Patty was unsure she could sing this at first, as humble as she truly is, so her husband placed a photograph of her father in front of her and said “Sing it to him.,” and she clearly did.

I'm a doctor in America and I went to medical school at the University of Kentucky which is the state where Harland is. The poverty and the devastation that Americans don't even realize exists in their own country is in the Appalachian Appalachian and Southern counties of Kentucky and I hope people see your video and remember that those people in our own country are suffering in need support and there are still coal miners and there are still people with no running water in that part of our country

The sadness you hear in her voice is called that “high lonesome sound”, and it’s a hallmark of bluegrass, even in the happier songs. It’s hard to exactly define, but you know it when you hear it.

Patty is one of a handful of artists that sends shivers down my spine as soon as she hits that first note. Definitely hearing that Irish and Scottish sound in her voice. How can I help you say goodbye is also another great song of hers.

My grandfather was a coal miner, in the early years of the mines. My father was born in Harlan KY. Grandpa moved his family of 16 to Indiana in the 1940s where I was born. I have heard my dad say that his family left Kentucky so the 13 brothers could live a long life and trade the mines for farms. My dad turns 91 in a few weeks, all of his brothers and 2 sisters are gone now. Believe it or not, this is the first time I have ever heard this song. I am in tears, and now I really understand what grandpa meant.

My grandfather took me to see where there had been an above-ground coal mine, we went at the crack of dawn, crept through a hole in a fence on hands and knees. It was as horrible as you can imagine, nothing lived there, not a frog, not even a bird would fly over it. We came home and I told my great-grandfather about what I had seen, and I asked him, how come you didn't end up having to work there? He said he became a farmer, because he didn't want to be one of those people who were so poor, they couldn't even afford sunshine.

  • @throneburgphoto9947
    @throneburgphoto9947 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Amazing song with so much feeling that so many can relate to. Patty Loveless and Chris Stapleton sang “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” at the 2022 CMA. It reminded me of some of my ancestors who worked and died in the coal mines. I feel for all the miners and their families who struggled to exist during this time. They faced horrible working conditions which led to strikes and wars between the miners and the coal companies, health issues like Black Lung, and the ever present danger of death. My grandfather left Caldwell County and went to Coal Creek, TN and worked as a weighmaster at one of the mines. While there he met and married my grandmother. Several members of her family worked in the mines of TN & KY. In 1902 there was an explosion in the Fraterville Mine where 216 men and boys died, making it the worst mining disaster in the state’s history. Several of the miners who died were related to my grandmother. Some of the trapped miners managed to write notes to loved ones as their oxygen was being used up and they knew death was imminent. A monument has since been erected with the names of the miners inscribed and a museum with some of the notes written by the miners. Jacob L. Vowell, who was related to my grandmother, wrote a note to his wife before dying in the mine with his young son. He wrote the following: Ellen, darling, goodbye for us both. Elbert said the Lord has saved him. We are all praying for air to support us, but it is getting so bad without any air. Ellen I want you to live right and come to heaven. Raise the children the best you can. Oh how I wish to be with you, goodbye. Bury me and Elbert in the same grave by little Eddie. Godbye Ellen, goodbye Lily, goodbye Jemmie, goodbye Horace. We are together. Is 25 minutes after two. There is a few of us alive yet.
Jake and Elbert Oh God for one more breath. Ellen remember me as long as you live Goodbye darling.
Bill Clinton recited Joe Vowell’s farewell letter in one of his speeches.
Six Vowells lost their lives in the Fraterville mine. Some of my grandmother’s relatives moved to Harlan, Kentucky where the struggle to make a living continued. Fortunately my grandfather and grandmother did leave the mining town and came home to Burke County where they raised a family, and he farmed, sawmilled, and made a little whiskey.

Coal mining, especially in the old days is one of the most dangerous occupations that someone could have.
The immediate risk is of the mine collapsing, being crushed, and/or buried alive.
The long-term effects can be a long painful death.
I'm sure all over the world the risks were similar.
These communities even today are still some of the poorest, and this would be one of the only jobs in the area.
Northeast Pennsylvania has one of the largest coal vein areas in the country.
There are currently dozens of coal mines on fire, including Centralia.
In those days boys between 8 and 12 years old were made to work, separating impurities from the coal by hand.
If they fell into the chutes they were sitting over they could be crushed.
She has a beautiful voice and is unrated in my opinion.

I come from a different type of energy type of working family. I personally worked in the oil field my whole life which was very dangerous work at the time. Now days it is a bit safer due to modern equipment and safety regulations. However it was tough work also. Although I am retired now, I suffer from all the injuries I received during that time. Back, neck,, knees just too many to mention. But I made it out alive although I've witness a death or two and have seen crazy things that I don't care to mention. Patty left us a while back, bless her soul. She will be missed greatly. RIP beautiful song bird!

Patty has some talented relatives too. Loretta Lynn (Coalminers Daughter) and Loretta's baby sister, Crystal Gayle (Don't it make My Brown Eyes Blue), are Patty's cousins. Same area but different Hollers. All of Loretta's songs are true stories of her life. Check them both out

My great grand ma knew Loretta when she was young. Never knew those three were related all amazing singers.

Have you ever heard anything so soulful? My Maternal Grandmother was born and raised in Cawood, Harlan County, Ky. She came from a large family and so I have dozens of relatives there. Harlan people are proud, tough and independent.

Patty is a pretty amazing country & bluegrass artist. You may have heard her once singing harmony with Vince Gill on Go Rest High… If you want to explore her faster, playful side, check out her Blame It On Your Heart.

Patty sings backup vocals on quite a few of Vince Gill's songs. The two make a great team! Try "When I Call Your Name" - beautiful!

I heard an interview where Vince said no one really paid attention to that song until Patty lent that harmony. Then they couldn’t wait to record it

This song has a lot of meaning to people all over Kentucky and probably all of Appalachia. If you are interested, look up the Appalachian coal wars. Or the Battle of Blair Mountain in West Virginia. Miners literally went to war with the coal company and the US Army. It was the largest civilian uprising since the American Civil War. There are two sides to Kentucky, the western part which most people think of, and then there is the coal fields in the East.

I use to listen to her back when she first started singing. She's had an incredible career. Some how I missed this one. As with her other songs I loved it! Kudos to her band too. It was fantastic.

Thank you for the great review of this song. Let me say you did it right. So many folks talk way too much and stop way too often to analyze every detail. You paid it the respect it was do, and I thank you for that. Great job!

I love your videos man, but I'm an Anglophile. Great Britain is the US's best friend by far. Glad you got to see this Patty Loveless video. Patty is truly one of the best singers in the world. She belongs right up there with Dolly, Loretta, Tammy, Reba. Just limitless talent that transcends even Country music. I hope you check out her other songs\videos, such as Lonely Too Long, Don't Toss Us Away, as well as her covers of Classic Country Songs. She's indescribably versatile and talented.

Our Family was from the hills & hollows of Kentucky. My dad worked in a coal mine. There were no jobs & even the police wouldn't come out in those hills! Even people like Dolly all had shacks. They would definitely drink bitters & all, including children would sing, dance & play instruments. That's all their was to do! Patty is the one who harmonizes with Vince Gill & sometimes Ricky Scaggs!!

Patty Lovelace loves sad country songs & so does Miranda Lambert. They met on a tour or something & hit it off. Miranda was in a hotel and wrote a song specifically hoping Patty would sing it with her on her album & she did. The only version I've heard was live in some bar. It's called Dear Diamond!! It's beautiful!! Maybe we can get you to pull that one out!! ❤💯
