Linseed oil is a really good rust stopper. If you smear it onto the metal with a paper towel and let it dry for a few days, the oil will make a sort of clear coat on the metal that stops the rust.

Iron forged before 1945 is actually really valuable for scientific instruments as it doesn't have radiation from the air mixed in like modern iron does.

Was it completely necessary to presoak in vinegar?
Does the inside need to be sealed with anything?
id probably seal it with some bees wax to keep it from rusting or another sealant of choice that's just my personal go to
Good idea to slow/stop rusting...
@@jameshoffman1842 yea it lasts a long time too even when washing its also safe for food if u coat a knife with it
Are you going to seal it somehow? So it doesn’t rust, I’ve had that problem with my Damascus rings.

Hobbyist smith here, for my education what made you choose to drill out the center of the ring instead of using a punch through the center?
Is twisting for patterns or other purpose?
I didn't see the patterns🤔
Looked pretty darn good, the next one you do. Leave the outside as is, rough
Might be a option

Is the vinegar used for etching?
That looks sick! I love it!
What was the purpose of the acetic acid?
Why he twisted the rod?
How did you seal it so it wouldn’t rust on contact with skin?
I recently made a wrought ring and beeswax doesn’t seem to last

The twist is for alignment of the grain structure to prevent splitting.... the vinegar was to remove scale.
@Christ Centered Ironworks should have just used cold rolled then. That's a waste at this point....
It was a customer request...

To maintain proper grain orientation

I don't think it was necessary to use vinegar.

what did forging & twisting do? there's no grain or pattern in the metal, seems wasted effort.
The twist was to orient the grain direction
You'll want to bevel (and probably polish) the inside edges, lest the sharp 90° edges cut into your finger.
