If you want to check grade at the cutting edge as you dig open your bucket until the cutting edge, bucket hinge pin and laser receiver are roughly in la line strait up and down. Take a paint marker and put a line across a bucket ear and the stick at the hinge pin then always dig with the mark lined up and you will be on grade. Good videos keep them coming :)
You always want to come down from the top when setting your receiver, it loses some of its accuracy if you go to far down and fine tune it back up. Good demonstration though, especially for using one hand lol
does the receiver move on you at all ? i have used the same set up on a 12 tone machine trimming pads and the machine receiver moves so much , the magnets didnt seem strong enough i found.
I'm new in hardscaping world and very eager to learn. Love watching your different videos. I am confused though. Say you need to excavate 10 inches for example with a pitch of 2 inches. Wouldn't one side be 10 inches and the other be 12? If it was 10 and 10 you would have no pitch. Or does the pitch come after the base? I've taken a icpi class and have basic concepts down but this always confuses me. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
chris warner before you add your 21A or prefered base matierial you set pitch by excavating the area. never set pitch by adding or subtracting base material.
Man, it kinda sucks doing that alone if the distance is little longer. It helps if you put the machine reciver on first becouse you can see the lights and after wards change to the actual laser receiver ( not magnetic) to get it just on the mark.
I saw one of there when the dug my basement addition a few years ago they had a Gide attachment to there JD 160lc/ side note he said that the ground here is so hard you could put a 10 sorry building no prob since we had 100% pure hard packed clay almost as soon as you start digging
Great Video, I have a Topcon laser but its just does grade not set up for fall/pitch but if I ever get my hands on one I will now know how to do it, Thanks
Hey good vid as always, please could you do one on how to get the last scoop of dirt into the bucket when theres nothing to push against if you get me , thanks :)
Watching these videos inspired me to start my business over a year ago. I build my patios just like Tom, my business has exploded. Lol, thanks Tom.

We did. Did all the walls and front walk about 10 years ago
Thanks! Yes it is very nice and saves a good amount of time
Nice tip and thank you for the compliment on the videos.
Dirt Ninja I would like to buy a laser for my machine with the magnet for the equipment
Where can I buy one ?

I use a Bullseye 6 receiver that allows me to stay on grade 15 degrees either side of plumb. It works very well.
Very cool, I was wondering how it worked on the machine, slick setup.

Why is it, no matter how you set up the tripod, the reciever ALWAYS bloody ends up on a joint on the staff!!!

No, the ground as to rocky and hard.
Maybe Topcon will send you new RL-H4C to do a review on.
I think it was around $1500 but we have had it for a while so I cant really remember
Love your videos. Great tips.
Hi.another excellent video.Thank you.
i seen you guys to day in Methuen what you doing down here
assuming placement of the laser is critical for slope. any tips?
is a loader would have done this job (excavating 18 inches)?
Btw how much does one of these cost? For the whole setup
Did you do a job there before
What aggregates did you place?thickness too would nice to know.

That's what labourers are for, or you could get out and pick up a shovel.......... but it's much nicer in the cab! Lol
have you ever noticed that when you go back after angling, right next to the laser is slightly off grade?
That’s because the whole plane is moving. And if the laser isn’t shot at the axis it’s going to move everywhere
A small granite and paver job
Haha that would be nice!
Need any workers?. I could learn a lot just working a summer with you ,, let me no!!!
The sniveling was unbearable.
But you watched it anyway lol. Gotta get that information somehow
please stop sniffing.
