- The 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B was one of the most iconic cars ever manufactured. Many of us will never be able to afford that car, but we can swap a WRB 1998 with a turbo EJ and have something that’s pretty damn close! This is the POOR MAN’S 22B!
This video is part of a "Build Series" (see "Playlists" tab for all videos) for my 1998 Rally Blue Pearl RSTi Coupe (Impreza 2.5RS swapped with a EJ205 turbo engine), which is 1 of only 720 sold in the USDM for 1998. This RSTi Build has come a long way and includes a full archive of videos documenting how to: (1) Pull a EJ-series turbo engine, (2) Replace the head gaskets, (3) Add key upgrades to increase long-term reliability, and (4) Restore the interior to OEM specifications.

Folk don't expect my Subaru wagon to be anything other than a family run-around. It's a WRX STI that I imported from Japan, had all the type-approval stuff done, got it registered and on the road. It's an EJ20, MY98; 296 BHP, stock exhaust and cats, all standard, quick shift and steering, never 'fiddled with', no stickers or enhancements. Quiet as a family saloon in traffic, goes 'whoosh' and surprises a lot of people when I clog it. Not luxury by any means, but without doubt the best drivers car I've ever had.

I thought you had upgraded the factory intake plastic "pipe" that goes to the turbo. You can put it on your to do list, as well as the front lower H brace - best mod on a GC handling wise.
You should check Buck Laseck's build for some interesting solutions.

I actually got interested in the older RS models because of this channel and decided to do a swap as well, with the Ej257 instead of the 205.

Awesome man. So cool to hear! I loved this body style from day one and I still think it’s pretty much the one of the best looking Japanese cars...ever. They just nailed it with this model. Kind of like the Porsche 911 model’s design. Porsche just decided to stick with their design for longer - interesting difference in long-term strategy between the two companies.
Welcome back! Just FYI my 03 WRX has the same fuel filter you have in your car. Not sure if Subaru switched to in-tank in 04 but definitely not on my 03. Hope to see more vids!

I have a 2004 WRX that i am using as a donor for a 1995 impreza 2 door. It has that same fuel filter so i guess yours might be from the 2004. Great videos, keep it up, it inspired me to try this crazy swap myself with no real previous experience. Again, nice videos and great work.

@@SubaruONLY I actually did a JDM STI Transmission Swap and a JDM ej206 that I converted to a single stock TB04 turbo. I also upgraded to the 4 pot calipers and stainless steel lines all around. Also have a AEM fuel pump and filter upgrade as well as various suspension components with a bunch of extra bits. The car has 216k on it so I'm pretty much replacing everything

Glad to hear you are better. A nice 98 for sure! There are a couple of 98 unicorns around here, an emerald green and a brilliant red that I see once in awhile.
I really love the stock gold 16s but the 04 STI wheels are nice too.
Is that a stock up pipe with the precat? If it is, I recommend the STI or the BC legacy turbo.
Also, if that is the td04-13t take a look at the Saab 19t upgrade. Kinagawa (sp?) sells a compressor wheel and housing kit.

Had an 02 and an 03 both had that same filter . There is a kit to 22b any 02-07 WRX/STI , looks like some work but it's out there !

you can use the stock wrx power steering resevoir mount. Drill the spot welds out on the wrx bracket, and weld into the rs. Also the paint color is RPB (rally blue pearl) not world rally blue. looks nice

Unless they changed since the car was new the KYB AGX were 4 way front adjustable on top and 8 way rears adjustable on the side of the bottom. They worked great for GS many moons ago ;)
Enjoy the build, will keep an eye out, NorCal as well but privilege of owning a home out of state and only storing the car in state, no BAR for me :D

@@SubaruONLY at the moment she could pass, original swap was started by me then reality pulled me out of Cali and M45 finished the swap then shipped her to me. That said she's back to being housed in Cali but with the beauty of a residence outside the state (not a game style PO box).

Used what I had. 6 speed is a must and will happen at some point. Might go ej207 V7/8...someday. Or go closed-deck - all in time. 😁

No, I don’t think so. I just removed it because I didn’t need it, looks cleaner without it, and it’s make working on the engine easier.
My 04 wrx had the fuel filter in the engine bay, just like yours. Its easier to change the filter in this location.

Why does you ride need to pass bar inspection? Is it because you changed the motor? I always wondered why who would know it had a different motor?
Yep, in CA, when you swap the motor, you have to do this inspection. Engine must be from newer vehicle too I believe.

meaning have to go pay a visit to the REF. how did your car get like that. I have a 06 wrx sti and Went to do the smog and they said its REF and turned me away ca.

Looks good Luke! Few things I noticed. Up pipe is what the turbo is bolted to. I never liked kyb on my 02 wagon as they kept bottoming out. Drilled rotors may eventually crack. But the project is coming along nicely.

Yes. It’s now just two codes. One for the fuel tank sensor that I don’t have due to ‘98 chassis and one from the pcv - shouldn’t be too bad to deal with.

just looks like the 22B as is… not made to look, lol same body, same color, same turbo power, same interior, same susp, same brakes, same radio, lol…. don’t need to “make” it look like a 22B - Cheers!!!
Jus bought my first Subaru wrx (2002) and I’m 90% sure I got a burnt valve. I knew it had vacuum leaks so i didn’t think much of the valves. Fixed all the leaks and runs better but I think I got a bigger problem now 😒
Can you do a leak down or compression test? That would help confirm it (leak down really to pinpoint it). Been there. Good luck buddy!

I have an 03 wrx and whenever I floor it It kind of bogs and picks up speed real slow any ideas what could cause this problem.
Maf sensor, fuel filter, spark plugs, coil packs, injectors, o2 sensor could cause those symptoms.

Nice Build, definitely keep the fuel filter, the sock in-tank in only for the very large particles. according to Injector dynamics Bosch recommends a 5 micron filter, and particles larger than 35 micron can damage injectors, interesting info:

injectors need fine particle filtering and sock filter alone will clog your injectors and maybe cause damage
