Honestly I think Rohan is the perfect JoJo character for a serial like Thus Spoke. His whole motivation is to gain a larger understanding of the world around him so he can then funnel that into his art, and so he's naturally going to be extremely curious and investigative. This combined with the fact that he's a very eccentric personality makes it very interesting to watch his perspective bounce off of whatever bizarre (hah) and fucked up situation he finds himself in. He's a bit like a golden age detective in that regard, and I think it's no coincidence that a lot of Thus Spoke stories involve him investigating some mysterious phenomena.
I think that every author ends up projecting themself into one or more characters when writing their work. Despite what many people think, self-insertion is a good writing practice, as long as said projection does not consist of the author seeing themself as a perfect being every one loves without hesitation
I like this comment. I wouldn't call myself a writer because I lack motivation and have no major projects, nor any compositions of acceptable quality, but I spend a lot of time creating characters and their stories in my head. I often say that "every character is a self-insert" because many characters and their traits are based off not only my interests but aspects of my own personality.
theres a difference between a self insert as a way to truly understand a trait or more and thus flesh out that in the character, and a self insert thats just the author with no flavor or reasoning just for the sake of it
Yeah! I’m in the process of writing a story with a hundred main characters, and all of them have bits of myself in their designs and personalities, especially the villain.
Self inserting is good writing practice? Practice for what? Getting popular on Wattpad or Tumblr? Self inserts are either humours or lazy. Never just good. It's fine to take examples or references from real people, but straight up inserts are terrible, regardless of whether or not said insert is perfect.
I love how Rohan, despite being only a supporting character, is still mentioned in parts 5 and 6, while Josuke and Giorno just vanished after their arcs ended. You can tell Araki TRULY loves Rohan 😂😂😂
Love you championing the TV Drama. I watched through it for the first time with a group after we finished the anime, and we all loved it. My favorite might be their take on "Let's Go Eat Some Italian Food/Poaching Seashore." And yes, the chemistry and performances by the actors is excellent. I really associate them with the characters at this point. It's also just really nice to look at, beautiful locations and cinematography. I really hope we can continue to get more episodes. I just love spending time with this particular version of the series.
I like too! Rohan and Izumi was good, "Kusyagara" based on novel was good, and "Poaching Seashore" with Tonio, and Janken Kozo... were all so good. I'm really happy that this drama is being appreciated by people who don't know manga or anime, and that more people are becoming interested in Jojo.
I really like that Rohan is the character among all the others that transcends timelines and storylines. He incarnates curiosity and shattering society's gaze which is perfect, I think, to represent Jojo's as a whole. His being a manga artist also hits two birds with one stone as he also represents the work on its own, softly breaking the fourth wall, as if to grab the audience's hand and showing them the behind the scenes in a thoughtful way. In a sense, anything Rohan does is a commentary on manga and Araki's work, but done diegetically, so done pretty seamlessly and naturally. Lastly, him having a temper is also interesting as it breaks the idea that the main character has to be this knight in shining armour (like Jonathan, or something). He basically embodies the concept of character writing. All those things make him the perfect mascot, of sorts, I think.
Very interesting video! I honestly hadn't thought much about the ways Rohan mirrors Araki besides being a mangaka. Now I'm even interested in watching the TV Drama.
a self insert can also be what the author wishes they could be, which i think rohan could totally be. so for the most part i do think he is a self insert, just not a very egregious example of one. I dont really care either tho because he isnt just that anyway, hes a character that has developed over time like any other and i find him very compelling regardless
The way I see it, the relation between Rohan and Araki is the same between Black Jack and Osamu Tezuka (especially since Tezuka apparently felt the same way). They are essentially inserts of their creators insofar as they pastiche their profession/training but their characters are played up and augmented to actually drive the story. It's less that they're self-inserts in an egotistical sense and more that they're to explore the world around them.

It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that a character is a self insert because they exhibit a few superficial traits as the writer, but while it's true that Rohan is a mangaka and Araki sees a lot of himself in him, it's pretty clear that Rohan is just a way for Araki to tell stories about a mangaka, using his own experiences to generate an accurate point of view for the character while still writing him as a unique individual distinct from himself. This is probably why Rohan seems to get special treatment as well; these similarities provide Araki with unique opportunities to tell stories from a viewpoint that hits close to home for him.

Don't know if Rohan is a self insert, but I definitely thinks he's Araki's favorite character. But, defending on how you look at it. All characters are drawing from parts of the artist/ creator. If Araki thinks Rohan is cool he is depicting what he thinks is cool. If Rohan is smart its Arakis interpretation of what he considers to be a smart character. I think Rohan would be the biggest reflection of what Araki would at the very least like to be like. Curious, passionate, smart, cool, a little snarky, but ultimately a good man. I would be very concerned if Araki ever retired or killed Rohan off.
In your "Debunking Araki Forgot Part 4" video, you mentioned that Star Platinum revived Joseph by acting as a defibrilator. But what Star Platinum did was actually the opposite since defibrilator stops beating heart and not vice versa. Also, in "Debunking extras 1" video you said that it was Ermes' back depicted in the panel with someone carrying the pendant, but in Part 6 anime/manga differences you said that it was Gwess
There's also an element of "wish fulfillment" - every artist dreams of powers that can make drawing faster! (But interesting that Rohan's greatest power is informational.) Also, lucky for all the other characters he doesn't use his re-write power constantly to solve everything, or ruin it. (Does it have limits that aren't mentioned?)
see, i love this. because rohan is so complex and well developed, and how deeply he cares for people, it throws how much he hates Josuke into muuuuch more contrast and thus makes me feel even more validated in hating him BECAUSE he hates josuke. but hes a great character!
even if rohan is a self-insert, he is one of the best written ones. when people write a self insert it's usually a power fantasy for them and those are always boring. araki exagerrates rohan's skills but also his flaws and makes him eccentric as is expected of a jojo character.
People trow around the word "self-insert" too much, especially as an insult. I love Rohan, he's the perfect protagonist for a spin-off like Thus Spoke because he's truly the kind of guy who would go through all this shit just for a story. The Man has 0% impulse control. I especially love how he's still kind of an asshole all these years later, other writers would have sanded off those edges a long time ago, but not Araki he reveals in them.
Rohan is a wish fufillment character if amything. He can finish his chapters so fast he can have a social life. Which says more about how grueling Arakis schedule was for more than a decade.
You didn't mention it but the song "Finding The Truth" by Coda the op for the ova is also the perfect song for Rohan from it's themes and lyrics, and the short instrumental version which is actually used for the ova is also really good because of it's mysteries theme. Kinda weird you didn't bring this up because you used the song in every video.
Don't think he's a self insert, just a case of the favorite character of the author and that shows. Don't think there's a problem with this, but i wish there was more official spin off of other characters besides him. At least kira got one
If anything it just goes to show how good of a writer Araki is that his own self insert is not only loved by the community but also popular enough to get his own spin-off
I don't think he's a self insert but he was made with the same process as how Stephen king has a few stories where the main character also happens to be a writer or how alot of them also live in maine
The story about mai is so sweet, as an autistic and trans girl can def relate to the idea of accepting that it isnt a disease, but just the true expression of oneself
(in the anime) In part 6, when Jolyne gets sent to the detention ward. A prisoner throws his crap at Jolyne and manages to hit her. Based on the layout provided, only one prisoner could have thrown their crap (the one directly across from her). The issue is the bars on the door provide little to no possibility of the crap hitting her. Given the force required to make such a toss and it couldn't be a hot steamer, it is possible that prisoner is a random stand user. Now its possible I'm making a mountain out of a ant hill. I believe this issue needs addressing in the next hot takes.
Cannot wait for your vid about other things u like. Also what is your stance on kinnikuman? I would love to hear your thoughts on it since the anime based on the first arc of the 2011 manga has come out and season 2 is coming out next year!
@Hamon_Beat definitely check it out! The manga 's current arc is still ongoing also the anime is 🔥. They even got the OG va for kinnikuman himself in it.
Rohan says he completes 19 pages in 4 days by himself, Mr. Araki replied in column (around 1989 Part 3 J.Geil battle) that he spent 6 hours for designing, and 3 days for drawing with assistants(I think 4 or 5) Rohan is not Mr. Araki's self-insert, and Mr. Araki replied that Rohan is his dream manga artist. but considering that many manga artists work all night, Mr. Araki's skill in completing a manga with a lot of drawing is insane
Before the video: It'd be weird if Araki hated the main character of the current part, so probably not. With him also being a manga artist though, I imagine he still put bits of himself in there.
Before watching the video, I wanted to give my current thoughts to see if they would change by the end.... From my point of view, Rohan is definitely a self insert (being a more exaggerated take on himself), BUT that's not a bad thing. Because the thing about self inserts is that they aren't bad in nature. Rather, they have common pitfalls that come from them being so closely related to the author... pitfalls that Rohan actually avoids primarily because Araki has enough self relfection to realise that an extremified version of himself and someone with an ability like Rohan's would be pretty weird. Rather, the problem with Rohan might just come from the fact that, since the character is based on Araki, he has a much easier time of writing him, which resulted in him being everywhere. Edit: After going through the video, I do think of him less as a self insert... that being said, I do still think he is a more exaggerated form of Araki... more specifically, a version of himself more fitting of JoJo, being one who is more concerned with his work than morals. 14:42 Also the explanation you give here kinda just sounds like the explanation for what a self insert is... or at least a type of self insert...
Rohan has crazy insane potential, but what I really like is when JoJo sometimes shows characters who seemingly have no potential and give them a almost perfect scenario where their ability can really extent far, sometimes even further than some of the more powerful characters out there.
Hamon Beat, I have a question for your next "Debunking Araki forgot" videos I don't remember if you've mentioned it but I'll need to rewatch your series too It might be a translation/anime error, but I'm rewatching JoJo, and in part 1 vs Tarkus/Tarukus, William says when locked outside "hamon is a rapier not a sledgehammer, if it were brick I could pound it to (I think he said dust)" couldn't he, Poco or speedwagon point out the bricks around the door and break the door open via the bricks
Araki has explicitly stated that he's not... But then also has shared stories of times when he acts 100000% exactly like Rohan. So... Definitely a subconscious self insert.
You seem to use music from the Jojo anime a lot. Has this ever impacted your monetization or copyright strikes? I also want to use this music in the background, but I don’t know if It will lead to problems with copyright. Is it enough for me to just mention music name and who it belongs to in the description?
No, the only time I have ever gotten a claim from JoJo music is when I played the Pillar Man theme but that was with a video with no commentary. I don't believe naming it in the description matters I just do it so people know what the songs are.

Kinda weird you didn't bring this up because you used the song in every video.
Don't think he's a self insert, just a case of the favorite character of the author and that shows. Don't think there's a problem with this, but i wish there was more official spin off of other characters besides him. At least kira got one
I like the Small detail of using the ova intro song instead of the usual ost
Heaven's Door freaks me out. Imagine the power that allows someone to see everything about you and tamper with your body and soul!
If anything it just goes to show how good of a writer Araki is that his own self insert is not only loved by the community but also popular enough to get his own spin-off
Rohan is my favorite character. Drip Painting style and Hot Summer Martha are some of his best stories.
I think every creative person puts a bit of themselves in every character they come up with.
I don't think he's a self insert but he was made with the same process as how Stephen king has a few stories where the main character also happens to be a writer or how alot of them also live in maine
if Akira Toriyama can put himself as a robot in dragon ball, I don't see why Rohan can't be a self-insert especial when he has HEAVENZU DOOR
The story about mai is so sweet, as an autistic and trans girl can def relate to the idea of accepting that it isnt a disease, but just the true expression of oneself
Rohan is the perfect example of “write what you know”
I wouldn't want my self-insert to be exploded over and over again
I've heard about it for a long time, may check it out when I get on one of my manga kicks
@Hamon_Beat definitely check it out! The manga 's current arc is still ongoing also the anime is 🔥. They even got the OG va for kinnikuman himself in it.
In Sakamoto Days, there's a similar, possibly inspired by, character named Kannaguri
YOOO congrats 300.000 Subscibers!!! But a round number literally that,
Rohan says he completes 19 pages in 4 days by himself, Mr. Araki replied in column (around 1989 Part 3 J.Geil battle) that he spent 6 hours for designing, and 3 days for drawing with assistants(I think 4 or 5)
Rohan is not Mr. Araki's self-insert, and Mr. Araki replied that Rohan is his dream manga artist. but considering that many manga artists work all night, Mr. Araki's skill in completing a manga with a lot of drawing is insane
Rohan Kishibe=Ro.Ki.\ = Character = Shitty
> *Araki = A Ro.Ki* ||
Hirohiko Araki=A-ra-ki/ = Eternal youth = Nice hair
Rohan Kishibe is not Araki's self-insert, he's Araki's husbando
Before the video:
It'd be weird if Araki hated the main character of the current part, so probably not.
14:42 Also the explanation you give here kinda just sounds like the explanation for what a self insert is... or at least a type of self insert...
after visiting hawaii araki decides to make part 9 about money loving scum bags. what did he mean.
Rohan has crazy insane potential, but what I really like is when JoJo sometimes shows characters who seemingly have no potential and give them a almost perfect scenario where their ability can really extent far, sometimes even further than some of the more powerful characters out there.
Well if he is a self insert, I hope Araki has never looked into Rohan's english VA.
Especially the Irony of Rohan starting as a villain that uses his popularity as a public figure to take advantage of his fans.
Lmao Vic was innocent.
hamonbeta is an alt/ohio far right chud btw, he'd stan Vic the violater
Fun fact: Rohan hates josuke, but josuke is araki's favorite character
Hamon Beat, I have a question for your next "Debunking Araki forgot" videos
I don't remember if you've mentioned it but I'll need to rewatch your series too
It might be a translation/anime error, but I'm rewatching JoJo, and in part 1 vs Tarkus/Tarukus, William says when locked outside "hamon is a rapier not a sledgehammer, if it were brick I could pound it to (I think he said dust)" couldn't he, Poco or speedwagon point out the bricks around the door and break the door open via the bricks
Saying that R*han isn’t a self insert is like saying M*sta isn’t a damsel in distress
He is a dude in distress.
Mista does constantly get pailed out didn’t he?
Why did you censor their names like it's a slut
Do you intend to make a video about Prince's influence on Jojo?
Long story short, Rohan while bot a self insert, is meant to be kind of like one, and almost a parody of araki himself
Thank you
Generally it’s safe to assume that any time a mangaka writes a character who is a mangaka that it will be a self insert.
I relate to rohan, Cus I always research my favorite artist.
Araki has explicitly stated that he's not...
But then also has shared stories of times when he acts 100000% exactly like Rohan.
So... Definitely a subconscious self insert.
Character has anything in common with the author:
"Is this a self insert?"
why did araki forget about Lenny Zeppeli?
Araki forgot to pay my bills.
ROHANNNN
Rohan is actually my second favorite Jojo character. My first is William Zeppeli.
Hot summer martha is so good❤
Kishibe Rohan is my favorite JoJo character
I wonder how Rohan's manga pink dark boy Story plot its like?, its probably a bizarre manga plot
"Is Rohan Araki's Self-Insert?" is like asking "Is Ian Malcolm Michael Crichton's Self-Insert?"
Why did hamon beat forget about leonardo zeppeli?
You seem to use music from the Jojo anime a lot. Has this ever impacted your monetization or copyright strikes? I also want to use this music in the background, but I don’t know if It will lead to problems with copyright.
Is it enough for me to just mention music name and who it belongs to in the description?
No, the only time I have ever gotten a claim from JoJo music is when I played the Pillar Man theme but that was with a video with no commentary.
I don't believe naming it in the description matters I just do it so people know what the songs are.
I KNEW ROHAN WAS ARAKI ALL ALONG!
