thanks for this gem! Merry Christmas! P.S. //actually, Kosenko is considered to be our ukrainian composer. His mother was ukrainian. He lived and taught students in Zhytomyr & Kyiv, so that's not a russian piano concerto :)

Such a nice piece. I think the reason it's not as popular is that the whole first movement is filled with high tension. Would be better if adding some silent moment
These guys are even more dramatic and technically dazzling than Liszt and Rachmaninov But Liszt and Rachmaninov are more profound ( though these others have profound moments too ) Also I sense that Liszt and Rachmaninov, like Chopin arranged the musical material into a more well defined format,so that one could sense a clear unfolding of the ideas and sense of direction, whereas these other lesser known composers tend to just let the music flow on a logically sequential way no doubt, but with less regard to maintaining a format though there are returns to the already presented material here and there, This looser format, bordering on extemporization, makes it harder for the iistener to follow and to predict where the music will go and hence to emotionally ride with the music. so to speak
Described as being "bombastic". The recording suffers from a lack of dynamic contrasts. There seems little recognition of the dynamics as indicated in the score.
i know the recordings old and this is a mighty work to learn, but these pianists are atrocious, the dynamics just bleed together and ruin the beauty and genius of such a pretty concerto
I thought Liszt and Rachmaninov were the last chapter on technically dazzling music but there's others as I see, with incredible imaginations and sense of the dramatic employing à vast pléthora of technical and textural devices heightening the sense of the dramatic and often very inspired in nature
I've never heard of this composer before, but this masterwork is astounding. It may even surpass Rachmaninov's third piano concerto. He has late Romantic/ Russian feel that almost overwhelms you. I thank Revusky and Maiboroda for finishing this masterwork up after it was damaged.

the idea of russian and ukrainian we had these days do not fit with the old people, all of them were part of the russian empire later soviet union, so its not like you could said this bassically they all are russian composer, however if you do not like the idea of that you could just call them slavic composer
@@randomguy2426it wouldn’t be a problem if Russia’s actual territory were the same, but the fact is that many actual countries and their culture have always been there, despite of the fact that they were under the russian empire. So it’s understandable that generalising all the slavic composers as Russians is not as accurate, there are a lot of differences between them because of their influences.
It’s quite obviously an unfortunate recording situation, everything will sound loud when there is no engineer to fix it. Get out of your basement and go to a concert hall.
It's a pity Nikulin made it sound like a very tiring tour de force. Is the piece actually a horse race? Aren't there any points of rest, some quiet moments in the first movement when it doesn't make my head throb with those full-blasted accords? Any balance? Is there nobody else who feels that the first movement is near ugly and nerve-wrecking to the point of being almost unbearable? The second rendition is only slightly better so I guess the problem was with the composition. The second movement is somewhat better and more enjoyable but there are also minutes of bombastic, harsh quality that don't sound good enough. In the third mvmt. the piano sounds more like a piano instead of an oversized drum but the orchestra takes over smashing the chords like the greatest thing in the world. It simply isn't. No wonder this concerto is out of the limelight. Of course it's only my opinion but history seems to be on my side...
absolutely agree. I haven't listened to the second recording, but the first pianist just continually plays forte dynamics minimum. it's really exhausting. I think the composition is very interesting, and the first movement holds up interest very well for such a long piece, but I agree, that it is just too much, too long and too loud. the audio quality unfortunately makes this rendition of the piece nearly unlistenable in my opinion.
