I think there is no objective "Hammond B3" sound, and definitely no objective clone. The B3, M3, and the Leslie cabinets of the day all contributed to a loose collection of tunes and sounds which we lump into the "Hammond sound". Honestly, the actual rotating Leslie speaker had more to do with the "B3 sound" than anything, and how it was mic'd and recorded in the studio also played a huge part in its sound, as well as the skills of the player using it and the organ. And yet, even if you lugged a real B3 and Leslie on stage, it's going to sound different every time due to the fact that the organ is being run through a speaker moving and pushing sound through air rapidly in different directions - and every room is different too. All of this to say that there is no holy grail, other than that feeling you get when you are right next to a Leslie and feeling the power as you pull the stops and the rotary is kicking on and off on your whim. Everything else is just a mirror reflection, not the real thing. The attempt to capture that in a purely electronic circuit has kept players going to the latest and greatest attempt like a carrot on a stick for 40 years and counting, but it will never happen. Just find an organ and fx sound that you are happy with for what it is today - because unless you have a crew and a truck, the real thing ain't coming to your gig, and no synth or module will ever compare fully. And last but not least, if you are a good player you can make even mediocre organ patches sound good, as good as it can for being a patch, anyway. It ain't the golf club, it's the swing.

      @MrSoulman74 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Having worked with a keyboard player with a split A100 and Leslie who also had a Nord for smaller gigs I can confirm that nothing sounds anything like the real thing when played side by side, you can feel the stage shaking once the pedal keys on the Hammond come in, you become a bit spoilt after that.

Hello Jack. I believe it's more how one understands the making of an organ sound, than the exact clone one decides on. You, btw, are a fine organist, in my not so humble opinion. I do like you playing blues on organ. That and your general cheeky attitude. Rock on, o tortured genius.

PS. for example the ferrofish's higher drawbars were too loud when pulled all the way out, so one would have to know not to pull them all the way out, if one wanted as beefy a sound. But yeah, a fish and say, a MODX7 would be almost enough maybe!

Good compare. I was searching for this exact question. Off topic. . . . Since the crumar mojo uses the vB3 software I’ve been too lazy to see how one could hook the vB3 live . Would there be latency? Would the eq from a laptop cut through? And other questions I don’t know the awnswer to as I only use hardware. In essence, wouldn’t using vB3 be the real money saver for a decent organ patch?

keep in mind, a) for a while, the vb3-2 was unique to the hardware versions of the mojo, and the gemini module. Now, VB3-2 is available in software, but theres also the keybed to take into account, the mojo keybed is nearly optimized for organ style, all that palm smearing, thats the real deal, tahts what you wanna do to a good organ sound. So, One MIGHT AS WELL just get the mojo, if they really wanna do a good ammount of organ playing, but of course, plenty of people want that next level sound, but dont wanna buy a whole separate keyboard to play it!

Shrillness may be to do with your eq and amp? Hammonds produce little over 6kHz and the old Leslies rolled off at about 5kHz. If you don't eq the higher fs out, you may be hearing complex harmonics and overtones.

The Reface YC is amazing, I bought this instrument about two years ago. It was the first instrument for me to buy and I learned myself to play on it. I have had so much fun with it. However I'm at a point now were I really need more keys to make more progress. So I purchased the Roland FP30 today so that I can connect the two instruments. I think the roland has really nice keys and combined with the sounds of the YC I think it will be a pleasure to play this setup. Anyone any thoughts or additions? since I'm not that expertised in all of this? I just love to play and I'm so excited with my new purchase. To whoever reads this: have a nice day😎

If you don’t know Ferrofish so much, you better not compare it to anything ! You probably just saw it for the first time... In addition, the Clavia is approx. 10dB louder than Ferrofish, because you probably don't have a small mixer (?) or not able to adjust the levels (?). Weird and sad...

I find that 'Galileo' on iPad is an ausome Hammond emulation & almost infinately tweakable , the Drawbar organ in Garage Band is also excellent .However, it would be nice to have real physical drawbars. It's a pity that Neo (Ventilator 2) don't do a Hammond emulator box as well !

How does the Ferrofish stack up against the Reface YC? The Nord isn't exactly in my price range, so I'd be more interested in that comparison.

I can't really try a Ferrofish. I can't currently think of anywhere local I could go and try a YC either, but that does seem a more likely possibility.
I've read the YC is just playing back samples, but I can't really of a reason why that wouldn't be good enough, for organ sounds. It's not like pianos, where they have to have different dynamics - there's really just the one.
I keep hearing people saying the Leslie speaker simulation isn't good enough - on anything though, so it doesn't seem like a relevant criticism of any particular organ simulator.
Apparently Laurens Hammond didn't like Leslie speakers at all, and tried to make it harder to fit them to his organs :)

I looked at this (along with a lot of other comparisons) before I bought my "organ" - but ended up with a Viscount Legend Expander released Jan 19. Its a LOT better then the Ferrofish - its better (at B3/C3/A100 - doesnt do the piano stuff) than the Nord. Retails just over £500 - but not available in the UK except by special order (had to get mine from a popular German online store - £505 delivered). I think Jack and Andertons need to investigate this unit - for a module around the £500 mark it knocks everything else out of the water. Same engine as on Viscounts full twin manual organs - and if its good enough for Steve Windwood.......

Having owned and played real Hammonds the ones these days are basically all imitations of the real deal. The Hammond version is by far above the Nord but the Nord is a great keyboard in its own right .The Viscount is also worth a mention as well. Try as they might you just are not going to emulate the tone wheel sound . To many elements to copied realistically. That said it is easier by far to carry a clone around and much better on your back in the long run. Just so you will know I had a B3 chop , and an A100.

  • @transpermeance1535

More important than the tone is the precision with which it delivers the timing intent of the player to the sound engine and the random latencies which are introduced in the sound generation pipeline. Real Hammonds have multiple contact switches per key switching always running tone wheels so very low and consistent latency from key press to sound. Using low latency as a criterium, that rules out any externally connected midi unit using 31.25Kbps single channel connection to a scanned keybed where latency can be a random 1-10msecs key to sound. Here is an example of a true low latency clone wheel organ and what precise low latency can allow. th-cam.com/video/4t2thb0Nv70/w-d-xo.html

Well if organ is your main interest and that is the vast majority of what you gig then an actual hammond is the obvious choice. However I'd imagine that alot of the people who watch these videos are keyboardists that gig regularly and usually have to have the versatility to play piano, synth, organ, etc on demand. For alot these people lugging around even a xkc3 just for organ sounds on top of a regular stage piano may not make much sense.
