How can you stop a Nuclear Missile?

  • When I was growing up in England in the 1970’s and though the 1980’s in particular, there was an almost palpable fear that a nuclear exchange could break out between the superpowers at almost any time.

    It caused me and many others around at the time to wonder was there a way to stop a missile attack but to be honest there was very little you could do. If you lived in a big city or near a military base, there was nothing to stop an ICBM or Intercontinental Ballistic missile once it was on its way and with the 4 minute warning we would have in the UK, you might as well have one last game of missile command and hope for a quick end.
    Roll on 35+ years and although we now live in a time of where the threat from nuclear attack is much less, it’s still present, even if it may have moved to a different area of the globe.
    So, with the advancement of technology, can we stop a missile attack now, once it’s been launched

      And of course the moment it's known something is possible, someone's going to do it, so 'banning nuclear weapons' isn't going to do any good. We effectively tried that already with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and at least 6 nations built nuclear weapons since, with several more suspected of having tried or planned to (Argentina, East Germany,Taiwan, and some think Japan and West Germany as well).

    I just realized something: if we had an amazing defense system that could kill the missile/warheads a significant percentage of the time, then we probably wouldn't know. It would be top secret until nukes _had_ to be used, so that we could stop the enemy's missiles (because they don't know we're capable of it), leaving our missiles to destroy them only. We have the incentive to not mention it.

    • @michaireneuszjakubowski5289
      @michaireneuszjakubowski5289 2 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      There IS an incentive to mention it - knowing your strike would be way less effective than the counterstice would probably make aggression apear more costly, or else require a truly massive strike capability to overpower (maintaining which costs - a lot). Of course, this is mainly a factor for those powers whose aims are mostly defensive.

At greater distances from ground zero where buildings will still stand, but may be damaged, hiding under a desk, in a closet, or in a hallway, away from windows, can and does protect from injury death from projectiles such as broken glass, branches etc. A little common sense could be applied here. People injured from flying projectiles from the Chelyabinsk meteor were 100's of kms away from the epicenter, most injuries were secondary blast effects from flying glass debris. There was in fact a teacher that saw the flash and quickly told her pupils to "duck and cover" saving many of them from injury as the resultant blast wave came minutes later and blew all the windows in. The M.A.D.-strategy has one weakness : What if your enemy does not care about being destroyed? For example, if your enemy is highly religious they might not care if they die, because they might believe that regardless whether they die or not, killing the enemy/unbelievers gives them rewards in heaven/paradise.

      I was using an analogy, not making a claim about the direct vicinity of Fukushima. It was an analogy about the relative size of Fukushima’s radiation leak compared to the size of the ocean.
      We’re clearly looking at and reading different sources. Time for me to start reading more research articles.

    • @dirtypure2023
      @dirtypure2023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Anson Zhao, look up "nuclear fallout" or search for information about the Fukushima nuclear disaster which resulted in untold millions of gallons of radioactive water being dumped into the Pacific Ocean. Just imagine how far ocean currents can move radioactive particles (eventually around the entire globe). Also consider ocean life like fish becoming irradiated, then caught by fisherman and eaten by the public.
      There are many many ways for radiation to travel from one place to another.

      Most of these things he talked about like multiple war heads traveling at 5 miles per second already existed for decades. NK just needs to figure out how to make it work, once they do... No one will be able to mess with them. let's hope a war breaks out and destroys NK before they make a working long range ICBM.

    FYI: That scene of Sprint missile at 7:58 isn't speed up, that's real. 0 to 7 kilometers per second (yeah second) in 4 seconds. You can see that the missile is glowing white hot in the next video and the first stage is just 'explode' on separation

    • @CarloRizzante
      @CarloRizzante 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting, thanks for the note. I guess the text was slightly incorrect, then, because it says "Sprint ABM will be fitted with 20k tons warheads". But perhaps it's my understanding that's not complete on the matter.

      Carlo - 20 k tons seems about right. That is not the weight but the equivialnt explosive power - how much TNT you would need for the same explosion.
      And that is about the yield of the 2 atomic bombs used on Japan.

    something that comes down from space at mach 20+ and also makes curves is extremely difficult, especially when the silluette makes it very difficult to see on the radar and even more so to track it for intercept.
    The best defense against a nuclear missile is to have MORE nuclear missiles.

      Working on quantum mechanics like Einstein doesn't mean that you're making an atomic bomb DUMBASS.
      Next time, don't treat people of dumbasses when you don't even have a slightest piece of knowledge in science history.

      Einstein was specifically prohibited by the US govt from being part of the Manhattan Project that developed the first working atomic bombs. Einstein wrote a letter to President Roosevelt in 1939 that helped convince the US govt to start the Manhattan Project, and some of his physics theories were used during the bomb development, but Einstein never actually worked on the development of the atomic bombs. The head scientist in the Manhattan Project was a British physicist called Robert Oppenheimer.
