  • Ep94. In our continuing quest to find a future liveaboard Catamaran to be our future home, at the Annapolis Sailboat show, we tour one of our favorite boats from last year, the Majestic 530.
    This boat is big. This boat has a beautiful wood interior and it comes chalked full of all of the things that are extra on other boats; Water maker, 12kw generator, 2000 watts of solar panels, a built in Scuba Dive Tank Compressor, In boom furling main, bow thrusters, Radar, AIS, 12 person life raft and much much more. The boat is completely customizable from floor plan layout to the Cushions and Flatware that you put on the boat . It certainly is a boat to behold and at a List Price of $950,000 it has the added bonus of being $250,000 cheaper than our favorite boat up to this point .... The Xquisite X5.
    At the end of this video Janice and I talk about which of the boats we put in which order. Does the Majestic 530 end up at the top of our list? You will have to watch and find out what boats make our top 5.

    Also a really nice boat. (looking at the inside and what you get)
    The price was surprising, didnt expect that.
    950 for a fully fitted 53 feeter is a very good price.
    Also, you could negotiate (5-10% off) for a better price, making it even "cheaper"
    Keep sailing!

    I love the idea of a washing machine in the cockpit rather than squeezed in to a forward hull.

      I agree. Best spot for it. No heat and moisture put into your interior. Every Cat should have it set up outside.

    Love this boat, it may not be a great sail boat, but I live in the Philippines and would only use it for going island to island with the family....living aboard when the kids are out of school....so if you compare it to a Nordhavn trawler, you get the same speed at 1/5 the cost and with the draft can get places you cant get to in another boat..also you can carry a larger tender...

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So a Trawler is 1/5 the price of this? New? I doubt that? But we are only interested in sailboats anyway. Always a great feeling to move your home from A to B just with wind at no cost. Plus it is silent. Which is so nice.

    There are a few concerns I have there website is not updated with the latest specs on the boat.There is also no mention with regards to the service network of the company or warranty of the boat and no mention of price or options anywhere on there site.
    I also noticed you had to mention things with regards to the boat as the women giving the tour lacked any form of interest in the boat whatsoever.
    These are reasons why I would go with Xquiste yachts over this.

      Oh very cool. She was interested (as was I) with how you boat turns out. Please reach out to me on our email CruisingOffDuty@gmail.com and tell us how things go and what your true thoughts are on the process as you have the boat, New, 1 yr old, 2 years old etc. If this is the boat for us, I'd like to know real world experience of how one is to own. Not just what people at the show say. I think they kind of have to say good things when they are being paid to help sell boats. So please email me and we will stay in touch. Thanks! Craig

    It looks like a house built in 1998. A bit dated, but not completely out-of-date (yet!) The gloss wood is not my style. Looks cheaper than other interiors. But it probably is since its $250k cheaper than some 50' cats..

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We like the inside. Janice loves the wood. The outside shape does look a bit dated.

    • @waltervanderboor
      @waltervanderboor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Living on board for ten years in a boat with real wood, I can assure you that for live aboards the flumpsy imitation wood are not a good option. The outside hull might look outdated but we would choose this just because the interior is so well thought true. Style of the finish is a matter of taste, but just saying. Living on board you’ll forget taste rather quickly if the beautiful plastic finished door is falling apart. If the boat is just for some holidays it probably doesn’t matter that much.

    • @silentstormstudios
      @silentstormstudios 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@waltervanderboor I can surely see the quality wood being preferred for an adult live aboard. I'm guessing the imitation wood options might be better if there a lots of kids involved. I can see that nice polished wood taking some dings with kids running about.

    Hi Guys, I've delivered this yacht from Cape town to Durban 2 years ago. Please note, this is not a sailing boat, it's a motorboat with a mast as an 'after-thought'. Very poor sailing vesel abilities indeed. Stay away, unless you need a static luxury home at anker:-(

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hmmmm. Thanks for your input. I have heard different stories. Some say it is a fine at sailing. Some say it is slow but respectable. Before we ever buy anything we will obviously take them out for test sails. If you are right and it can't sail in decent wind we will not buy it. But many of these boats have moved around the world from their factory in South Africa so I assume they can sail OK. No one who has owned one has ever told me that they have to motor to get anywhere.

      I did a bit of checking because Chris Mostert post didn't sound right. Royal Cape has no record of this guy sailing any of their cats nor does Moorings or anyone else. I have personally spoken to the owner of this boat and they have no idea who he is. You would think that the owner of a new boat would remember the guy that delivered it to them. But they have not heard of this guy.
      The people from Royal Cape Catamarans, Ken and his lovely wife, the owners, James, the builder, and three owners are all very nice and have been more than willing to answer any and all questions about the boat and show me everything.
      I believe, and this is ONLY my opinion, is that Chris, or whoever he really is, is a competitor trying to steer people away from a beautiful boat, built by some very nice people. I am going to enjoy doing business with them when I order my new boat in the near future.

      I hear that Chase. If money was no barrier, I'd still pick the X5 as I'm a Tech lover too. But, it being $250,000 more than the Majestic, 3 feet shorter, with no liferaft, scuba tank and other features, and having a wife that "Loves Wood" (ha ha), the Majestic might end up being the winner.

    remember 90% of enjoyment owning a boat is the sailing performance the rest can be changed but if a boat is a dog no matter how nice it is on the inside ,if its a slug you will never really like the boat, my view .

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To each his own. My thought is you spend 90% of the time at anchor. 10% sailing. So if it is a bit slow for the 10% of the time, we can live with it as long as we are comfortable at anchor. :-)

      true, but what do we buy a yacht for , what i should say is 'a launch can do that' but sitting on 8 , 10 ,even 15 kts on a beam run, no noise & if its in the right direction well a launch cant do that , that's happiness.

  • @Aventura2005
    @Aventura2005 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I saw some of your movies and my perception of your knowlwdge about catamarans is that it is not yet mature, which only happens with experience and some theoretical learning. You seem to apreciate size and space above anything else... I never saw both of you looking at important parameters, like for example bridgedeck clearance, how easy it is to maintain, etc. Please buy one of this boats that you like so much, go to sea for a while and learn about what realy matters. I believe you will be surprised how wrong is at the moment your scale of values. Please read with attention what people with experience say to you, for example the delivery skipper of this boat before you make the mistake of buying the wrong catamaran. When I change from monohull to catamaran, I thought I knew a lot about them and I made the mistake of buying one with very low bridgedeck clearance. It cost me a lot. My next catamaran was a much better sea boat but even so, before I bought it, I delivered one just to make sure it was not a dog like the first one. Good luck with your endeavour.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. We are still years away. We are just looking to see what Cats seem like something we can enjoy living in. Before we finally buy we will definitely take some of these our for some test sails. Don't worry we aren't in a habit of throwing big money at a boat without testing it's sailing abilities. But we don't need a racing focussed Cat. This will be our floating home. We will be retired and not in a rush to go anywhere. Comfort and safety is the most important. Speed is the least. But that is just our thoughts. You are entitled to you own opinions on what is important.

    • @Aventura2005
      @Aventura2005 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But confort at sea is precisely what I also want and is linked to the design of the boat, no matter what size it is. You might have a big catamaran that is confortable as long as it is in a marina and becomes unconfortable at anchor in front of an island with reasonable wind and strong sea state and worst at a sea passage and there are others that are much better in these conditions even if they are smaller and seemingly less confortable inside a marina. You need to realise this on your search for the ultimate catamaran. By the way, some time ago a naval architect named Chris White wrote in is Web pages a very good article on what to look in the search for a good sea going catamaran. Good luck with your search.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Rui. I know bridge deck clearance and other factors need to be considered to have an enjoyable boat to live on. Lot more research will be done before we finally buy.

    I love the reviews and the insight as this is my 15 year plan as as well.. though I might just throw it all out the window and buy a lagoon 400 S2 or a FP Orana and just set sail early while I'm still young enough to enjoy it.

    Why would a catamaran need a bowthruster?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont think it NEEDs one but if you want to pull up to an open spot on a wall and slide directly sidways into the spot, you could. Seem unnecessary to me as well. One more think to service and to break.

  • @simonattwood6100
    @simonattwood6100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not entirely sure why a cat would need a bow thruster when you can literally spin them on the spot with the engines.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wondered that too. But perhaps with the bow thruster you could move the boat directly sideways if you were in a tight docking situation? Who knows? But it is there if you need it. Only Cat I know that comes with one standard.

    • @donjohnston3776
      @donjohnston3776 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Makes a lot of sense given the size of the boat, skill of the pilot and the crowding at marinas. Would like be a great back-up in some situation where one of the main engines is inoperable. Great feedback, review and tour.

      @Bowmans-Woods  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Have you ever seen a catamaran knocked down? They don't temporarily stay on their sides like a monohull. They always go upside down. A monohull's weighted keel pulls it back upright after a knockdown. It takes a power boat to right a catamaran.

      @Bowmans-Woods  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A big heavy Cat like this is never going to flip. The mast and rigging will snap long before it flips. If it was a light performance cat then yes it could flip. Not the case with the heavy displacement "Cruising Cats".

    Greg and Janice, if only those pesky boats had a price cap of 200 grand but, they do not. The ultimate dream boat doesn't exist, for any of us. That said, I would have some questions. It seems your overriding ask of any boat you'd buy is size, wood and creature comfort. If that is case wouldn't make more sense to buy a house in the Caribbean and a 36ft cat?
    Regarding the Majestic, do realise wood, even vernier, is a pain to maintain. Second thing slapping on the water is not very nice, to me the boat is way too low, certainly on long crossings (and with that weight/boat speed) it is probably counter productive. Then there is my pet peeve: Too much volume at the front. After all the Majestic was a modified Van de Stadt. Finally last, system integration. Compared with the X5 it is hopelessly outdated.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Paul. We plan to circumnavigate the globe on which ever boat we end up with. Not stay in one place. If we wanted to stay at one Island for the rest of our lives, then buying a small beach house or condo and then having a smaller sailboat (Even the 35' we have now) to go out for a few days at a time would be a good idea. But staying in one spot in not in our DNA. We'd get bored with one location. We want to explore the world, meet new people and explore other cultures. Not just the Caribbean. Thanks for your input though.

    This is truly some great blue water cruiser. I completly love it and I can understand you do to.
    I think you guys and me pretty much have the same taste and look for the same things.
    This Royal Cape Majestic 530 and the St Francis 50 Mk2 is 2 very similar boats. Not only in size and design but also how versatile the yard is when it comes to modifying it to the owners wishes. Looking at cabinatry, doors etc it looks like Majestic and St Francis copied eachother. To bad you did not have a chanse to see the St Francis. It has a slight different design, the hulls are different, slightly more narrow and the performance of a St Francis may be slightly faster but has perhaps a bit less storage space.
    Both STF and Majestic has a very good re-sale value. Lagoon cant even compare there.
    You mention Antares 44. It is a much smaller boat although well stocked out, they also have the Antares school that teach you all about the boat but being made in a low cost country like Argentina I do believe the price dont reflect that well enough. The SA boats have better pricing.

      I know what you are saying. The production builders do have upgrade options that you can pay extra for so not every boat is the exact same. Maybe a better name is a Boutique builder. A builder that only builds a few boats a year and puts more effort into top quality and handcrafted carpentry. You can not say that for a big production boat that mass produces boats. You can not compare the interior carpentry found in the Majestic to a Leopard. Leopard doesn't come even close.

An Outremer with daggerboards or an HH will beat me to the next anchorage but once we are there together, they would want to hang out in the Majestic. Comfort over speed.

    • @silentstormstudios
      @silentstormstudios 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bowmans-Woods Well, keep in mind that the faster boats will also be able to run out of the way of the weather should a storm be bearing down, and might leave you wishing for some extra speed if caught in a bad situation. Most storms at sea travel at around 10-12 kts, so if you can only get 8 knots, you're going to be in a bad way, where as if you can get 12 knots plus, you can likely get to safety.

    Large Royal Cape Cat ?

  • @nicholasbochenek4821
    @nicholasbochenek4821 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The boat seems decent, but it just seems like something that would get cluttered really easily. The price is nice and low for its size and the extras but there are lots of things that seem to hold it down. First is that the boat is honestly cancer for the eye considering it looked like some baby stacked legos on top of each other and that made it into the design. It almost looks like some kind of monster with the huge amount of hatches. The second thing is that you can already tell that the thing wont move anywhere without some really strong gale and a lot of engine power. The interior was nice but the layout just seemed out of place and awkward. All the wood and tiles and rocks would just slow the boat down tremendously. I also have a feeling that a lot of things would just go wrong and break and you would not be able to keep up with it. Also, the boat is just huge and there is a lot of stuff that you just dont need to the point where it just clutters the boat. I love the simplicity of the Fountaine Pajots and their reliability. Its what makes the other boats still competitive when this boat seems so amazing. Its only the first impression the boat gives out. You have to dig deeper to find something truly good about this boat.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear ya. We love the interior beauty. It does have an older looking shape though. I would be a big boat to handle with just 2 people living full time on it too. But the inside and all the thrown in extras is impressive.

    The lady was speaking about storage aboard, if you can show where one would store extra stores aboard. Food, like for extended cruising a deep freezer, bulk food type storage. Please! I would be cruising with six to eight people and you know the consumption rate. I saw Sailing Delos and they bought eight tons of food on a monohull is there that kind of storage space?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is there that kind of storage space on the Majestic 530? Hell yes. That boat is HUGE inside. So many cabinets everywhere. Plus there is always storage under the seats and of course under the floorboards. If there is one Cat at the show that has super wide hulls and probably would not be that adversely affected by carrying a lot of extra weight in gear and provisions it would be the Majestic. The faster thinner Cats like the Katana or the Outremer would probably sail much worse than they normally would if you loaded them down because they have such narrow hulls. They are built for speed. The Majestic wont sail nearly as fast but it has plenty of storage space.

      I hear what you are saying about the windows. It is definitely not the 360 view you get with many other modern cats. The Majestic 530 is getting a new hull design in the future. Maybe they increase and lower the windows in the next model.
      Canada uses metric too. But since we live right beside the US (that doesn't) people still quote how tall they are in feet and inches and their weight in pounds, not kilos. So when someone tells me how tall they are in Meters I have to get out a calculator to figure out what that is in feet. And as police officers, we are always saying what a suspect looks like over the radio and everyone (even the young cops) quote it in feet even though I bet the computer probably says it in meters. It's a strange mix of metric and imperial over here. We do temperature in Celcius and speed in kilometres.

      Well, I can’t speak for all Marina but I think a 50’ Cat will cost 50% more to get a slip compared to a 50’ monohull. Best thing to do to save money is to anchor our or at worst grab a mooring ball. The price to use a mooring ball is the same regardless of it being a cat or mono.

      Best bang for the buck. Only question I need to test is how well does it sail.

    nice boat but the very low bridge deck clearance scares me. Couldn't find any numbers online but judging by pictures I found I'll make an educated guess of about 70 cm bridge deck clearance. That's not much so she'll be a slapper.

      Hmmmm. I'll have to look into that. It's hard to know without taking it out on a sail in some waves. One thing I remember Ken saying in a previous year is that because it has wide angled hulls it can take more weight and not drop that much lower in the water compared to Cats with straight up and down sides. Perhaps the angled hulls also stop the boat from going as low in the water when bouncing on waves allowing for less slap than you'd expect. All cats will slap if the waves get big enough. Its just one of the downsides to a Cat..

      The increased volume of the hulls over other manufacturers negate the height issue and in actuallity is less of a slapper that csts with narrower hulls.

    I think you will find that the wood interior is nothing but grief. Wood and water do not mix and the wood, even though its not solid, adds a lot of weight.

      Wood inside your salon or cabin should not be getting wet from saltwater. It looks so much richer too so I will take the little bit of effort it takes to rub in down with wood oil once a year. My present boat has wood throughout the interior and it is no work at all to keep up with. Wood outside is a bad idea though.

      Salt water in the cabin... you better believe it happens. Inexperienced crew leave the port holes open and water comes right in while sailing. A fitting breaks, and water fills the hull while your out hiking. It happens. you leave the hatches open because its so warm and then you head out to get provisions. While you are away, a squall hits and drenches the boat....It happens. The last 52' Cat I looked at had water damaged wood that was black on the edges on the floor of the port hull.... it happened

      I hear you. Salt water will eventually get in by some accident or leak but wiping down the wood after, to keep it looking nice is not a huge deal. Again, we like how much better it looks than the cheap "IKEA" fake plastic wood furniture some of the production builders are using. We have seen some of the "New" boats already have the fake plastic exterior edge of the boards already peeling up. That not good. Once that starts happening you need to replace the whole damn cabinet. The boutique builders tend to all use real wood veneer and the price of their boats are not any more expensive than the production builders, once you add on all the extra "options" you will need to add to get the production boat to a live-aboard state.

      Well all the lines lead to the helm area so it should be able to be done. But it’s a big boat so I wouldn’t want to try and pull into a marina slip alone. 😜
