Gen Y here, born 1984. First time I heard bands like the Stones and The Doors I turned my back on Blink-182, KORN, and all of my generation's favorite bands. I listen to only 60s-70s stuff, have not looked back since.

This song isn't going to mean as much if you don't know the history behind the lyrics. I was blessed to see Mick sing this song live on a tiny platform 130 ft in the air in 1989 at Legion Field. BTW "In Living Color" open for TRS. Stylistically, their music is a creative fusion influenced by heavy metal, funk, jazz, hip hop, punk, and alternative rock. You should check them out. Not that many black heavy metal bands out there.

His name is Lucifer, in the song he deserves sympathy because he was created to be what he is... So we tend to conflate Satan, the devil, and Lucifer, when Lucifer is god's most attractive angel, who was created to be the Satan for all that God created, but the devil is actual evil, while Satan is just a title of opposition...
Lucifer chose to be evil. He was jealous of God. He's the fallen angel. Once he became ruler of Hell, his name was changed to Satan, because Lucifer was the name God gave him as the most attractive angel, so he didn't want to remain associated with anything doing with God, & to be his own God, separate of all God stood for. All other angels that followed, & fell with him became demons/devils in his service.

And Keith Richards (the Stones main guitar player, secondary vocal and co-song writer) was famously very, very bitchy about Mick accepting. He makes good points too about Mick tarnishing all the other band members intentions with the band by accepting without consulting them first.
He refused his own offer and said 'I wouldn't let anyone from that family touch me with a long stick, never mind a sword!'
Years before being offered the knighthood he already said 'They wouldn't dare, they know exactly where I'd tell them to stick it.'
It's important to note that both Mick and Keith grew up with a long history of abhorring their native countries monarchal system.

I think it's because the title and concept were so controversial for its day. Religion and politics are usually taboo. Many songs of the era were 9 minute or longer songs. Mostly to please a crowd that were tripping on LSD. This song has been used in so many movies because of its reference to the devil, (therefore incredibly naughty) including Denzel Washington's 'Fallen' or Tom Cruise in 'Interview with a Vampire'.
Wait til Jojo learns about Van Morrison. Cleaning Windows by Van Morrison is a good one.

If you took two minutes to actually look up and read the lyrics you, I suspect,would get quite a history lesson. By the way this was 1969......none of today's mechanical bullshit. No songs back then that had more writing credits than different words.

To understand the lyrics you need some knowledge of history. Its a problem for americans, who only learn something about their country but NOTHING about history "outside" of america!

I'm disappointed. You're usually quite perceptive, so I'm surprised you didn't catch on to who Mick Jagger is impersonating here. The answer to that question is in the song's title, is hinted throughout the lyrics, and even spelled out clearly later on when he sings "Just call me Lucifer."
Oh, and yes! They had studios back then (of course they did!) This is a live version, which are often longer than the originals. The song on the album is 'only' over 6 minutes. Still long by today's standards, for sure, but not so uncommon in the 60's and 70's.
And you should know that, too, cause you've already reacted to quite a few of those longer tracks ("Stairway to Heaven," "Child in time," Rainbow's "Stargazer," etc.)
A little advice. Music in the seventies was opinionated and political. I noticed you did not know his name(referring to the song) If you knew your history, re all the incidents that changed the human direction(most bad), you would have known that the song is about the devil and how he had a hand in it all or how he picked up the pieces. EG.. He mentions he was there when Jesus has his moment of weakness and pain.(First verse). They will never make music like this again because this generation is plugged in and do not envole themselves in agendas. This generation does not look up.😊

This is a very bad recording, the studio version is much better. You really get the feel of the meaning of the lyrics. The song is about how the devil has inserted himself in human history and corrupted mankind.
