Great nighttime and Christmas video. It was really clear and really showcased the festive atmosphere in Seattle. Thank you for the great share. Keep up the good work 👍
Hello John. The drone plans are superb and the piloting is very controlled and very smooth. I love the images of night flights and the Christmas decorations and Seattle illumination are really stunning🤩🤩. Thank you for sharing👍👍
Nothing to say in both videos, simply they are outstanding and can’t be better with clear, pretty lightings image and relaxing music cover. If people enjoyed watching like me, please give comment a like 👍
Hello! Seattle lights up at night for Jesus Christ! 🙏 Christmas is about Christ, not about santa! Nice city Seattle! Thank you for the video! God bless you all! 🙏
Thanks, Christian. I shot all the footage in that video using Night Mode, which has some big advantages and a few shortcomings. It's easy to use, and so long as the scene has plenty of artificial lighting the results look great. But Night Mode automatically applies heavy noise reduction, which is great on the ease-of-use front, but I can get a little bit better images shooting in 5.1K and applying noise reduction in post. That's not a lot of extra work, but the render times tend to skyrocket.
You did amazing John! Incredibly sharp. My guess is 30fps? I love in the beginning how the lights of the city illuminated the low clouds to give the sky an incredible glow. You nailed it on every shot. Love the lights on the trees shots.
Thanks, Ted! All the footage was in a Mavic 3's Night Mode, which auto sets to 4K/30 fps. I've started recording at night in manual mode, and so far 30fps seems like a good balance of exposure and motion blur. 24fps can be a little jerky is some shots, and 60fps loses a stop of light.
@@johnriper4416 - right on. Thanks for sharing. I’m putting together a full tutorial on night flight tips. Hope you had a great New Year’s Eve! Fly safe. -TED
@@TedNemeth Ted, last night was an incredible night for shooting video, at least here in Seattle where the Space Needle hosted a fireworks display along with a drone light show. I shot it all and uploaded the video a few minutes ago. It's pretty spectacular, and I learned a lot from the experience, the most important lesson being how dramatic night drone footage can be.
John, Nice video. Liked and subscribed. I love the orbit around the needle at the 4:00 mark. I don't have the stomach to fly 600 feet up, and I keep telling myself, TTT (trust the technology) Well done!!! We need to meet up sometime. It looks like you shot early in the AM downtown as there was not much foot traffic. Merry Christmas
Thanks, Lance. You're right about when I was shooting. 3 a.m. turns out to be a great time to get night footage in what normally is a crowded metropolis. It's pretty much just me, the garbage trucks, security patrols, and a few night denizens.
For both those shots I started out standing right behind the drone. For the 2:25 shot in Westlake Center I was literally walking right behind it the whole time, and for the 1:20 shot in Pioneer Square I stayed standing in the street, but it never got further than a few hundred feet away in direct line-of-sight, so the signal stayed really strong. In the skyscraper parts of downtown signal interference can quickly deteriorate, but I've found the bigger problem is losing satellite lock, which can happen no matter how close I am, and then not even RTH is an option.
Thanks, Harry. Yes, it was scary at first, but doing some pretty safe test runs in advance taught me a few things. First, the buildings seem closer in the video than they really are, so getting the drone close enough to look really close isn't the hard part. The hard part is to avoid hitting obstacles above or behind the drone (like when backing up or moving laterally), because the drone IS a lot further back than it seems to be from the controller's screen. Second, visually scouting each shot before flying it showed me a bunch of obstacles I could easily have flown into because they wouldn't have been visible just in the controller screen. And last, keeping the drone if visual line of sight was a big confidence booster, since I could always see the thing wasn't really in danger of hitting anything.
I subscribe to Epidemic Sound. Their instrumental choices are terrific, though they don't have as good a selection of music with vocals. I also generally check TH-cam's audio library (the creative commons one).
Thanks, Adam. I was just re-watching your recent downtown Chicago video, and really love your top-down shots. Once the weather improves (it's about 28 in Seattle right now, though I bet you've got it worse this week than we do), I'm going to go try some of the same kind of shots adjacent to (or between) skyscrapers.
Eye candy night shots! Very well done! Wonderful to see Seatle in this "light"!
Heh, good one. I look forward to seeing more of your videos on your channel.
Love It! 😍 You captured all the spots!! The Mavic 3 shines at Night!!! 🙌

Gorgeous video John, thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Lee! I just wish it was as warm here in Seattle right now as where you are. Freezing rain isn't exactly fun, nor any good for drone flights.
Love watching over and over🙂
Robert, that might be the most encouraging comment anyone on TH-cam has ever received. Thanks!

John, drone shots from 1:20 to 2:25 ?? Did you ever worry about RTH kicking in during this part of the flight?
