My favourite trick for any wash, shade or speed/contrast paint is a drop or two of Tamiya x-22…breaks the surface tension and make its flow beautifully…it also isnt too bad to toss a drop or two in each normal paint container and watch how smooth it becomes
personally the new Nuln Oil is absolute trash. A good sub i found Is Pro Actryle Black wash mixed 50/50 with Oblivian Black wash from two thin coats. Another good solution is Newsh from Pro Acryle is like oil paint medium but for acrylics non oil paint, just put the paint then you rub it off with a cloth or makeup and has the same look as oil wash.
@@bulldozer360 the finish on the pro acryle black wash is a little bit more of a satin finish, while old school nuln oil was matt. that is was i mix 50 50 with two thin black wash since that one is extremly matt
I quit Nuln Oil when Nuln Oil production was stopped in 2022. Since then i have bought and tested every Acrylic shade/Ink i could find and compared to my OG Nuln Oil and i have finally found an almost 1:1 replacement. Unfortunately it is made by the thieves at GreenStuffWorld. It's their Wash Ink Atramentum Black. Oils are still nicer, but if you only want Acrylic... now you know which one to buy.
I have Agrax for Orks and Death Guard, BUT with my Necron color scheme covering the model with Nuln Oil as the next step after priming the models with Admech Grey it makes a really cool dark grey that makes them look just like the Necrons in Dawn of War so I am glad to be able to use up the new Nuln Oil then I can allocate what to use with the classic formula as this new formula is not good for my other models but is PERFECT for my Necrons. I get what you mean as I may need to take a look at a few of my other stuff.
I used oil for panel lining, but I also like to gloss varnish and then pin wash (or just slap on) Nuln Oil Gloss. Great capillary action. If anyone can suggest an acrylic gloss that's similar to Nuln Oil Gloss (now that it's been discontinued) I'd be grateful. I've tried adding gloss mediums to regular black washes but it desaturates the wash and has a poor effect, in my experience. Cheers!
Newsh!! i started with oil wash deductive painting. but newsh is so much easier cause i can just do it at my desk in my room without the fumes from oil washing. Also i really like using a flow improver into any other brands wash to get a nice thin wash and not need to re apply base coat over it.
Nice video, love your stuff🙂 Use Enamel wash or enamel based panel liner, the same handling as oils, shorter drying time. They are already thinned, no need to thin them by yourself, more conviniet and faster as oils. Depends on the quality of the oil paint, they need days to dry completly. You can use the hairdryer to get rid of the solvents, but as soon you go back with some thinner they can reactivated when the paint itself is not completly dried. Hope to see more of your good stuff🙂
That's because oil paints don't _dry_ - they _cure_ . The oils (such as linseed, walnut) react with oxygen to harden into a resin. The reaction from the oil oxidizing is fairly exothermic (generates heat), and can cause spontaneous combustion if you've got rags or paper towels soaked in the paint/oil. We had old 1950's-1960's _film_ projector reels that we played in elementary school (I went to school in the 1980's, before VCR's had much media) that warned about storage for rags soaked in "oil" as they are a danger for spontaneous combustion. You were supposed to store the rags it in an airtight metal tin on concrete, away from anything flammable. It wasn't until... a few months ago when I started learning about oil paints that I learned the reason was for _oxidizing oils_ like linseed and walnut oils, which are used for oil paints, and wood finishes. My whole life I'd been similarly careful for things that include motor oil which isn't susceptible.
Never liked Nuln Oil, it never created the depth and definition it was supposed to when panel lining Lately I've been using Micron Pen for that It's cheaper, easier and creates some nice, dark shadows
I haven't tried this yet, in 30 years of painting, I find I get enough shading using speed paints like a wash and either edge highlighting and/or dry brushing. Interesting idea though.
I hate to say it, but the ventilation issues and using mineral spirits is pretty much a no-go for a house with small children. If I can't lick the brush safely, I'm certainly not keeping it around my kids.
The new formula they made for Nuln Oil is nothing like it was before. They never should have changed it. Fortunately I can use the new stuff for all my Necron models to get a nice dark grey and save the old stuff for other models. Please get a paint holder so it does not spill ^_^
wtf is mineral spirits? people keep repeating it but google translate doesnt help me, neither does wikipedia no where would i go to find such a thing. Also what if you use inks insteads for recesses?
I hear you cause it’s the same for me, in Italian is similar to acqua ragia but still that’s not it 100%. Your best bet is to go to an art store and ask for the 2 mediums used in oil paints
I never understood the obsession with Nuln Oil as liquid talent in the hobby universe. I get it in the beginning, but I try to encourage everyone to try something new and/or a new way for their thought process. Thank you for the videos, I've been binge watching a lot of them :D Will you activate the TH-cam Member area or are you sticking to Patreon?
"This alternative will solve every problem" While pointing at an energy drink.🤨You're going to mix that vile florescent yellow-green and contrast with it? Let's begin!
Whole Citadel range now is 🗑️ they just stayed in 90s , no improvement whatsoever . AK gen3 , Warpaints Fanatic and Two Tin Coats are milion miles ahead. Still have about 50 citadel paints for sale since I've switched to TTC and hard to find anyone who gonna buy them even for 1.50 £ each ... 😢
If you use very matte paint, I highly suggest gloss varnishing it, because the matte paint WILL lock in some of the oil paint and you won't get it out! (and then matte varnishing it again if you don't want the gloss look)
One of my tricks to consider this is paint a slight brighter color knowing it will bring it down. Next Level painting said bring it up to 11 to bring it back down to 10.
@@blakesmith3477 sure , that works to a degree but it will still look "dirty" and splotchy, but that may be an effect you're going for of course. It's too inconsistent to my tastes and then I could just as well use normal washes.
Only thing we SHOULD do is unsubscribe from videos like this. If someone like Nuln Oil he SHOULD use it, if someone dont like he SHOULD not use it, and if someone dont know - he/she needs tutorial on how to use it and pros/cons, and then decide how Nuln fits in their painting skills. „Tips” like this are pointless.
Absolutely if you know how to use it and you’re using it on colors that take it well you can get beautiful results. But at the end of the day you do you

You typed X-22 (which is Clear Gloss) or did you really mean X-20A (Acrylic Thinner)?
@@ElmoMellonhead Roger that…my laziness to actually look at the bottle has repaid me lol. Thank you for your correction sir
I'll be trying that tonight. Thanks for the tip.

Exactly. They ruined the formula for Nuln Oil.
Would pro acryl black wash work straight out the bottle?

Awesome video. Still new to the hobby, but picked up the tamiya panel liner to use that instead of a dark wash and experiment from there.
I use it for metallics only

Same vibes
In my opinion you’re not meant to use Nuln oil or any shade paints neat. Mix lahmian medium into it 50:50 and it works beautifully 👌🏻👌🏻
