I'm finishing my master's degree in computer engineering and of course we never studied anything specific to games, do you think learning game programming and making some projects in my spare time is enough to land a job in the gaming industry someday? (Of course I don't expect to get into a super famous AAA studio right away)
    Edit: great video btw (🤤🍰)

"Enough" might not be true, but it will most definitely help! You'll likely receive a test when applying for jobs, so the more you have seen and solved on your own time, the better. Some studios also require working demos of functionalities and systems. So yeah, building your own portfolio is important I think. Having one may not land you a job 100% of the time, but not having one will certainly close a lot of doors.

@@cellobass6195 thanks for the reply👍 yeah for sure one also has to go through the recruitment process and pass the various tests. Now I realize what I meant was if it's enough to get the attention of the recruiters and have a real chance, because at the end of last year I applied to some internships at various studios and my CV was pretty empty with no portfolio or significant experience (I started learning unity in that time so I had nothing to show), so of course I only got rejected lol. So I'm trying to figure out how to improve my chances for the future 👍

What would be good pieces to create to put on my portfolio as a programmer?

I recommend opening Unreal Engine 4, and making a game in C++. As for what to make, pick a genre, design a game with a handful of mechanics, and follow some tutorials to make them. If you want a course, I recommend the C++ Unreal course on Udemy (they go on sale often for $20).

That's not how it works, you need to establish yourself first. Big studios aren't going to pick up someone with no track record or a portfolio to show. Not to mention, many studios won't just take a game pitch out of nowhere. You need to find a publisher, find their email, and contact them directly. I recommend prototyping your game first before contacting anyone. Making games is hard.
