  • @sofiemorena7781
    @sofiemorena7781 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1029

    I think why Trixie scratched her stomach and back is because it usually itches a bit when taking off a corset. Like when taking off any tight garment that leaves marks in the skin from restricted blood circulation in the skin! But I guess scratching oneself at home is off limits since there is apparently a pandemic of peeping men in the walls 🤷‍♀

    The whole bit about people taking pictures and selling them to newspapers or magazines definitely happened. (20:22) That's how Marilyn Monroe's image as a "sex symbol" came about. While Monroe originally consented to have some nude pictures taken by a photographer to pay some bills she had, those same photos were then resold by a media company to none other then Hugh Hefner the founder of Playboy magazine. Without her consent or compensation, Hefner used Marilyn's photos as the first issue of his magazine. When the news broke to Monroe that her photos were released, Fox, and other film executives wanted Marilyn to deny them. But instead admitted to the public it was her. & she became more famous and beloved. Later on she even said to a biographer, "I never even received a thank-you from all those who made millions off a nude Marilyn photograph." So yeah unfortunately people definitely took advantage and exploited people in this manner. Thankfully there are laws to protect people from this but it's still a major issue today. Sorry for this historical spiel thought I should share 😅

    The 1980’s were all about female empowerment, that we could be strong, powerful, and sexy, so naturally adverts played on that. We were only a decade past the ERA, women’s rights were still on the forefront.
    Lynda Carter was the original Wonder Woman, one of the very, very few strong female characters those of us who were young girls in the 70’s had to look up to. She was everything to so many of us and is still absolutely stunning and fierce to this day.

    I'm 65. This contained so many sweet memories, of both the products and the commercials! Sometimes I'll actually watch a round-up of 80s commercials because they make me feel nostalgic. My commentary as someone who remembers the 80s commercials and products:
    1) Jean Nate was a body splash and smelled more citrusy than sweet; 2) I LOVED L'erin lipstick and the rest of the line, which was available in special kiosks in retail grocery and drug stores; 3) Jazz flute music was perceived as classy and sophisticated, which, along with the literary references, was the vibe Max Factor wanted to associate with their eye shadow; 4) The Maybelline lipstick commercial with Lynda Carter was flirtatious, but not creepy; 5) The slim lipstick was streamlined, like the racy car. I thought it was clever. (Oh, and Sea Breeze never had me fooled. I wanted salicylic acid in my astringent to remove some dead skin cells and increase the turnover rate; the silly menthol in Sea Breeze was just an effect that felt nice, but didn't really do anything special.)

    I feel like no one's touching on the fact that this hasn't really changed in current advertising. The sexism is still there and strong in advertisement, it's just gone about in a much more subtle way. It's still for the majority pretty girl+product+fancy item formula

    • @mom23js
      @mom23js 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it has changed.
      Women then : buy this to seduce any man.
      Women now: buy this and feel like the woman you are.
      Men then: buy this to be the manliest man.
      Men now: buy this and be the most attractive man.
      It's almost reversed. And no, there isn't much in identity inclusivity, but if we are going based off of the base "2 genders" thing.. alot has actually changed.

      It's simply business strategy, they are models or acters who can do the work what really advertisation is for, to give information about products and to capture people attention and influence them to buy it. Pretty faces are plus because people like pretty things. Isn't it?

    I love how disturbed James is by this whole situation ( 23:19 ).
    Sadly I still know way to many women who are scared to be "unaesthetically" at home.
    Or another example is "your underwear must be a matching set or at least always perfectly color coordinated".
    My stepmom recently told me, that's what her mom taught her. Because in an emergency what would a paramedic think if your underwear doesn't match or maybe has a tiny hole somewhere...
    At home I don't care at all what I look like. It's the only place where I can truly relax, so I do exactly that.
