In Part Two of the five-part series, we get a crash course in how to be a professional commentator-or "shoutcaster"-at the studios of one of the most popular eSports TH-cam channels. After that, Matt gets his brain zapped by a neuropsychiatrist at one of South Korea's gaming addiction rehab centers, and we try on character costumes at the HQ of the country's best cosplay team.
Today, there are more people in the world who play the online multiplayer battle game League of Legends than there are people who live in France. We wanted to see how humanity got to this point, so VICE host Matt Shea flew to South Korea, a country where competitive gaming-also known as eSports-can either make you rich and famous or land you in rehab.

spixe lated When what you do for fun becomes a job there's a pretty big shift. No longer are you doing something because you want to, but because you have to. There is a problem if the majority of your existence revolves around doing something for fun.

    • @threnody2012

spixe lated I can't say I haven't experienced what he was talking about. When you only play for satisfaction, it's like you're feeding an addiction. I remember I had way greater feelings of "addiction" for games when I was playing single player games or doing grinding and gear farming stuff in MMOs and getting the satisfaction of leveling up, getting new gear, getting to new sections of the game, basically doing what the game was designed for and it sets off my reward centres etc... whereas if I picked up a competitive game and wanted to get better I actually needed to be focused and play with more purpose in each session. It can also be a more collaborative thing where you have to participate in a community and you can discuss/talk about what to do in certain situations, where you need to build up more advanced game knowledge and practice things beforehand.

      1) It's true that League of Legends WORLDS 2017 racked up 280 million LIVE viewers, not counting how many re-watched it on the re-broadcast 4 hours later, basically it would total to about 500-600 Million people watched WORLDS 2017, while only 90 if not 70 Million watched the NBA finals. 2) League of Legends Championships are streamed through ESPN (An American US Sports Television network) Twitch, TH-cam and other big streaming platforms in China + others. 3) The US Government and the EU Union + around 90% of Asia agrees that E-Sports are infact sports. 4) E-Sports is by far the most viewed and biggest sport in Asia, as this year (2018) The Asian Olympic Games will host E-Sports for the first time, with a prize pool of I BELIEVE 25 Million.

lol.. I don't really know about shocking the patients but I do know addiction has to do with the reward pathway from Areas 8-10 of cortex. The way he was shocking the guy, it did look as though he was shocking the insular cortex. Saying it 100% quackery would be kinda harsh, but maybe they should show brain scans before and after and show proof that it works before testing on live people first. I would really be worried if it fucked up some other part of brain functions. However, I do agree with the doc saying internet addiction should be more about controlling use of internet instead of stopping its use. Maybe they should find them a better hobby lol

The interviewer seems like he doesn't even want to be there, they should have got someone else to do it. I mean just cause he doesn't like league of legends doesn't mean there isn't someone else who does. This was an opportunity, others would have loved.(I don't even like esports but still disappointing)

Video game addiction isn't the problem, the problem is all those Asian parents who push their kids to far and threaten to excommunicate their child if they don't become succesfull and rich doctors and lawyers. I'd probably snap to. The internet is a good place to seek shelter, forget about problems and find social contact with others who feel the same way.
You don't have to fix the kids, fix the parents and the kids will be fine.

"Internet addiction"... just because they play too much games. But, unlike here, over there you can actually make a living from playing those games. So it's almost like saying someone is training too much for Football or Basketball and should be put in rehab.
But I can see why you'd want to limit kids, they'll take it too far.

Felt like i was wasting, had difficulty staying awake even when i slept a full 7-9 hours of sleep. So i turned to drugs, thanks to drugs i am no longer addicted gaming. Science and a common sense says that playing video-games is much more profitable, better and less dangerous than drinking alcohol or any of that toxic drug liquid. It's the future.

I remember the good old MLG days when competitive gaming was at its prime. HALO 2 was just searing off when HALO 3 came into works. I can honestly say as a huge nerd, i spent 12-15 hours hours a day for about 2 months playing that game. Yes, i did become semi-pro and made a bunch of great friends. Vice, good on ya for covering this. E-Sports is a thing thats going to be MASSIVE in teh future, not that isnt huge right now. Down the line you'll have it on TV's all over the world. there will be 50 million dollar tourneys being played. It's literally like any other sport out there. Only difference the atheles arent required to have good physical abillites but they have to be really good mentaly and quick on their fingers. people who dont say its a sport, clearly haven't played at a high level. I was a semi competetive player (semi meaing i didnt do it for a living but made money off of it). I played about 6 hours a day while working out + working part time. "internet addiction..." give me a break. GO OUTSIDE AND READ A FUCKING BOOK OR SOMETHING. i understand that addictions can form in adulthood, but how were these people parented? i'm not a doctor, but it's my personal belief people with addictions can stem from problems with parenting or in childhood. but with things like this, gamers most likely start when they're kids, so i'm just curious how or why their parents didn't limit or watch their gaming to circumvent problems in later life

    • @Fr0stBlade

***** I think you would find most kids that have gaming addictions later in life were denied access when they were younger. If you like doing something getting someone else to take it away will not stop you wanting to do it and once you have the freedom to do whatever you want you will do it in excess. A friend of mine that I grew up with had this exact issue. To stop an addiction the addict needs to actually want to stop.

killercaos123 fun fact: you can have opinions or experience on things even if you're not educated in a field. crazy right? but i guess i'm not allowed to have experience or any say on things like how doctors can fuck you up on "medication" from growing up with my adhd nephew and seeing how his pills only made him worse or watching first hand how drug addiction can destroy people mentally, physically, and divide families. what would i know about those topics anyway. i've seen people go through addiction late in life and early and like i said, i know it can have a later onset, but this gaming addiction is shit brought on by the media and what koreans think is important

I'ts hard even for me to imagine what it would be like to be so heavily invested, possibly addicted, in games to this level of an extreme. I've been an online gamer since the mid 90's. I started with games like Diablo 1, and Command and Conquer. My gamer tag has been around in one variation or another longer than a many of gamers I play with have been alive. I've had over a year of in-game time in World of Warcraft alone. I've held top in game rankings on Xbox, Play station, and PC games. Most people would call it abnormal, possibly an addiction, but I've always been able to walk away. Rarely ever have I avoided social situations in reality in preference to my games. There have been times I've played a game for 15-16 hours in a day. I cut back a lot recently, down to maybe 45 minutes a day average. All that being said, I wonder what a comparison between my brain and one of a none gamer would show. I'd never submit to any form of shock therapy to "fix" anything, I am who I am, and it's never prevented me from living the rest of my life.

I dunno personally I think asymetrical PC games take far more skill, the playing field is much more level. Things like 'gear', 'characters' and other features are much more basic and do not require much to obtain. Yes you can carry on LoL and do a lot as a single player, but in a FPS a engagement (pvp) is very quickly determined on skill level. In general a amazing player with good reaction, macro/micro etc can be countered in LoL or RPG games by things such as gear, line of sight and skills that can deny frags.

    • @Carltoncurtis1
      @Carltoncurtis1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The typical GOOD fps has MANY ways to respond to strategize so that skill does not guarantee a win. It's not just a feature of LoL or an RPG but of any good PC game. The difference between LoL and CS is that the choices are just not as visible but they are there nonetheless.
When 1v1ing my brother in CS 1.6 waaay back in the day. I had to plan ahead and strategize so that I was in an advantageous position BEFORE I ran into him on the map because his pure aimskill was insane and I had a cheap, shitty mouse lol.
Camped, Footsteps, Smoke/flashbangs and used MP5 and pump shotty only. Won most the time. Called me a no-skill shitter which I was but guess what...
      Art of War Chapter 1.
_The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought._
Is it FUN to play like that? Fuck no. But a good warrior doesn't do what he wants, but what he *must*, to win.
Besides noone can design a game where it where pure skill = winning. It would have to limit the player choice and if noone could strategize against skill then every match would be a one sided stomp and nobody would play that game.

Although it will never be as big as an actual sport, it's growing everywhere. South Korea is just ahead of everyone... Call of Duty is HUGE in the US for E-Sports, Europe is CSGO, and Things like League and World of Warcraft just seem to be universal in terms of popularity. It's just insane how sitting behind a monitor can bring such glory. I mean I fall guilty to playing competitive COD, even though I'm on pace to play college baseball, but that's not the point. I'm saying, if me an ATHLETE can have a ton of fun with competitive games, it doesn't surprise me that a large part of the population that is not involved in any extensive extra-curricular activity falls into the trap too. But hey, it's fun! So don't be surprised to see MASSIVE growth in the coming years around the globe to the competitive gaming industry.

Do you seriously have this statement at 2018?
People 3 years ago obviously couldn't predict if league would keep growing or not.
Fortnite is nearly topping the most played game ever because how popular it is at the moment. LoL and Minecraft have been out longer, which means they have more downloads & players. But they fail to strive their popularity over the years which means less players play those games. Fortnite is growing at a much faster rate than those games did years ago.
How can u talk about league dota and csgo which are all dead games compared to fortnite?
And don't think I'm a fortnite fanboy i used to be pretty high rank back at s4 on league but this is the truth about popularity right now..
