So I watched this movie with my parents, and they didn’t care much for it. They said it was boring and far too slow. However, surprisingly, that was my favorite element. It was relaxing, and it made you slow down and look at every detail. It takes you on every moment Paterson goes through in his day. And the repetition acts like a “spot the difference” picture puzzle, which makes the differences not only obvious to you, but you through the eyes of Paterson. He is content. He loves his life. His wife is eccentric and tries something new every day. Paterson is simple. They harmonize well. Maybe it’s mostly cause it’s Adam Driver, and I love the idea of domestic life Adam Driver. But also, I stick by what I said. The slowness is one of the best parts. It’s not for everyone, but if you feel as if you need a break from everything trying so hard at once to get your attention every day, I would say give this movie a try.
Ah... Your comment is perfect. Yes... this is the way I would describe this movie. You stole the words from my mind and made me love this film even more.
Saw it today, I did not know what this movie was about nor watched the trailer and I enjoyed it. It's definitely not an action packed movie or intriguing one. It's a character study I guess with the audience following Patterson played by Adam Driver (who I didn't know btw, no I don't live under a rock lol) going through his daily activities and his girlfriend Laura. It's such a simple storyline, there is no twist whatsoever, but it does make you pause at the end. It will make you feel something for sure, it's beautiful somehow, I don't know how to describe it, but when I left the theater I felt renewed, like I wanted to write And create and start a project, inspired.
So, GoodLyfe, I hope you know that for any storyteller, your response is the pinnacle. What did you do? Did you start a story? a project? Has something been bubbling up from your deepest brain?
Loving young couple, just starting out, they support each other, budding talents, setbacks but glimpses of future success: American Dream. Classic formula for a great movie, a great story, but this time in a prosaic, unexpected setting.
Can I just highlight the relationship between him and his wife?? Thats what all marriage should be, both of them were so loving and supportive to each other, the wife with his poems and he was supportive of all the crazy things she came up with, their relationship was my favorite part of the movie
@@lainoh9578 which led to their dog tearing up his secret poem book. and when the Sunday title card shows, she is clearly devastated almost as much as he is; she understands
i watched marriage story, blackkklansman and hungry hearts today/yesterday. they are PHENOMENAL. truly. he's an incredible actor and has worked with some great storytellers and directors. give them a try. i'll watch this movie next!
_Beauty is often found in the smallest details._ I'm feel content knowing that there are still individuals like Jarmusch who contribute to the Arts in such an exquisite way; individuals who honour politeness, elegance, subtlety, style. Thank you, Jim Jarmusch.
Or maybe it's a prequel to The Force Awakens. He failed at being a Jedi, then he failed at being a poet so he decided to be a Sith, not a very good one either.
In an uncertain way, this is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen throughout the course of my entire life (and I am a cinephile). This film can always cheer me up and help to appreciate the beauty of everyday life, especially in the world where we chase everything and live in a hurry. For me it works like some kind of meditation... it makes my mind zen. No words in english vocabulary can replicate spectrum of feelings I had during my first time watching this piece of art. It was so poetic and heartwarming... and it still is, because "Paterson" is so rewatchable. Besides that, it is a wonderful inspiration for all artists around the globe to persist creating and expressing themselves, no matter if they want to share it with the rest of the world or not. Jim Jarmusch, thank you
I don’t know if we can (and need to) really agree or feel the same about anything, but if we could, I couldn’t agree more with your beautiful words. I just watched the movie for the fifth time probably, and reading the comments here and sharing the awe about it with other people just adds to my love and enjoyment of it. I’m using words, but it’s kind of hopeless. Anyway… 😌
First time I saw this film I thought, "Oh, geeze, what has somebody done now." But it stayed with me, somehow, and I ended up re-watching months later. Fell in love with this film. The movie itself is a poem. Lovely lovely lovely.
I'm used to watching some really messed up, morbid dramas and this movie was a welcome change. a very intimate and poetic movie that made me feel at peace, i highly recommend it!
I kept waiting for something bad to happen- to the dog, an argument between him and his wife, a shooting on the bus, whatever. But nothing of the sort happened. This film reminded me to just calm down and relax. I really loved it. Weeks after watching it I kept thinking about it. I’ll definitely watch it again.
That's also my dream type of guy too (I'm a female), I think a person who is like that no matter what gender is a person you want to be around and who is genuine and not toxic with hidden agendas etc. :)
I think more than what the person actually is, it's about how we see them. A girl like Laura might come your way and you might see her as bland and boring or some other thing. Maybe you meet her at a wrong period of her life, maybe you see one bad quality in her personality and overanalyze her personality based-off of that particular act. We obviously don't see a person as a whole before deciding on what they mean to us. Essentially, what I want to say is just what Plato said years ago: "Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder." I would go one step further and say: "Ugliness too, lies in the eyes of the beholder."
I absolutely loved this movie- The plot is a bit slow at times but the realness and lack of predictability and other elements make it a great watch. Real people living in a real pace where things get rusty and weeds overgrow in yards and sidewalks - people with real jobs -Compared to the big budget movies where everything and everybody is perfect and the good guy wins
I mean compared to the rest of your comment, the "a bit slow at times" comment is redundant then cause isn't life full of slow and fast paced moments? 2020 sure slowed us all down to really self reflect on what we wanted out of life. A life that is truly lived isn't fast all the time, nor is it slow all the time. It's a mix because we never know what is coming, all we know is how to adapt.
A quiet gentle movie about routine, rhythm and domesticity. Also about poetry and the creative urge which is tempered by the need to work to make a living. Differences between a couple are explored- his woman's spending whims (the guitar purchase etc), but they compromise and her cupcake making scheme actually made a profit. The youngsters would say it contains a lot of contact with "randoms", eg the young girl who also likes poetry and writes poems. I like the way the film provokes viewer anticipation and expectations the way it does: eg when he sat down with that girl and talked to her a lot of viewers would have been alarmed at an adult male engaging with a female minor, but it was normal and it showed a meeting of minds. I like a film with this kind of realism. Go see Manchester by the Sea too, it also highlights a real place in America on the east coast.
I was very impressed by this movie. At first glace Paterson is a repressed and isolated individual, but as you get to know him you understand he is a man deeply in love and with a magical connection to the universe. The actress who plays his wife is perfect in the role and stunning. She makes him completely believable. The move does require a high degree of attention and patience, but its well worth it.
This was honestly and admittedly my favorite film of last year. I ordered the regular Blu-ray and I can't wait for it to come out so I can sit back, relax, & rewatch. Maybe (hopefully), it will get a Criterion Collection like other Jarmusch films, because I wouldn't think twice about purchasing this twice...

what a wonderful film...lack of "action" and drama hasn't looked this good in ages. Bless Jarmusch and his idiosyncratic heart. And - do I get a cookie for not making a dumb "Star Wars" joke or Adam Driver pun here?
When did they film this movie? I live in Paterson and I never noticed any film crew 🤔 This is so wild to me; seeing places I literally walk past everyday be included in a full-length feature film is so weird lol I never would have imagined Paterson being the subject of an "artsy/indie" film 😂
This looks good because it doesn't look like another movie about a laid back charismatic bright guy burning days until a breakthrough, it looks like a movie about said guy just living the life and enjoying it. And yes, I just reviewed a trailer. How low we have fallen.
I just finished watching this and then watched the trailer. What I noticed is that I missed somethings when watching the film that have become apparent only now after seeing the trailer like the link between his girlfriend’s dream about twins and the number of twins he sees, but I hadn’t even realised the connection. I wasn’t paying much attention to the small details. Now I have to watch the film again sometime soon because I’m sure I’ve missed other things too. It’s really a beautiful film.

The repetitive structure of the film with occasional variations was surprisingly satisfying. Also, the city of Paterson seemed to me a fascinating American Konigsberg and Paterson, the driver, an American Kant. I loved all the characters including the English bulldog ;-) Very good film, indeed.
After seeing the film before this trailer, which the film is phenomenal by the way, it's kind of hilarious to see the trailer give away 90% of the most "exciting or funny" parts of the film, but it's a 2 hour experience worth taking despite the fact that the trailer gives away a lot of its key points of charm
everyone's talking about Star Wars, no one seems to be acknowledging the Moonrise Kingdom duo on the bus. I'm so confused, were they there just as a reference to Moonrise Kingdom? I don't get it. Did they just randomly happen to choose those two actors?

another thing about this movie is the question 'what's new?'..normally a film tells a story for escaping your 'normal life' because your life is boring and there's not much new happening..this movie does the opposite and makes you want to go back to your daily life because it's not that boring
Adam finally living up to his last name

I was so excited about that like "hey thats the kid from moonrise kingdom all grown! WAIT! THATS ALSO THE OTHER KID FROM MOONRISE KINGODOM!"
Jarmusch, apparently, is a huge fan of Wes Anderson and Moonrise Kingdom in particular and decided to cast the couple for Paterson
I was so surprised to see OG Jarmusch star Masatoshi Nagase in this! Driver was fantastic, as was Farahani.

0:44 forget poetry, that handwriting is poetic itself.
I adore Adam Driver he is so goddamn beautiful
Jim jarmush, i knew even before i saw it was his film.such a genius.🖤
Very good feeling trailer. Props to whoever made it.
another thing about this movie is the question 'what's new?'..normally a film tells a story for escaping your 'normal life' because your life is boring and there's not much new happening..this movie does the opposite and makes you want to go back to your daily life because it's not that boring
When you're a sith lord and you get fired and have to drive a bus. Poor Kylo
