  • The legacy of the Soviet Union in Mongolia stretches from the bustling streets of the capital to the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert. From fighter-interceptor bases to entire armies numbering in the tens of thousands, Mongolia was responsible for preventing any catastrophic clashes between Beijing and Moscow.
    But what remains today?

Passed through Mongolia a few years back on a Moscow/Beijing train journey. Didn't stop there, but what impressed me most about Ulaanbaatar were the yurts on the slopes of the hills surrounding the city. It felt very evocative - the old life and the new, two aspects of Mongolia in one place!

Nah, it happened because Mao was an absolute nutter. Khreschev, like other leaders of his generation, was a committed communist, but he was also interested in stability. The Soviets and Western leaders had serious differences and constantly sought to undermine each other, but they played by certain rules and remained within certain boundaries. It doesn't hurt that the Chinese were unhappy with being the junior partner in the former alliance. They didn't care that much about ideology, but they did care about being so much weaker and so reliant on the Soviets.

Is the damage just from neglect / scavenging or were they deliberately damaged?
If they had been converted for civilian use that could have been a whole new town!

Demolition, combined with scavenging. There are huge trenches where people have come to dig up the pipes, communication cables etc

i guess what i've learned from the dissolution of the USSR is that transitioning away from a Socialist mode of production to a Capitalist mode of production means to transition from gradual construction to rapid decay

Not really. Czechia, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary are examples where things are way way better than before. This video showcased hollowing out of Soviet military infrastructure, hardly a signal of how the overall country is doing (given Mongolia lacks the need or capability to field a force capable of making use of such military facilities.
Mongolia is doing much better than the Soviet days today.

@@chinguunerdenebadrakh7022 The countries you mentioned lost more population after 1991 then they did in ww2(before that they were growing), in some cases up to a third of population. I don't think the end justifies the means. Sadly this is never pointed anywhere

@@Admin-gm3lc In 1990, Poland had 38 million, Czechia had 10.3 million, Slovakia had 5.2 million, Lithuania 3.7 mil, Latvia 2.6, Slovenia 2 mil, Estonia 1.5.
      In 2023, Poland 37.8, Czechia 10.8, Slovakia had 5.4, Lithuania 2.9, Latvia 1.9 mil, Slovenia 2.1 mil, Estonia 1.37.
The only ones to have experienced a serious population decline are Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. Estonia doesn't really apply here because they had 963k Estonians in 1989, this was 920k in 2021, not really that drastic change. But there were 475k Russians in 1989 to 315k in 2021. 48k Ukrainians to 28k. This was emigration of foreign ethnic groups to their respective countries when the USSR fell apart.
Lithuania and Latvia are the only to have received serious depopulation even accounting for Russian/Ukrainian/Belarusian emigration. And I don't think even they are raring to go back to the USSR.
