Adachi’s a cool character though. Really glad he learned his lesson in P4AU.
While it is true that Adachi contradicts himself at several times, this is because he is pretty much the perfect example of a man escaping from the truth. Adachi is a brilliant thinker, and without a doubt one of the smartest, if not the smartest character introduced in the whole game. But at the same time, he is selfish, cynical, and prideful. He feels as though a "normal" life is less than he deserves, and blames everyone but himself for his frustration. A truly great villain if you ask me. ;)
I think the word "talent" should have been replaced by "opportunity", since that actually covers what he is trying to say much better. Some people work hard. Some people are talented, yet they are never able put all this to use, due to not having the right connections or opportunities.
No, Talent is code word for genetics. The beautiful/athletic people generally have life handed to them. while the betas like adachi get picked on and shit on working 30k a year jobs.
Just speculating but I'm not sure there's one word that properly translates. I expect the original Japanese to contain a word that roughly has both meanings
Funny how Adachi really explains his view of life and the world and the 'good guys' only argue with 'Thats not right/true!' but dont explain WHY or reason with him and telling him the good sides of life and the world, what he missed out and what he acually got in life. Adachi just needs a hug or two.
@@anthonydeadman Not only that, but Yosuke, Yukiko and Rise were probably the last people to argue against Adachi's points. Yosuke was so bored from being stuck in Inaba that he entered the TV World mainly for a thrill, Yukiko lamented over her inability to have a better life away from her family's Inn, hoping someone would save her from such a fate, and Rise had the talent and became a Pop Idol, living a life that was far from boring. And somehow, none of them thought it was ironic to debate against Adachi's stance on reality?
@@ceecee6521 They probably were just too distracted by their own emotions and the fact that they were being "Heroes" in this investigation to really care about the ironic aspects of their involvement in this. Which is sad, but that's kids for you. Yosuke though was the worst one of them all in my opinion.
Okay my view on this is; simply put Adachi is an amazing character and has a lot of good points. I'm not going to say he is "Right" but I will equally deny that he is "wrong". Many of you may see his points as having flaws or being straight up stupid. But lets think for a second about Adachi and his shadow. Notice anything different from his shadow compared to any other seen in this game before or even after this scene? He doesn't "Turn" into a "True Self" or warp in any physical capacity. In fact we can clearly see that him and his shadow become one and the same, what does this mean? Well it's simple, Adachi in this scene or any other has not once lied to himself or others. What does this mean? Every point he makes, every single thing he says is true to his own beliefs and view. "Stupid Teenagers, you don't know what kind of shit I've been through!" It's probably a perfect way to summerise his entire life and experiences which have led him down this path. We know from the way that Adachi speaks on those with "Talent" that he has honestly tried in life , he tried to get ahead to make something of himself through the system but for all his effort he was never given an ounce or reward, remember how he says he made one tiny mistake and was shipped off to Inaba for it? Well due to the fact that he never once lies to himself we can confirm in truth that it must have been something incredibly minor yet he was given quite a severe punishment for it. I don't really care if you see him as wrong or childish the fact remains that he's lived a full life or work and facing the harsh reality that comes with adulthood compared to the main cast of teenagers who lets face it are still in a rather blissful life of highschool ignorance. He may have killed people under his own believes and done things many see as "wrong" but understand that there was clearly a time where he devoted himself to the "right" path of adulthood and being a member or society, but the world constantly pushed him down for those honest efforts and gave him cruel and unforgiving consequences for just trying to fit in. Perhaps driven by the "power" he's received and the crushing weight of adult reality he has gone somewhat mad and power hungry by his actions , but would anyone else under his personally believed extreme circumstances be any different? To him this "power" is his single reward for the things he's tried to accomplish in life in the midst of nothing but let down, so yes he would naturally exploit this gift to it's full. The world and many others clearly never cared for his efforts and existence over all, so I can only assume in his own mind, why should he care about others?
You summ it up perfectly. It's not about him being "right" or "wrong", it's about what makes sense from his perspective. And denying that such a perspective exists is exactly what he rages about, since that's exactly the carefree mindset that ignores the world around it he despises so much. Adachi truly is a great villain. I kinda hate how he gets his "redemption" in the Arena games. Having a nihilistic character that actually had some layers of depth greatly worked in the games favor.
Johan Laeon Well of course nobody is born evil. That doesn't excuse his actions. I don't care if he was true to himself he is still a shitty person. I am a adult and none of the adults that I know whine like Adachi. Ironically he is more childish than the protagonists despite being older than them. Adachi sounds like a whiny angsty teenager to me. Rather than try to improve himself, he wallows in self pity. Newsflash guys, the world owes us nothing and there are people who have it much worse than Adachi and many of those people don't wallow in self pity.
0816 M3RC You were doing so well until you said “I don’t care if he was true to himself he is still a shitty person.” Allow me to provide you an example of what it must feel like for Adachi. Imagine you and another person have been working at a company for years. You both have started working there around the same time and you do the exact same job. Unlike your coworker, who spends most of the time on their phone or slacking off, you work diligently to provide the very best quality work you could possibly perform with 110% effort. You never take a personal day, even if you’re sick, and usually cover the shifts of other coworkers when they’re gone. You don’t cause trouble, you never cut corners and you do everything the right way. You overhear talks of a promotion and how you are a potential candidate for it, so you make sure to work even harder. But in the end, the coworker that’s constantly slacking off gets the promotion instead. Now take that example and apply it to almost any situation you can think of when you were a kid such as when your brother got a toy and you didn’t or when you raise your hand to answer a question and the teacher calls on you, but some random kid shouts out the answer. Nobody likes failure, I think we can all agree on that. Some people handle it differently than others; agree on that too. But in Adachi’s case, it isn’t some ordinary constant cycle of failure, it’s literally surpassing your limits and working even harder than most people around you and still being unable to get ahead in life. It’s not possessing the talents to succeed so you’re forced to work twice, three, four times as hard to make up for it, but it’s still not enough for people to acknowledge you and reward you with some recognition from the world. No matter what you do, no matter how much you try, you will never be able to have what other people have and make it through life on something you’re good at because the world will always only care about those with talent. In all honesty, Adachi’s beliefs and perspective are practically identical to society in Danganronpa. There are two types of people in the world: those who were born with talent and everyone else. You don’t have a talent? You might as well be a poor person in a world ruled by the rich because you’d be lucky to even be treated the same as trash if you work hard enough. No matter how much a little dog tries, it’ll never become a big dog. No matter how much a penguin flaps its wings, it’ll never soar through the skies. And no matter how hard a person may work for the opportunity of reaching success, if they’re not born with their talent or into a rich family, they’re almost certainly doomed to fail. There is no “instead of improving himself, he chose to do this,” there is no improving because it would never be enough. That’s the reality of our society. “The world owes us nothing.” While that sentiment is true, that’s the honest equivalent of saying a criminal shouldn’t be allowed a defense. The court doesn’t owe anyone a defense, but it allows it so that criminals who have been wrongfully accused can have a chance at proving themselves to be innocent. So why can’t the world give us a chance to prove that we’re actually worth something instead of randomly cutting us down in favor of certain people? Newsflash: Equality of any kind is, by nature, a contradiction as there is NO SUCH THING in the eyes of the universe. Where one person succeeds, another fails. That’s the honest truth. “There are people who have it much worse than Adachi and many of those people don’t wallow in self-pity.” What makes you think what he’s experiencing is self-pity? To me, it seems more like frustration with the world and the way it operates to favor certain people over other. He understands more than anyone that he has put forth every ounce of effort he could muster into his work and the world continues to punish him for it. It’s a proven concept: Good people trying to do the right thing get punished more than the bad people who will do anything to survive. I’ll be honest. It’s pretty annoying when someone writes off someone as in-depth and complex as Adachi was as some angsty, whiny teenager, especially if they played the series or watched the show or even watched this video. It’s just another example of how when someone doesn’t understand something, they write it off as something else like it’s meaningless, the main idea behind it completely going over their heads. That’s entirely like disregarding all the hard work a person put into making something amazing with a “He’s so edgy and whiny” and I think it’s naive to think that way, to say the very least.

orange ninjaguy The point isn't that Adachi is wrong. The point is that there's more to life than his narrow point of view. His tragic backstory doesn't give him the right to kill 2 women or unleash chaos in Inaba. He's literally crying because he didn't have his way, but decides to close himself instead of bonding with people to heal his emotional scars. even though adachi seems to be making sound arguments, never forget he is a fool. he says that everybody becoming shadows is what they want, but really he's just projecting. he despises talent, yet if everyone became shadows, adachi would have been the only talented person alive. he seems to want to even the playing field, but really he just wants to have everything for himself. even with his logical reasoning, adachi still uses other people for his own twisted reasons that dont match up with the reasons of everybody else who most likely would not want to turn into shadows or die in a fog. dont let adachi fool you. he doesnt give a damn about the world. only for himself.
Adachi is 27 according towards the wikipedia on Persona 4. This man has a decade of experience in the real world where his credentials (best of the best) landed him in some small town out in the boonies where there is barely nothing to do and his pay rate reduces him towards buying cabbage a lot. Not only that, but his rare moments of approaching single women have brought him misfortune. Of course, he'll flip out like this. His actions have not brought him the results he wanted and I sympathize with that. Almost 5 years outta high school and I realized my actions have not brought me the results that I WANTED. a part time job that pays me a wage that hasn't kept up with inflation and going to school which has an extremely high tuition that leads millions of people into debt which they can't pay off on stagnant wages. And don't get me started on the dating/hookup scene. Adachi was right, this world truly sucks ass. A group of teenagers in high school (a pop star, a detective, a son of a department manager, daughter of a family that runs a hotel,) do not know jack shit about how one really needs an unique talent skill that's above the regular people to pursue success. One thing I like about Persona is that these games are above the regular JRPG genre of "save the world from horrible monster". The games make one think about life itself how its everything is not as it seems. Adachi & the investigation team are just people with differing views and that's how conflict arises because of one believing that they are right and the other is wrong. And of course the boss fight wouldn't be too hard when Adachi is by himself. Same thing with the real world. If one complains about his/her problems, it is always their fault. Its never the system's fault.
Nah, Adachi is pretty messed up. Talent or not, he went and decided to start killing people for fun, rather than trying to change his situation in life. If you can’t fight an uphill battle so much that you gotta yeet people to hell, maybe you weren’t cut out for the real world, soz Adachi. I agree with you though that it’s a pretty strong message. Atlus never slacks in that department, clearly. That’s also what I love about the Persona series!

The biggest problem I have with this scene is not that I think Adachi is ''right''. He clearly needed to be stopped, he had no justification for what he did and he needed to be put down. The issue I have with this scene is that I don't feel like the ''good guys'' really gave him proper responses to what he said. Feels like they were talking about other stuff, basically Adachi ''This is why the world sucks(explains)'' , and anyone on the team basically responds with ''STFU DUMBASS LIFE IS HARD BUT YOU'RE STILL DUMB''. Seriously, look at every reply they give, 90% of them are saying ''NU UH, FUCKER''. Naoto was the only one who said anything worth actually reading as a proper response. I understand the team had every right to basically shout at him after he caused so much trouble, but it feels like the writers shifted the tone to imply that Adachi had lost the argument and just devolved into yelling and being angry, when in truth nothing he actually ever said was contradicted or even challenged at all, which sort of broke my immersion in the scene...just kinda left me scratching my head.
I think it's to really reinforce Adachi's point that they're dumb kids. He gives them a long list of reasons for why things are bad gives, admittedly personal and anecdotal, evidence for this. They respond with "no though! You're wrong because... I have a better Persona!" Imagine if this was an entirely speech based debate. The team would get metaphorically wiped the floor with.
+cronnoponno But that's the whole point. That's what the whole game is about. Adachi isn't wrong, and the game acknowledges that fact. Life is unjust, and it brings people down just because. Adachi is a victim of circumstances, he is the reversed Fool. He represents coming to term with reality as an adult. He represents the cruel reality the cast faces when they are coming to adulthood. Even in the anime, at the last episode, Yu straight out admits that given the chance, he will toss out reality out the window for a blissful illusion. That's what makes the game so genius. The enemies the cast faces, are milestones in coming to maturity.
+cronnoponno In anime series Yu actually understood Adachi, to the point he could not force himself to stop him at first. He understood the pain he felt and the fact that it is not fair that he managed to lead a happy life following social norms, wile Adachi did not.
Adachi is a god damn socipath, he killed two woman because they wouldn't fuck with him. He is no victim of the circunstances, if he wanted sucess in life he should've worked hard to get it, not give up and put all the blame in the society like a spoiled kid.
Adachi actions are justified, he is just broken person that had too much for his mind to bare. He is not evil just broken. It is for the main characters to judge him, even though they didn't do anything to help him. What is more, they had their own outburst that could have killed people. But thats how life is, nobody is perfectly good, nobody is perfectly bad. People resort to hypocrisy because admiting to our own flaws can seriously break our minds. If they admited to themself that they are at fault not him, they might not have bared it and could go crazy like him.
70% of the reason i like adachi is because his voice actor delivers the lines so well and i do like him as a surprize antagnist. i mean come on no one saw that one coming he was such a goof ball for 90% fo the game
This is still to this day a masterpiece of writing. Neither side is right because despite speaking directly to one another they can’t understand a single thing about each other. Life has beaten adachi down into jaded sociopath, and when he tries to explain this very fact, the group just call him a monster and ignores his suffering deeming it a weak excuse, but in turn Adachi calls out the naïveté of their every word and rationale. It doesnt make him right, but it hammers in how the IT while only having the best of intentions are just a bunch of naive, idealistic kids. They’re just as Adachi says, with the sole exception being Yu, who reaches out to everyone no matter what and BECAUSE he sees their struggles, and Naoto who’s the most logical and had the closest experiences to Adachi himself. It’s not a matter of if Adachi or the IT are right, it’s a matter of “to what degree do you the player end up finding *yourself* understanding Adachi? And what does that say about you...?”
>ignores his suffering lol lmao even. He's got a cozy job in the boonies with very little going on, and he's even free to procrastinate whenever he wants. @@Idasukimase probably too late to this conversation but I don't think you understand the thought process of someone like adachi. It's not about where you live or how ""bad"" your life is. As someone who has a similar experience, it is rather the small things. Its the boredom with the feeling and despair that nothing will ever change. As well as your outlook on the world. He has a negative outlook which makes everything negative when it's at his extreme. Especially when he listened to his parents and for-went connections to get a position that was almost just as quickly taken from him. He probably started to ask himself why any of it even matters. That nothing will ever change. ""What did I do to deserve this??"" True. There is alot of factors that affect your view on life. My point exactly. The IT don't like Adachi because he uses these points to justify his actions and that Adachi makes innocent people scapegoats and kills them for the things he did. Which did make him look like a "brat that was throwing a tantrum when things don't get his way". Bottom line is, although Adachi does tell the truth, it doesn't justify his actions which is why the IT came to stop them. ATLUS made sure of that, at least.
those deaths were entirely preventable though. it's not that two people died in the last six months, it's two *extra* people died in the last six months
When you listen to naoto’s response it basically sums up Adachi. He was really trying to live alone severing ties with humanity and other people is impossible to live in. Adachi not getting his way was really a Temper tantrum he was throwing but masking it as a boredom remedy. as someone who tried to live alone this hit really hard. Adachi’s Definitely my favorite villain.
"He refuses to acknowledge any other viewpoint" So, he's just as bad as the investigation team? They refuse to acknowledge that Adachi has a point and just say "Nope, you're bad, fuck you." and kick his ass. The Adachi from P4A put it pretty well. Going around, playing guessing games just because they can, how are they different than a criminal that gets their kicks out of murdering people?

It kind of annoys me what they did with this scene in the anime, here, he calmly tell you why he did what he did, and why he thinks it's the right thing, while the investigation team screams like a bunch of angered simple minded, self righteous brats, while in the animation it's the other way around, with adachi screaming like a kid on a tantrum.
KRaZyxR0FL He has a good voice actor... but it changes the tone of the whole scene, and that's something i can't accept in my adaptations, not in extremely plot-important moments at the very least.
" the investigation team screams like a bunch of angered simple minded, self righteous brats" Would you not be angry if you came across the man who killed someone you really cared about (yosuke - saki) and how is condeming the actions of a murder self righteous, especially after admiting he did it for fun. I'm just saying I think the characters emotions are well justified.
mikey hanrahan No, i wouldn't, but that's just me, from your point of view, it's justified, wich is neither wrong nor right, while i think they are annoying, simple minded, self righteous, and lack emotional control, wich is neither wrong nor right, we simply have different points of view.
nicosisX You need help. Your defending a sexist and a psychopath. Obviously the kids are gonna be angry when facing the person who took their loved one away.
Look, Adachi's backstory - however 'tragic' - isn't a defence for his crimes by ANY means. It does nothing to reduce his guilt, or you'd have judges showing sympathy to people like the Columbine killers. While the investigation team doesn't debate Adachi here, they did that in the bedroom confrontation. We already know by this point it's just a game for him; nothing can justify that. Everyone deals with shit in life. It's how you respond to it that defines you.
@@SonicMegaKing Well, his backstory consists of him being isolated in school due to his parents forcing him to study thoughout his life (and maybe that his parents drive away people he can socialize with so he focuses on his studies more), so he doesn't have anyone to lean on. Plus he worked hard to get into the police force and rambles about genetic talent which he didn't have. And your group consists of that talent or something handed down to them, (Yosuke), Yukiko, Rise, Kanji, and Naoto. (Mainly Rise and Naoto)

@@goldengloves7549 I forget the reason why I posted this, but looking back at it. I never said it was tragic, the person I responded to said there was little information on his backstory, so I just took the time to lay out the backstory of Adachi. With slight speculation, I think? That’s it.
Adachi is a character you don't want to relate to, you wish you didn't relate to, but you do. You wish you didn't have anything in common with a person who murdered two women, but you do. Adachi's just a normal guy. He's not overtly creepy like Mitsuo, or utterly delusional like Namatame. Those are the sorts of people we'd like to believe are murderers. Those people look like murderers and sound like them. Adachi doesn't, he seems like the sort of guy you'd go drinking with or play some games. And he is that, he is a normal guy. Some part of the way Adachi acts for most of the game is a facade, but some of it is genuine. He really is just an average Joe trying to make it through the hell that is adult life one day at a time. And he's also a murderer. The idea that a normal person, someone just like us, is capable of such heinous things if pushed to the limit, is scary. It's a reminder to nurture your soul rather than neglecting it, like Adachi did. A lot of what Adachi's saying here is true, but it's a pretty bleak and unproductive way to look at life. Even if optimism is stupid, it may lead you down a better path than the one Adachi chose to walk.
Wow, I kinda agree with Adachi on some stuff. People in the real world really ARE self-righteous. They all claim to know best, and they think they know what to do. They only call other people out on their crimes, and never really take any blame. O top of that, everyone complains endlessly about how things are, but few people ever try and change themselves. They just assume it will happen if they all pray or something for long enough. Makes me cry how easily the good guys ignore all this.
The scariest part about this scene is, Adachi is absolutely right. The only good argument made by the investigation team was "You did that knowing full-well that those people we're gonna die", said by Yosuke, who's not supposed to be the brightest in the group. Everything else, Adachi has a good counterpoint to, or an unbeatable point in the first place. 100% my fav villain of the SMT series (That I've played).
what he says doesn't justify murder and turning everyone into shadows just because he hates the world. As naoto says, he is forcing his ideas to everyone else
When I was a teenager playing this for the first time, I thought Adachi was bad villain. Now, more than 10 years I'm surprised how much I found myself sympthasing and even agreeing with him in some cases
yeah bro it was totally justified of him to try to rape a woman and a teenage girl and to instigate the kidnappings of several teenagers because he was lonely, had a rough childhood and didn't feel recognized in life. totally.
@@Newbturgangur865 I think there’s a good middle ground to be found amongst the two sides of this argument. I find that those saying that adachi is making completely rational arguments and the investigation team are just stupid kids are being ultra edgelords. The reason adachi is a great villain is not because his actions are justifiable by any means, because they’re too vile to justify. But it’s because many people can relate to his struggles to some extent. He didn’t have some cinematically cliched tragic backstory. He was just a lonely person who never got to socialize with people or enjoy life, which makes him extremely bitter towards those who have any joy. The reason Adachi developed a very misanthropic and nihilistic view on life because he was tired of the bullshit average people like him have to face all the time. He absolutely hates everything and sees no value in human life, and this causes him to find entertainment in killing and manipulating. He’s horrible, but the reasons behind it are understandable. I feel many people have gone through rough periods in their lives where they’re sick of everything and dissatisfied with life or have nobody who will truly listen to them. The difference is that these people save themselves by finding something to live for. Adachi could not, and it lead to his destruction. All that said though, there’s no point having a logical debate with a psychopathic serial killer. You’ve won just by virtue of being the better people. No amount of logic can make adachi the winner in this situation.
@@kidnameless i actually completely agree with you, it's just, like you said, the hundreds of people trying to make a misanthropic serial killer look good that drive me insane. there's an understanding for his actions but a lot of these people in the comments section go further than that and think he was straight up good. for the record i haven't played royal or some of the older persona games, and i'm currently playing through 3, so i'd say from my experience so far adachi is my favorite villain in the series.
Talent IS a golden ticket. You can hone your skills as much as you want but, for some things, it just comes down to talent. Either you can do it or you can't. I never expected them to acknowledge that Adachi has a point because I was playing a video game, not watching a social commentary on whether or not people that are gifted at birth have an easier time than others. Whoever wrote the story was trying to go for a clear-cut black-and-white conflict and it came across terribly.
Had that weird moment when you notice that Adachi's voice actor is the same guy who does Izaya Orihara (Durarara) just to find out he also does the voice for Yu (6 episodes) in the Persona the animation.
What I think is so interesting is that Yu starts off as a complete loser as well. His stat descriptions confirm this. He’s apathetic toward others, he’s not all that smart, he isn’t charming, and he’s a coward, but he works on himself and becomes something better. Adachi is just Yu if he never tried to become better and never reached out to find friends
In many ways, Adachi feels like the mirror of Raskonikolv from Crime and Punishment. Both of them murdered two people, both of them were talented and worked hard on their education, and both believed (simplifying a bit) that they deserved better. Yet, they are quite different too. Ras feels guilty, and outside of his murders, does mostly good things, and turns himself in. He also has a good support network with his friends and family, who, despite their poverty, help him even in tough times. Adachi is far more isolated, and even beyond his murders, does not do many good things. I wonder if the developers used Dostovesky as a writing inspiration.
I... guess so. Naoto's dialogue hit me spot on (with me being a loner). But then, I don't want to end up like that guy with an 8-bit character for a Shadow.
it's a little weird, every single time Yosuke starts yelling all I can think is "Sasuke calm down". (Yes, I am aware that Yuri lowenthal voiced both of these charcters. I just hear Sasuke whenever Yosuke yells.)
As much as I love his iconic speech his reasons of killing two women aren't justifiable. Having a terrible backstory isn't an excuse to harm other, he is simply a failure who just took his anger out on everyone. I used to be friends with someone who freaking idolized Adachi and he was just as disgusting as he is.
I get it. Life can and IS naturally difficult. Some may even have it harder than others. But its up to the individual to make life worthwhile. You need to take a step back, look t your situation and say "hm, how can i make this better?". You have to literally exhaust ALL of your options. Just never give up, because thats when youve truly lost.
Astrolightning00 you say that but every three years or so almost all of humanity is always calling some to be God to kill them. Like with Nix seriously f*** Humanity this happens every single time and one time it didn't happen looks at Persona 2.
Would have though I agree, With how Arena is setup there's a huge chance Nyarl coming back and might have been truly behind P3 events, Can't wait for P5 to truly confirm it
I started thinking Adachi was behind it when he did this weird 180 while talking to Nanako in one of the scenes. He always appeared humble and swell, but suddenly as he told her everything was going to be alright he said that he was the smartest guy at the precinct. Wouldn't you say "your dad's the smartest" if your trying to console a little girl. No I think that is the oe moment the mask slipped, and his arrogance showed. What I think makes him so much more interesting then Fish Eyes (Natsuno?), is Adachi puked when he realized what happened to Ms. Yamano. There might have been some genuine humanity in him before he forsaked it, I figure which was after Konishi died. I despise Adachi. He is antithetical to everything I stand for, which makes him a fantastic villain. Kudos for that. Namatame was still my favorite of the "bad guys", what a poor pathetic bastard. Destroyed by one man's lust and cruelty. Adachi was the nail in Namatame's psyche's coffin.
Azoonaloc13 Oh, no Adachi is by far the smartest person at the precinct. Of that I am utterly cofident. Kindness is someti es shed for the sake of intellect. It no less makes him a devious sociopath. Adachi is one of the most malevolent characters I've seen in recent memory.
@@Divinemartyr Well, he managed to dupe every adult officer in the station, manipulate a man into being his UNKNOWING PAWN in this situation, lead an entire team of high school students around in circles and even being an indirect cause for a THIRD murder without having to do anything. He only slipped up once and it took an even better detective to catch it. So yeah, he pretty smart.
(Warning for a rant about this game and how it really connected with me) At one point in my life I was ridiculously depressed and I (unfortunately) had somewhat of the same ideologies as Adachi. I didn’t want to do jack shit, I stopped trying to make friends with others, and I focused purely on grades until eventually that got too tiring and they started dropping. I stopped talking to everyone, shutting myself off from the world. I thought everyone hated me, and I constantly felt worthless compared to others. “Living is too painful for you, but you don’t want to die?!” from Yukiko always ticked me off a little because that was how I was for a while. I was way too tired of everything and I just got to the point where I didn’t even want to be here, but I was also scared to die. A lot of the people I’ve known (including myself) that were suicidal at one point in their lives were using it as a “last resort” and didn’t actually want to do it. But I can understand why it would be confusing at first glance lol, it seems kind of contradictory. Anyways, this game kind of saved me in a weird way. Seeing how Adachi shutting himself off from society affected him and others and the way he was scarily similar to me when I found out the way he was raised kind of taught me a lesson about myself. I was a lot like him in the way that I refused to believe anyone who tried to help me understood what I went through, due to trust issues and having my own mother tell me my feelings weren’t real. I was a sad lonely asshole if I’m being honest. I’m still a bit depressed (+ I struggle with connecting to people still) and there are times where I begin to think those sort of things about the world again, but I’ve been getting help. I think seeing Adachi be able to reform himself and become a better person in arena kind of inspired me to do better myself. Kind of dumb that a game was my ‘savior’ or whatever, but I’ve been ridiculously attached to Adachi’s character and this game since. The simplicity of the root of his issues yet the complexity of his actual mental problems was always my favorite thing about him. He seems so simple yet he isn’t. It was kind of how I was, and how nobody really believed that I could be having mental health problems after being the picture perfect child for so long. I don’t know man I just fucking love this game if it wasn’t obvious LMFAO.
Same, I was once a picture perfect child too, but then a couple of step backs and learning about the true nature of the world has led me down a very dark path.

I'll have to do Adachi for a course, tell all his lines to 2:33 , without any image, sound or script... But just thinking about "dubbing" Adachi is enough to give me courage '^'
I don't know, why but Adachi has always reminded me of Matsuda from Death Note-They are both fairly new detectives who are both don't really read the atmosphere and seem somewhat innocent, until a twist at the end of the story. (Trying not to give away spoilers for newer DN fans.)
My comment is somehow rethorical. You can't really expect a miracle answer to that sort of conversation Despite the things Adachi exposed that isn't reason enough to give up on life.I mean we're humans and as such many people before us persevered dealing with all of this things. No matter if the road we take is hard we always move on forward however the comeout may be good or bad. I agree with you by adding this to High School since nowadays teenagers aren't really into books.I don't like Holden
I hate all these preachy people in the comments acting like Adachi didn’t have a single good point, Naoto was the only member of the investigation team with a decent rebuttal.
it comes down to resiliency.. it's a free-will vs. determinism argument, as well... If we have free will, is it to our benefit or detriment to keep it in tact, or is it better we lose our ability to think differently than animals do; acting other than on instinct and from conditioning.
The IT was proving that although life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, humanity should not decieve themselves just because "it's too hard". Society shouldn't succumb to "the fog" for the sake of moving forward. ATLUS made such a philosophical game. It's deifintely something I'd recommend to teenagers during High School.
I agree with him to an extend. I don't really care what he did as a criminal, if his idea is sound, they are sound. With that said the investigation team didn't even come up with a counter argument but just shouted ridiculous insults at him. This game is certainly deeper than the rest but it is still a video game, and so the writers can't really put in a sophisticated debate. It's a shame too because I got the feeling that the writers really did want to explore Adachi's ideal deeper.
In the anime they had a better counterpoints to Adashi's argument oddly enough. But I think by this point the game creators were trying to move things along and decided they didn't need to make this into a full scale philosophical argument.
oh for fucks sake... what would you do, go have a tea party with Adachi describing the philosophy of how true peace entails a lack of free will? To be a shadow would make you no different than a computer program. Artificial intelligence, at most. It's the imperfections that make us human
"Living is too painful for you yet you don't want die of course nobody would understand you. It makes no sense" Is it wrong i could relate to Adachi so much more than the main characters wtf.
A lot of people do relate to his feelings giving the mundane situation you’d find yourself in life when you’re out of school/grown up. But at the same time, most people will continue on. Nobody really wants to die unless they are at their absolute breaking point be it depression from loss or failure or a life changing moments for the worse.
@@specter_of_thestars2500 I just feel like all of the main cast was too harsh on him, I guess he explain himself comically evil but at the same time I'm also at that point of life that I just really sympathized with him saying yeah the real world sucks, talented people just gets everything, if you don't have it go dwindle on your own few remaining life being miserable you would never get anywhere and It's depressing they won't even try to understand his point of view, but I supposed at the end Dojima still actually cares about him him made the situation a lot better for Adachi.
It’s crazy, hearing Adachi talk about Despair, I’m a big Danganronpa fan and love the Remnants of Ultimate Despair, so anytime someone talks about Despair, I’m intrigued. Especially with how shit the world is.
"Bitches and hoes ain't nothin' but new clothes" -Adachi
Adachi knows what he is talking about. It's kind of funny when he is saying you need talent to have a good life, and look who gets mad, the rich talented idol who would not even know what it is like to be average.
true that
Except he isn't, Adachi's misery is of his own making.
Woah, that was long. Gotta excuse me, got pretty bored and just rambled there.
@@grandmasterjayd1184 Check out P4 Arena if you haven't. Adachi atones and admits he was exactly as you describe.
A truly great villain if you ask me. ;)
that mf is living less than a normal life, how often you gotta eat cabbage because you cant afford anything else
True!
True!
Why would he blame himself?
I think the word "talent" should have been replaced by "opportunity", since that actually covers what he is trying to say much better. Some people work hard. Some people are talented, yet they are never able put all this to use, due to not having the right connections or opportunities.
No, Talent is code word for genetics. The beautiful/athletic people generally have life handed to them. while the betas like adachi get picked on and shit on working 30k a year jobs.
Just speculating but I'm not sure there's one word that properly translates. I expect the original Japanese to contain a word that roughly has both meanings

They basically were proving Adachi's point.
That they were simply too naive for their own good.

Yosuke though was the worst one of them all in my opinion.
@@anthonydeadman The Investigation Team is the Fool arcana after all.
0816 M3RC You were doing so well until you said “I don’t care if he was true to himself he is still a shitty person.”
Allow me to provide you an example of what it must feel like for Adachi.

Adachi said the same thing to Sho. Man, I fucking love Persona.

I have a better Persona!"
Imagine if this was an entirely speech based debate. The team would get metaphorically wiped the floor with.
+Ethan Stansmore So basically modern human reactions to any contradictory idea or thought that would shake their special snowflake opinions?
+cronnoponno
In anime series Yu actually understood Adachi, to the point he could not force himself to stop him at first. He understood the pain he felt and the fact that it is not fair that he managed to lead a happy life following social norms, wile Adachi did not.
Adachi is a god damn socipath, he killed two woman because they wouldn't fuck with him.
He is no victim of the circunstances, if he wanted sucess in life he should've worked hard to get it, not give up and put all the blame in the society like a spoiled kid.
funny thing though is that i found myself siding with adachi during this conversation.
Samson B LOL! Yes evil Sonic go! XD
Same for me. :)
Samson B Of course Nohrian scum would side with him.

Ooh I love this! Brilliant explanation
>ignores his suffering

He's got a cozy job in the boonies with very little going on, and he's even free to procrastinate whenever he wants. He can support himself, doesn't really want for anything, and yet he's "suffering" because he's not the president of the country or something.
Maybe he should take some time to visit a soup kitchen or shelter and see just how blessed he really is.

""What did I do to deserve this??""
As for me mental illness also has a big bad as to the severity (falling behind, loss of opportunity, failure to meet society expectations...even if you can it's harder than it otherwise should be)
I feel that may also play apart although it's just a headcanon
True.
"Two people died in the last six months"
I mean... that's not so bad compare to real life
Yeah but the thing is that there was also 6 disappearances
What about moroka?
comparatively, 1.5 million people die of starvation in that same amount of time
but a murder is a murder
those deaths were entirely preventable though. it's not that two people died in the last six months, it's two *extra* people died in the last six months
"He refuses to acknowledge any other viewpoint"
So, he's just as bad as the investigation team? They refuse to acknowledge that Adachi has a point and just say "Nope, you're bad, fuck you." and kick his ass.
The Adachi from P4A put it pretty well. Going around, playing guessing games just because they can, how are they different than a criminal that gets their kicks out of murdering people?
Maybe because he's throwing a tantrum as Yukiko said? They're not obligated to humour him in a debate when he's trying to destroy the world. People who defend Adachi are so weird.
@@mikei6605 You probably defend the Phantom Thieves for forcibly changing someone's mind to confess their crimes lmfao, they are hypocrites just like you
@@goldengloves7549 the difference between the phantom thieves and adachi is that the phantom thieves arent serial killers who dont care about the world. both the phantom thieves and adachi had to deal with some messed up events in their life, but the phantom thieves really had no other choice than to change the hearts of those who needed to see the truth in order to prove their innocence and to save those who were under the influence of those whose hearts they changed. hell, the phantom thieves even questioned their methods all the time until the bad guy they targeted did some heavy stuff that forces the phantom thieves to act. whereas adachi always had a choice when he got his power, and chose to kill because he couldnt have his way. when the phantom thieves changed hearts, people actually were in support of their actions. not one person supported adachi in his killing spree. so for you to compare the phantom thieves to adachi is, in my opinion, really idiotic and shortsighted.

Well I think they made Adachi the mad screaming person in the anime because his voice was high and it sounded better
Alex Samsara Adachi's backstory, what little we have of it, doesn't sound that tragic.
@@SonicMegaKing Well, his backstory consists of him being isolated in school due to his parents forcing him to study thoughout his life (and maybe that his parents drive away people he can socialize with so he focuses on his studies more), so he doesn't have anyone to lean on. Adachi: Shut u-
Dojima: Shut UP...Adachi. Now I'ma get drunk alone.
I heard Hajime Hinata when Adachi said talent
same here. in fact everytime he speaks here it just reminds me of hajime.

Now, more than 10 years I'm surprised how much I found myself sympthasing and even agreeing with him in some cases
His logic is sound, but it does not change a thing
yeah bro it was totally justified of him to try to rape a woman and a teenage girl and to instigate the kidnappings of several teenagers because he was lonely, had a rough childhood and didn't feel recognized in life.

I never expected them to acknowledge that Adachi has a point because I was playing a video game, not watching a social commentary on whether or not people that are gifted at birth have an easier time than others. Whoever wrote the story was trying to go for a clear-cut black-and-white conflict and it came across terribly.
Adachi must've been doing something right, because he ended up with a persona of his own.

Had that weird moment when you notice that Adachi's voice actor is the same guy who does Izaya Orihara (Durarara) just to find out he also does the voice for Yu (6 episodes) in the Persona the animation.
I used to think like the investigation team when I was younger now that Im 27 I completely agree with Adachi
it's been 77 years now and you're 34, i hope you've mellowed out and enjoy your life more now.
Yuri Lowenthal did wonderful voice acting in this one, as Yosuke. :)
One of the greatest moments in gaming history
I loved how Adachi seemed like a dumb detective at first but ever since I saw him, I knew he was hiding something.

Adachi went up levels in both awesome and creepy in less than eight minutes.
He does make a great villain.

(Warning for a rant about this game and how it really connected with me)
At one point in my life I was ridiculously depressed and I (unfortunately) had somewhat of the same ideologies as Adachi.
Same, I was once a picture perfect child too, but then a couple of step backs and learning about the true nature of the world has led me down a very dark path.

i love how he's just trying to justify killing them.
ADACHI SPITTING HARD FACTS ABOUT THE FUCKING POLICE. Oh my god he put that into words, there it is folks FUCK. -
I agree with him to an extend.
Adachi: you kids are like a plague.
Chie: no u
Adachi is like the embodiment of the internet, and that's why we fucking love him!
the one thing i feel with this guy is living isn't worth it but the fear of death is too strong
It's 4:07AM and i'm surrounded by darkness and I had the volume up and almost had a panic attack...omg
In the anime they had a better counterpoints to Adashi's argument oddly enough. But I think by this point the game creators were trying to move things along and decided they didn't need to make this into a full scale philosophical argument.
Lol. I like Adachi's reason for joining th police: To legally carry a gun.
Just like some people that join the army, to legally kill someone.
oh for fucks sake... what would you do, go have a tea party with Adachi describing the philosophy of how true peace entails a lack of free will?
To be a shadow would make you no different than a computer program. Artificial intelligence, at most. It's the imperfections that make us human
I wanted his fight to be the hardest fight in the game oh well. I’ll just keep my theory that he was holding back and didn’t wanna kill the kids.
I mean, if he wanted to use his powers to make his life less boring, he could’ve done that without taking lives...or putting lives in jeopardy
Exactly
3:00 for those from TikTok
It’s funny since Adachi is hajime
Yup that’s great.
Adachi has Izaya Orihara's voice actor ^__^
I understand you, Adachi
it's more than that. he has izaya's, hichigo's, ichigo's and lelouch's voice actor...theres a few more
oh my god at 1:59 that accurately describes about 80% of the police here in the usa!
1:14 consume the persona chalice
Watching Neon Genesis Evangelion really helps to understand better this speech btw
Same VA, Johnny Yong Bosch. Also did Vash the Stampede and was the second American Black Ranger. Oh, and Ichigo.
