Patty is indeed a coal miner’s daughter as well from Pikeville, Kentucky. Patty grew up in Elkhorn City in Pike County until her family moved here to Louisville when Patty was 11 years old in order for her dad to get treatment for black lung disease from coal mining. Patty’s dad died from black lung complications in 1979 when Patty was 22 years old. Everything that Patty sings about in this song is so real from her true life experience, and her emotions and pain really show in her singing.
Why Harlan? Why not Elkhorn City?
Because Darrell Scott wrote it. He meant that the experience is very personal and relatable to Patty, but the story is actually inspired by when Darrell Scott went back to Harlan with his father as a boy.
In all my years of listening to country music I am dumbfounded that I've not heard this song from Patty. Hers is one of the best voices out there. It's a shame that "pop country" today is what people think of rather than the gritty story telling by amazing vocals such as this song. Well done guys!

Patty Loveless is a first cousin to Loretta Lynn and her younger sister Crystal Gayle! Patty’s dad and Loretta’s mom were siblings! Patty’s maiden name was Ramey! Loretta and Crystal’s dad was also a coal miner but in Butcher Holler, Kentucky! I love all three of these ladies! I’m from the Pacific Northwest!
They are NOT first cousins. They are distantly related.
My great-grandfather was one of the local leaders during Bloody Harlan. A lot of his family had moved there a decade or two prior, and sure enough, few of them left alive. Most died of Black Lung from the mines if they didn’t die during Bloody Harlan. My grandma and her mother moved back to WV when my great-grandpa was imprisoned following the Battle of Evarts. I’d never heard this song before, and it really hits home that this is part of my roots.
Patty stared her career as a background singer. Then started touring with a young, new Nashville artist, Vince Gill. His debate song “When I Call Your Name” hit the radio and all where blown away at the mix of Vince’s falsetto voice, then hit with Patty’s haunting cry. Stars were born!

She sang harmony with Vince Gill when he performed Go Rest High on That Mountain at George Jones Funeral. She took over lead when Vince broke down and could only pick the lead for the song. Very touching performance.

I want to see that one. I love Allison but thought when they did Go Rest High that I wish they had done the original with Patty. She complimented Vince and Ricky so well.
Patty Loveless is one of the greatest singer I've ever heard. Another Kentucky lady. Harlan is a town in Eastern Kentucky. It's also the county seat. There must be something in the water there. Several great singers have came from that part of Kentucky
Ever been to a coal mine country? No jobs, no future. The go green people are forcing these old communities to their grave. Close the coal mines, where generations upon generations of people worked. But it’s bad. Some of the communities are okay, most coal communities are very very poor. My church built a building and multiple churches help, but it’s not uncommon to trade their kids for drugs, alcohol, sex. Homeless kids up in these mountains, literally homeless children. And the more people push to go green, the more these century old communities just whither and rot. They are thrown away like trash, they ain’t important, their very existence goes against celebrities and millionaires.

Patty covered this song. The live version of this song she tells the audience that her Dad was a coalminer and they moved so he could get treated for Black Lung. Her cousins are from the same area of KY, but a ridge or two away, Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle. Both worthy country artists of their time as well.

My grandfather started mining at the age of 7....and he started smoking also at the age of 7.....this was in southern Illinois.....Patty Loveless is one of the great voices of country music....ever.

Both sides of my family are from that area. Both my granddaddy's died of black lung. My dad moved us up to Detroit so he could work in a steel mill. Still a hard job. He worked around those hot furnaces. I grew up with this kinda music.

That's a must listen to!! Beautifully heartbreaking song. It was played at my grandfather's funeral, there wasn't a dry eye to be seen when that song started playing. It's still really hard to listen to without crying.

Those Kentucky country singers all got their own badass sound. Dwight, Patty, Keith, Loretta, Childers etc, gotta love it. I don't listen to many female singers but she's one.

My dad's family is from southwest Virginia, coal country. My grandfather mined for years. He developed black lung. He mined, probably back in the 20's and 30's. It was very primitive conditions back then, especially in the really rural areas. Dustin mentioned farming. Large-scale farming was not an option. For two reasons, as was mentioned, rough rocky terrain. And the fact that it takes farmers lots of land to yield a crop large enough to sell and to provide for their family's needs. And sometimes large families, at that. Dad had 11 brothers and sisters. There was just no money to buy the extra land needed. Miners didn't earn a great deal, and the mortality rate was extremely high. It was not uncommon for families to lose their sole source of income due to the hazards of mining. My grandparents had a garden. But, as you might imagine, it was just enough to provide for the family.
I was born in man westvirginia pretty close to the coal mine wars , my grandfather was electrocuted at a mine and my grandma and 4 kids were thrown out in the street because know one was old enough to work it was definitely one of those towns that you owed your soul to the company store.
Harlan is a real place and a true story of the author Darrell Scotts’s ancestors.
You need to hear his rendition of his song! I saw him sing it live many, many years ago.
The documentary and the movie "Harlan County War" are excellent and definitely worth watching. The documentary especially really gives you an insight as to how the miners and their families struggled and fought to get the mining companies to start taking care of their people and keeping them safe. The struggle was, and is, real and is still going on. I once took care of a miner in a nursing home where I worked and if you asked him where he was from, he'd say, without hesitation, "bloody Harlan"... oh the stories he told about growing up there.
I've watched the documentary "Harlan County USA" several times and it hits me hard every time. The music, the stories, the people. I'd highly recommend it.

I'm from a coal mining family.Both grandfathers were miners.One in Eastern Ky,the other in upper East TN.Back then,they didn't get real money,just script that could only be spent at the company store Life was hard back then. Patty Loveless is from Pikeville,Ky. A lot of coal in them mountains.This song brings back a lot of memories. Patty Loveless has that haunting voice that is perfect for this song.

Kieth you are correct the picture is Popcorn, Patty is an O.G. If your like her voice, There's always Loretta Lynn or Patsy Cline. George Jones is also an O.G. along with Hank Williams. Both my parents were from Harlan County...my mother's family were farmers with a couple teachers and one country doctor, not rich but survived. My father's father was a coal miner who died of blacklung. To keep from dying of it, my father joined the Army at 17.
How can you have never heard of Bloody Harlan, You must’ve slept through history class, and how have you never heard of Patty , the queen of Mountain Music.
The line from this song that really blows me away is "digging coal from the bottom of your grave". When I heard that, I got a severe chill!

Harlan is a very real town, Ralph Davis my husband's uncles is the man in the picture holding the colt 45 revolver standing beside the car. That was during a strike at the mine he worked in when there was a shootout with mine security when scabs were crossing the picket line during a lockout.

I really love girls reaction and Keith awareness of the history of Kentucky there are some truly great singers that have come out of that area and Patty loveless is one and yeah her roots are bluegrass and they're nothing wrong with that at all. Yes, Harlan is a real place in ky. I live about 40 mins away. Go to family reunions there. Patty sang with ricky scaggs and Vince Gill " go rest high on that mountain. She has a beautiful voice. I seen her in concert with Randy Travis and George Jones was a great concert.

This is where Patty was raised. She is Loretta's cousin. And yes that was Popcorn Sutton. He made moonshine in TN, KY, WV, as well as North Carolina. He is a legend. When they busted him the last time he paid his fee right there with the cash in his pocket. He committed suicide. He already knew he was in the last stages of lung cancer. They found a hand written contract he has his wife sign before marriage that she would give him H any time he wanted. 😂😂 I know a relative of one of the Law E that was there responding to the report of his suicide. I have relatives in Owensboro. Been there a lot. Beautiful little town.
Rise Up Lazarus is another of her great songs - what a voice. And my family had several miners in it, West Virginia folk. In fact my mom's first husband - after they divorced and he remarried - was killed in a mining accident.
The sweet sounds of Bluegrass, so much country has this influences, along with rock n roll influences, blues influences all melted together into a people's music, what country music was even before country was a thing. Early OG artists were often thought of as too, bluegrass, too rock n roll, too blues for country radio. Back in the day bands like the Eagles, Lenard Skinner, Merl Haggard we thought of as non country, but are looked back on fondly as country now.

Patty Loveless put out an impressive catalog of albums. Real albums you can listen to beginning to end and really get something out of every song. I've been a fan since the early '90's when I really started listening to more than just what the radio played. She has a knack of picking a good song and interpreting it in a way that just puts you on the floor. I read once that she started off as a rock singer and credited that with helping to strengthen her voice.
She's never had many great big hits, but she never once let me down.

My favorite of hers, but she's amazing 👏 Fun fact, Before my dad died he wrote Patty's manager, c/o Grand old Opry to just get a signed pic of her, she did and wrote a Suprised letter as well. This song always hits me.I guess it does because I can relate to having a hard scraping family ,who growing up faced life with little resources to battle through difficult times.Great song delivered by a great singer and a great ensemble of musicians.
My grandparents are from Harlen ky it was like a thirdworld country back then my mom appreciate's electricity an indoor plumbing to this day. Everts to be exact also family in totz,dizney other little towns

The first time I heard this song was live at the Down from the Mountain concert that spun off the success of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Patty sang it near the end of the show. I cried, it was so powerful.

This is actually my first time hearing her version of this song, I’m a huge Brad Paisley fan and I doubt you guys would react to another version of this song. But Brad Paisley has an amazing version of this song too! His is just as traditional music wise but a little more faster paced. Love her version too, great song written.
Harland I believe was the site the Coal Mining Wars that went on and were so bloody between the unions and the coal mining companies. That was definitely one hard to plane to try and survive. If you’d want to I’d love for you to listen to Brad’s version!

My granddad worked in the copper mines in S.E. Tennessee. You rented a company house and shopped at the company store so the companies made money hand over fist. There was no such thing as safety inspections. Many a man has gone down in the mines and never came out 🥺

Harlan is a still there. I saw a video of the mines and in the early 1900s it was pure hell. Men worked on their knees digging blind. My great-grandfather got off the boat from Hungary in 1904 and went to the mines in West Virginia. Thankfully he packed up after a couple years and homesteaded in Canada. He got out alive.
