When the piano brings in the main theme for the first time, it sounds so beautiful and natural that it is as if that were the only melody in the world...
Something many composers struggle with is expanding on ideas, often making their music sound like it is jumping from idea to idea too quickly. However this composer is excellent when it comes to sticking to an idea or theme, and expanding upon it.
Bortkiewicz was a teacher at the Klindworth-Scharwenka-Konservatorium in Berlin, whose founder the composer Karl Klindworth was a friend and admirer of Richard Wagner.
Along with Scriabin's concerto and Rubinstein's fourth concerto, this is one of the 'lost' masterpieces that belongs in the regular repertoire. It's at least as good as the Grieg concerto, so there is no reason for this concerto to have been ignored for so long.
@@tancreddehauteville764 I can see why you might say that. Thank you for the upload. You've put a lot of effort to sync the sheet music with the recording. Good quality recordings of this masterpiece are so hard to find! In my opinion, this recording doesn't do enough justice to the wonderful concerto. I've felt more than once that it may not have been rehearsed enough before the performance. For example, 27:47 could easily be an inspiration for a James Bond movie (just like Bortkiewicz's 2nd concerto, lol). However, it sounds here like the performers desperately tried to keep track of the rhythm and sacrificed the musical balance.
My teacher's (Arminda Schutte) FAVORITE concerto, played one last time when she was 71. Bortkiewicz wrote brilliantly and masterfully for both the piano and the orchestra, and harmonized chromatic lines as well as any Russian!
