Great Review mate. The crappy touchpad is a deal breaker. I don't know why they don't just remove the red nipple, I literally have had a few ThinkPads and have never ever used it, when I've tried to use it it's just annoying and useless compared to using the trackpad. They should have an option where you can add this nipple as an option if you really really have to have it, for those diehard users. I guarantee you that 95% of people with a thingpad never ever use this nipple
Some people, like myself, would never buy another Thinkpad without a trackpoint. I'm OK with it being an option. But if it was removed completely then it would be a deal breaker. There are a surprising number of people like myself so Lenovo would lose a lot of sales.
@@tnetroP yeah I get it some people like it. But I bet if u calculate them all up it's prob less than 5% of people who have a Thinkpad who actually use the nipple. They should def do some models where it's an option to have it with the buttons or just have a larger trackpad
Thanks for the review Josh! Quick question, when testing battery life is it accurate to assume all batteries discharge the same? That is, isn’t it true that batteries can “speed up” discharge as they get closer to 0% and this can vary by battery type and manufacturer? So a battery that discharges more at first might end up lasting longer as it holds charge better at low percentages? Just curious on your thoughts and thanks again for the great reviews!
I hate comments like this, but Josh is probably the best laptop reviewer on youtube, at least in my book. Keep doing what you do josh, I think you're on to something.
An ultraportable where you have to keep it on a desk and use an external mouse to enjoy it kinda defeats the purpose. I was actually excited when I saw this product at first precisely because the trackpad was haptic and it had Ryzen 6000 so I was hoping it could be like my MacBook Air M1 but run Linux instead. I'm very disappointed to find out that it is severely overpriced and that the main feature that attracted me (the trackpad) is actually one of its biggest downsides. Thanks for the honest review and saving people a lot of money buying this.
You should try it first. I bought this laptop and I absolutely love it. The trackpad isn't an issue at all. I think the trackpad issue is a very subjective thing. Josh didn't like it but there's other reviewers that say it's the best trackpad on a PC laptop right now. I personally haven't tried all PC laptops so I can't tell but I really love the trackpad on this one. Keyboard is also the best of any thin and light I think. I have a desktop at home so I mainly use my laptop outside of my home and the portability and battery life are excellent. I was looking for something small, light with a good keyboard and trackpad and this thing really does it for me.
I wanted to buy the 16 inch version, but just like the XPS, it only has 1080p and 4k options. 4k is an overkill and 1080p in my opinion does not belong on a laptop with this price. Otherwise looks like a good overall laptop
Same. Sucks cause theres really no other laptop to buy except the Z16 and XPS that tick my boxes. But both downsides are the non QHD display options. Ofc I'd like high refresh rate too but if a laptop does everything else, I can skip it. Correct resolution is not a thing I can skip out on Maybe I will just keep coping to find the perfect laptop, at least I dont need one asap, can wait till next year

Should i go for this laptop or MacBook air m2? I'm a fan of MacBook's trackpad. Good trackpad is really important for me. Currently this laptop oled 16gb 500gb is £1000 which is cheaper.
Dear Josh I really appreciate your efforts and you are my favorite laptop reviewer. However your suggestion for Lenono 'leaving the track poin't' for a ThinkPad aficionado is an absolute 'No Go'. ThinkPad sales still thrive partly due to the following oddities: Track point and Fn & Ctrl button's position. Btw why don't you propose Apple to change the Command key and Fn key layout? They are as i'inproper' as the one of ThinkPads
Thank you for the comments. It is certainly subjective. Look here's my opinion with Mac keyboard layout. I don't think its as bad being different as for ThinkPads. Mac uses a different operating system that is designed for that layout. With the ThinkPad layout ... the vast majority of Windows keyboards have a certain layout for that operating system. It is hard to adjust to ThinkPads coming from another Windows PC keyboard.
@@JustJoshTech Dear Josh first of all thank you for spending some of your valuable time in order to evaluate my comment; it’s obvious that we disagree! Please allow me to elaborate in more detail my point of view: Urging Lenovo to “leave the trackpoint” could lead to a marginal enlargement of the trackpad’s surface so as to facilitate to a larger extent the needs of the users that solely use the trackpad˙ it will be a marginal gain for them. However, that will detriment the workflow of thousands of ThinkPad users that are totally accustomed to using the trackpoint. I am one of these users and no matter how much you may disagree, I find the trackpoint to be more useful and more precise than the trackpad. I know I could be characterized as a “dog that can’t be taught new tricks” but this is the case for me and thousands of more of "ThinkPad aficionados". Despite our disagreement, I would like to congratulate you on your hard, exquisite and enlightening work: Your mum has every reason to be proud of you.
The only down side to Dell laptops is the parts are hard to source that's why I don't buy them. I have a Toshiba satellite laptop from November the 9,2009. And I don't have no problem up until now with it I only changed the hard drive to TB and the ram to 4. So you can do the math how many years I have it for. I am an accountant plus graphic designer so it's how you take care of a device makes it last longer. I only do video editing and no issues so now am wondering which laptop to buy to meet back to my Toshiba.
brilliant as always, can I ask, what is your daily driver ? or do you have a few depending on what you are doing, love to know, if you don't mind, thank you.
Could you look at Lenovo ThinkBook 13s with Ryzen 6000 chips? I'd ask for the ThinkBook 14 as it has a much better port selection, but Lenovo only 'upgraded' it to the 5625u and 5825u.
@@Alexandre-xz6jm I just bought a used Lenovo Thinkbook 15 g3 acl 21a4 (Ryzen 5 5500u, 256gb m2 ssd, 8gb DDR4-3200 RAM... 4gb soldered unfortunately, best option I could find is the G.Skill Ripjaws F4-3200C22S-32GRS 1x32gb and I would have to accept dual channel only for the first 8gb? Got it on ebay for 350 usd, what are its issues? I saw that it only uses an internal battery so that would mean opening it up for replacement. What other issues does it have? I thought about even selling it and upgrade, but I don't know what the next step up is. I guess if I bought a better laptop it would need to have 16gb ram included and probably dedicated graphics card. I don't necessarily need a better cpu, but processing power and RAM is a higher prioritization for me because of my needs. Needs are working with plc programming with Siemens TIA Portal application and I think that app primarily needs a lot of ram. MAYBE it would be nice to have a dedicated graphics card to be able to play but I already have a ps5 and not even playing that much so I guess that's less of a priority compared to the laptop just needing to be fast
Isn't the trackpad supposed to be close to the MacBook's? I thought it incorporated haptic feedback since it is (supposed to be and feel like) Force Touch or is that just plain wrong? Asking since at least one other reviewer pointed out that the trackpad almost felt as good as the MacBook's.
I own this laptop and it's the best trackpad I've used that isn't on a macbook. The issues that Josh pointed aren't invalid, they're just really subjective imo.
I do not agree on the advice buying the lower core 6650U instead of 6850U or 6860Z. In Notebookchekcs testing the latter were 50% faster! Noise level was aximum 41 dBA and temperatures were mostly below 50 °C. This are allright values even though with the 6650 the values were lower.
Hi Josh. Your last brush with a Surface machine seems to go back to the disaster that was Surface Laptop 3. But guess a Surface Laptop reference in the screen size chart here at 1:36 would be useful because of its 3:2 aspect ratio.

Im really torn on Lenovo's laptops. Because I want BOTH an OLED display + good battery life but Lenovo always cuts corners on battery capacity for some odd reason. Meanwhile, Asus ZenBook 14 offers the exact same OLED with 75Wh battery starting at only $649.
I agree with the OLED, but I can’t live with 8GB of ram. Also do you have any idea if ASUS uses the same type of digitizer causing a screen door effect as Lenovo?

I disagree about the trackpad thing ... in my opinion they should BRING BACK the physical buttons to supplement the track point ... The ONLY reason to buy a Think branded laptop is the iconic keyboard / Trackpoint. Most users would disable the touchpad entirely. I couldn't use that track point without the physical buttons, it would drive me nuts. Shame because otherwise this laptop looks good.
the new flat physical buttons suck too, I'm gonna give this one a try, probably regret it. I wonder if you can turn the trackPad off on the Z13 so only the button area responds?
@@cryptoctupus5680 I highly recommend you wait if you want a new ThinkPad. Hmm, those prices don’t seem right-I’m guessing that this was in between those constant sales they have. It would be good if they had more clarity in pricing generally though, instead of relying on these gimmicks all the time
To your point about chasse and cooling - A comparison between T14s G3 and Z13 would be useful - Apparently the T14s runs the Ryzen 7 faster and cooler. Even the top spec'd screen on T14s is still several hundred cheaper than the Z13 - so I reckon it's all 'millennial' hype and vegan leather...
These 2 USB-C laptops are awful, because it means you have one port left if you're charging. Just because Apple and Dell do it doesn't mean that it's acceptable (see: Asus, LG).
This is an ultrabook, so the priority is using it on battery. I rarely use my MB Pro 13 M1 tied to a power outlet. I get 16-18 hours S0T, so easily get through a day and charge at night.
Been a while since you asked, but for anyone coming here with the same question: It is locked down initially but you can unlock easily it by changing just one setting in the BIOS.

@@Alexandre-xz6jm Not the same. T series isn't worth as much compared to the Carbon.
@@DigitalSamTV Maybe have a look at every other laptop that Lenovo sells. O ly the ThinkPad range has it.
no, i like te thinkpad range as its highger spec, more durable etc. the nipple isnt a deal breaker but the touchpad should def be improved. @@tnetroP
Please make a video about the Best $500 - $1 000 laptops of 2022
I hate comments like this, but Josh is probably the best laptop reviewer on youtube, at least in my book.
Correct resolution is not a thing I can skip out on
Maybe I will just keep coping to find the perfect laptop, at least I dont need one asap, can wait till next year
Seems like the OEM's don't care about 1440p.
And I genuinely want to know why.
@@israellewis5484 It's funny cause they love to put 2.8k screen on 14 inch laptops with high refresh rate but then they don't put similar panels or QHD on 15+ inch laptops
Edit: Just as I wrote that I found a Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED that has a 2.8k 120hz OLED panel.....but it's 16:9
And to be frank, I don't like the Vivobooks layouts, throw the damn numpad away

How would you compare it to the Nano x1? I love my Nano Gen 1.
Would love to see a review on the dell 9315
Glad to have such a great portable option for those of us who will only use a laptop with the red trackpoint.
Hey. Nice to see Above and Beyond in that video :-)
Should i go for this laptop or MacBook air m2? I'm a fan of MacBook's trackpad. Good trackpad is really important for me. Currently this laptop oled 16gb 500gb is £1000 which is cheaper.
Thank you for great on point review😊
How about memory, ssd, wifi chip, and battery repairability?
Nowadays it can be found for under 1400US with the cooler r5. How does that change things you think?
"...but the apple/mac is better..."
pretty much every review he does ends with this phrase you can almost bet money on it
The only down side to Dell laptops is the parts are hard to source that's why I don't buy them.
Hi just been told won a prize can you confirm this is ok and real please
10:40 "I am so glad this review was over" you should have started with that.
As a hardcore Linux user I'm starting to consider Apple with these prices.
Could you look at Lenovo ThinkBook 13s with Ryzen 6000 chips? I'd ask for the ThinkBook 14 as it has a much better port selection, but Lenovo only 'upgraded' it to the 5625u and 5825u.
ThinkBook as a lot of issues, avoid it.
Got my X1 carbon 7 for nearly half the price in 2020. WTF has happened to pricing of thinkpads?
covid happened, they're obviously having trouble obtaining parts. Which is why even the T14s series comes with a horrible display
@@theburgundynetwork3432 Ah, thank you for sharing.
Hi Josh,
Can you link the thinkpad wallpaper?
I do not agree on the advice buying the lower core 6650U instead of 6850U or 6860Z. In Notebookchekcs testing the latter were 50% faster! Noise level was aximum 41 dBA and temperatures were mostly below 50 °C. This are allright values even though with the 6650 the values were lower.
The MacBook Air looks sexier? Surely not. larger bezels, fugly as hell notch.
Did you have hardware acceleration enabled in Chrome on the ThinkPad?
Hi Josh. Your last brush with a Surface machine seems to go back to the disaster that was Surface Laptop 3. But guess a Surface Laptop reference in the screen size chart here at 1:36 would be useful because of its 3:2 aspect ratio.
hey.. were you able to get hands-on with Fujitsu's UH-X series? where i'm based, all i get is Intel models (11th and 12th gen i5/ i7) and i'm still on fence if i should get AMD ones from other OEMs or grab Fujitsu.

@@tanker242 There are 16GB models of UX3402, UM3402, and UM5302 (Intel 12th Gen, Ryzen 5000, Ryzen 6000). Here in the US it's available at Costco for $1200.
Don't know about the digitizer thing but I don't think that's same thing as IPS screen-door-effect. Also it only exists on OLED panels with optional touchscreen, so Asus ZenBooks are not affected.
Would you please make a review for Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Laptop | 14" 2.8K OLED Display| AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS | 16GB RAM | 1TB SSD | NVIDIA GeForce MX450 (2GB) | Windows 11 Home | for 1400euro
I don’t know… the fact you can get a 14 inch and 13 inch laptop or 2 in 1 with a 2.8k OLED for less than half the price…. I’m willing to take a hit in build quality assuming nothing breaks in the first 4 years of use.
The MacBook also can run Linux although it is a bit unstable right now.

I'm on the market for a new laptop. I really want to try AMD go the first time. I currently own a Dell XPS 9380. I was tempted yo buy this one but lacks of ports make me wondering if T14S would be a better choice. Alternatives? TIA in advance
thinkPad x13 AMD is a good alternative, avoid the privacy screen option tho
CES2022 is just about to take place, the X1 Carbon Gen 11 is gonna be a nice upgrade from the current Gen 10, and it has a more traditional track point and track point buttons as well. From what I hear, they'll be available for sale in March/April. Skip the Z13, not worth it.
@@AlTheEngineer Too late, bought the Z13 for $1160 so if I hate the lack of trackPoint buttons I'll most likely get my money back if I sell quickly. I'll probably be going with the X13 if I don't like the Z13, 13.3 is my favourite screen size atm.

Absurdly expensive, an X13/T14 G3 AMD is good enough.
Right now, this is selling at 1.75k, quite the bargain, and with max specs.
Hmm, those prices don’t seem right-I’m guessing that this was in between those constant sales they have. It would be good if they had more clarity in pricing generally though, instead of relying on these gimmicks all the time
Hey! the screen is 120hz?
To your point about chasse and cooling - A comparison between T14s G3 and Z13 would be useful - Apparently the T14s runs the Ryzen 7 faster and cooler. Even the top spec'd screen on T14s is still several hundred cheaper than the Z13 - so I reckon it's all 'millennial' hype and vegan leather...
please do the z16
This or the nano?
These 2 USB-C laptops are awful, because it means you have one port left if you're charging. Just because Apple and Dell do it doesn't mean that it's acceptable (see: Asus, LG).
This is an ultrabook, so the priority is using it on battery. I rarely use my MB Pro 13 M1 tied to a power outlet. I get 16-18 hours S0T, so easily get through a day and charge at night.
@@andyH_England Sure, if you want to run the battery down for no reason.
Josh, can I ask if the chip (the pro chip) here is locked so that it can only install windows, and cannot install any Linux?
Been a while since you asked, but for anyone coming here with the same question: It is locked down initially but you can unlock easily it by changing just one setting in the BIOS.
