I can't think of a single current generation songwriter who could come up with this caliber of lyrics and musical composition! This is a platinum example of 20th century musical inspiration. ✌️🕊️

Great reaction! This is all about the lyrics, which are brilliant. This is sung from the point of view of the devil, who mentions times in history where he wreaked havoc (like killing the Kennedys and being around in the blitz in WWII). The key message is at the very end where he says, "I'll tell you one time. You're to blame." He also says that the Kennedy brothers assassinations were done with "you and me", and he says also that he is "in need of some restraint", which humanity always fails to provide, and instead allows him to run free at will doing evil. So the point of the song is that the devil is telling us that we are his accomplices by allowing him to reign unchecked.

Excellent analysis, Mike. I, too, kind of had it 'figured out' a while back. I suppose one could say that we've met the Devil, and he is US!!

The song's lyrics are fairly straight forward with the "devil" singing about his past deeds but also alludes to who the so called devil (or evil) is "when after all, it was you and me". At least this is my interpretation. If you look at this video link there are some clips of the Stones recording this song from 1968 and it shows Charlie play the drum part at ~1 min 25 sec. I think you were referring to this drumming part. th-cam.com/video/juChsS5KvhQ/w-d-xo.html Anyway this song is so ingenious and iconic and one of the Stones most famous songs.

Great video by the way. Heard this song a thousand times over the decades, but only after finally seeing this lyric version 3 or 4 years ago, did I finally pay attention. Same thing happened with that other song of their's. Can't think of the name offhand....but that song....with the line...."You took a shot away....You took a shot away...:" Mary Clayton? Was a backup singer?. You guys know what song it is? 'Gimme' Shelter'.

The song is narrated by *Lucifer, The Devil.* And he's highlighting various violent parts of history, beginning with the crucifixion of Christ, and ending with the assassinations of President John Kennedy, and his brother, Senator Robert Kennedy, in the '60s, just before the song was written. What Lucifer is saying to us is that, while he was present for all those events, he was not alone in causing them, it was we humans, through the expression of our own free will, who committed those (and all) crimes and acts of war throughout history. And for that reason, we should stop putting all the blame on him. He's saying he's been singled out wrongly all these centuries, so we should have some sympathy for him. It's one of the Top 5 songs of all-time. Study the lyrics, there are some historical references in there you should learn about.

Dude, you're not old enough to have forgotten your history classes. Read the lyrics because some of them are difficult to hear. It's the devil telling you about atrocities that have occurred throughout history. He's trying to convince you that he deserves some sympathy because he gets blamed for all of these things. He saying that he just happened to be around when all of these atrocities took place, but he didn't cause any of them, we did. But, Isn't that exactly the kind of thing the devil would say? He's a trickster.
