As the owner of my original Hasbro Cybertron prime from 05, everything is still solid as a fuckin rock. Including the wheel springs. He was my favorite prime and actually only prime until I got the og Armada who's arm I shattered (gps). And then when I bought LE Armada prime, Cybertron prime was finally dethroned.
For me Optimus Prime will always be…optimus prime. Yeah idc what alt mode he takes Ive lived through every major change of his design throughout my life so to me all his alts modes are equally valid
Rid '01 Prime feels like a triumph while Cybertron Prime feels like victory lap. One, the payoff of going all out on a new design approach transitioning from the Beast Era, the other, a proud display of the perfected unicron trilogy engineering.
I do like a fire truck Prime. It makes sense to me for him to have a form that represents protection and safety. Something the humans will see and know he's someone trustworthy. Which, is also why I think Sentinel Prime being a fire truck in Dark of the Moon was a superb choice. You trusted that fire truck? Whoooops!
We can't forget that the megatron figures that came out with these 2 were absolute bangers too. Complete props on the designers for making amazing leader figures for each series.
You know, considering how liberal HasTak has been with “you exist?” characters over the two years, Yellow Splendid Convoy might have a greater chance at being released than we might think.
this is also why I'm against rid2001 Prime being done as a Haslab for one, I'm not sure how you'd justify it as a haslab over a Commander and for two, if its a haslab, the odds of a Yellow Splendid Convoy redeco become less likely
One giant issue with Cybertron Optimus is that the springs in his hip ratchets are so strong that _they actually break the plastic wells around them and cause the ratchets to fail completely._ At least, that's what I've been told, but mine are just gone. It is fortunate that his center of weight in combined mode is so good because he can still stand upright despite of that, getting him to stay that way is just a bit trickier proposal.
The Takara version is in my possession as well and it’s my biggest accomplishment in terms of collecting. Just because I was able to grab it boxed from shear luck. And Toy Guy and I were talking, I’m almost 100% certain TF&RO ripped off the force chip. It’s exactly the same. Also another fun fact, the Japanese detail changes make it way more accurate.
@@DrLockdown par for the course ofc. In my video I stressed that unless you’re huge abo it the pinned in wings, I’d just get whatever you can get just to experience the fun of the figure.
Funny how I didn't get to around to watching this until now, just after they confirmed that Haslab. I never did get to own either of these growing up. RID2001, my mom had them both on layaway and lost them. She bought me the small spychanger versions as a way of saying "sorry." Cybertron Prime, I had to drop out of the collecting game due to my mom and I falling on hard times. That said, looking over the RID Prime and how amazing the original toy was, I am beyond stoked to back the Haslab. Almost as if I'm getting another chance to get both him and Magnus after so many years and after coming so close to almost having them. From the presentation video, it seems as though they've take whatever nitpicks and flaws the original had and did what they could to improve while adding the modern atriculation and engineering. All while making it like a love letter to those who loved and cherished those originals from over 20 years ago.
43:47 100% is a reference to Lio Convoy. Since Fire Convoy does exist in the G1 timeline, he is outfitted with an Energon Matrix like Lio Convoy. One of my favorite details on the toy. Love when transformers has consistent technology. So cool.
I feel that the super mode slightly goes to Cybertron. In this case, it seems like a "less is more" situation, and a beauty in simplicity. It takes an already beefy boy, and makes him a tall, imposing, born to be a leader, massive bad ass WITH WINGS, and the backpack adds more depth to the back so it isn't just flat. In my own opinion, I think that super modes that look TOO different from their base form feels like an entirely different transformer, rather than powered up. In RID's case, if I was completely unaware of RID, and I saw base robot mode standing next to super mode, I would have no idea that they are the same transformer. Cybertron on the other hand, you can immediately tell they are the same one, but is powered up and means business. The fact I can tell it's the same figure with an extremely similar robot mode, feels like I actually powered the guy up rather than turning him into something else. Cybertron Prime when in supermode actually FEELS like a Prime in all it's stature. The other while looking great, feels like a red combiner with almost no similarities to both it's own Optimus robot mode, or Optimus in general, other than head design, which we've seen many other transformers have a similar heads. Trying newer concepts and outside the box things is cool, but it doesn't always necessarily mean it worked out perfectly or executes it better than something that follows a tried and true method. This is at least why I think Cybertron edges out in Supermode, at least.
As someone who owned both as a child, there's only one winner for super mode - Cybertron. The RiD figure was just a frustrating mess to play with in super mode and would just come apart at the torso/shoulder constantly in play, whilst Cybertron was a solid unit and held together superbly. Also, not sure if I missed you mentioning a couple of extra play features for the two. RiD's ladder can extend to an absurb length and Cybertron's trailer parts can be used to make a weapons platform.
My understanding is that the chair attached the ladder of RiD Prime is compatible with Diaclone pilots as a throwback to the original Car Robots that predated Transformers.
I loved RID Prime for how unique he was for his time and I actually got into Transfomers around the Cybertron series even knowing that a childhood friend owned that version of prime back in the day. Without a doubt Prime as a Fire Engine really is a wonderful concept.

On the note of RiD (2001) I was on the TFW2005 thread for Legacy United Magmatron earlier and one of the commenters brought up Gigatron getting a new mold as well as the size difference between him and Omega Prime (2001 Optimus and Magnus' combined form) was quite noticable as Gigatron only came up to Omega Prime's waist and it got me to wonder if a more modern itneration fo the figures would have the same size differences
Something Armada and Beast Wars ingrained into me for an ideal Optimus Prime design is that he'd be the burliest of the Autobots, but shorter than the average Decepticon until he went into his super mode. Cybertron's proportions help lend themselves to that in my mind since, on a shelf, the larger head means he looks smaller than he is, and thus the super mode makes him look like he gains more mass than he does. It tricks your brain into seeing a mass shift that isn't there even in the actual show.
You know what? You’re making me want an “RID 2000 Universe” Optimus Prime figure in whatever toyline follows United. I’d love a Cybertron Optimus update (GUOP is nice but I’d love a full redo severed from Siege Magnus’s nonsense), but old Fire Convoy needs one more on the grand scheme of things. Also, if you want to know what I’d do to make Optimus fresh again- make him a Unimog (slap some storage containers on his back that contain his Ion Cannon and Energon axe), give him the Powermaster transformation, and give him the Machine Wars chest (so he doesn’t have a faux chest).
AGREED. Machine Wars in general is overdue for an update (we’ve already got Hubcap and Hoist’s head and Starscream’s body ready thanks to Buzzworthy Tow-Line and Evolution Skyquake/Dreadwing)
It's a tough pick for me for which one I think is better. RID was my first Transformers show after the Beast era and so he was the first Optimus Prime I ever saw in action but then there's Cybertron Prime with, "oUr wORlds ARe iN daNGeR!!" with the banger theme and his super mode. Both are great figures that I've love to own.
This is one of those reviews where I have both figures, grew up with both figures, and absolutely LOVE both figures and yeah I admit I have rose tinted glasses. Personally I think both are perfect.
Love them both, greatest Optimus prime toys ever in looks and playability, wish my cybertron one had its gun to really feel evened out. Cybertron prime and the whole show he came from really formed almost everything about my taste in things that I endlessly enjoy and continue to enjoy over the years and every bit of praise for it gives me great joy Something interesting is that the cybertron trailer was used only twice in the show as a weapon. A BFG to attack Starscream and Thundercracker, prime didn’t even use it against thundercracker as scattershot got the honor so that’s neat Edit:oh yeah and going back to the Brave series really enhances the enjoyment of 2000’s transformers seeing where so many concepts came from whether it be design or story
I got the Galaxy Prime from siege, and he's delightful. A few parts of the transformation are a pain, but the look is fun and makes me wanna swoosh him and shout "GALAXY CONVOY, TRAAAANSFOOORM!" It's doing something right. 😁 I'm glad the original is just as cool
The only thing RID 2001 Prime has going, at least for me personally, is the kickass super mode and the flip out cannons on the firetruck mode. Though, I never really cared much for said firetruck mode or the wonky looking core robot. As for Cybertron Prime, he has everything going for him, from the awesome proportions to the visually interesting gribled and angular fire truck mode, not to mention the flight mode and the cyber key functionality. He is straight up the definition of "toyetic" with a chunky conversion that has you making little boom and whoosh noises as you peg various parts into place. So if given the option, I would absolutely go for Cybertron Prime.
I had gotten an incomplete version of galaxy prime from a friend when I was seven. It was my favorite Optimus prime but i lost one the the foot things and the windows broke off from year on play. Late later I found a fully complete one for 40 usd. Absolute highway robbery
Dude you need an RiD Magnus. Seeing RiD Prime and Magnus in their truck modes next to each other for the first time is one of the most impactful moments of this hobby for me. Words don't do it justice
I've seen it multiple times with multiple copies in person at Michael's house. Perhaps if I find one on the cheap. Stability is my biggest issue with it.
I grew up with the Cybertron cartoon but didn't get the Optimus toy until my friend James bought it for me at TFNation 2019. Still haven't got Fire Convoy, but fingers crossed for the future.
Hope you're well! Went back home on a holiday where the one you got me has been resting for the past 10 months. Did not know how much I missed the big lug! Might have someone bring it over so I can futz with it again. Peak presence and play value.
I would love a new RID Prime, and they'll definitely do one, but it's Optimus and will always be a retail item and not a haslab, as per Hasbro’s own words. The example I always point to is Legacy Lio Prime, which the original toy wasn't even originally released in the United States unlike RID Prime.
Funny enough I used the 10% off to get a 2001 Fire Convoy for my self. Although it ended up coming without his pistol. Finally getting a Magnus for Omega Prime.
I guess the first wave of RID prime were actually takara versions and not Hasbro's take because I remember getting him the day the line launched as a per teen at Walmarts and the first time I used the missile launcher gimmick on the ladder all of them went shooting out across my room and I lost a missile lmao
Amusingly, in the US version of Cybertron's toyline, Hasbro re-issued both the RiD 2001 Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus as a 2-pack, putting these molds in the same line as Cybertron Prime Those versions might be a bit more accessible than the original 2001 release in some areas
RiD Prime's Super Mode is perfection to me because it drastically changes how he looks and it works spectactularly while still looking like Prime. Cybertron's is just kind of half assed in my opinion. Is it cool? Yes. But all they did was slap wings on him and give him some guns and shoes. He doesn't necessarily changed, it's still the exact same design. It works, don't get me wrong but it just doesn't hold up the same as Super Mode RiD Prime. And don't even get me started on the magnificence of Omega Prime.
I didn’t know a thing about RID back when I had the original toy as a kid. I always thought Primes matrix in his super mode was a little chest gun due to the molded scope detail on the panel covering it. Also, it weird that the Matrix is in his super mode and not him.
Honestly, I don't think it's needed. All it does is "fix" the proportions on the legs, but the legs on GUOP aren't bad, as he's more putting on boots and a backpack. It's not like Magnus, who benefits immensely from the longer thighs.
Don't worry about the springed wheels, for Cybertron prime, they last fine over the years, I would know I've had mine since I was born, in 2005(I lost Cybertron prime two or three years ago in the fire that burned my apartment back in 2021.)
My old Cybertron Optimus Prime hasn't aged super well. Missing pieces and the ratchets in the hips are long gone. Again, this is why I'm thankful for Siege Galaxy Upgrade Optimus Prime.
Just found the RID prime a few days ago, got him in a pair with RID ultra Magnus pretty sure I got a good deal was really worth it, still need to get the cybertron /galaxy prime
I personally really want RID01 Prime to just be a commander. Haslab is awesome but I dropped 500 dollars to own Victory Saber and Deathsaurus (convenient EBay lot that was probably my only shot) and I don’t want to spend that much again, and I have a nagging feeling that FOMO will pull me into buying it eventually
@@DrLockdownEh. Sort of. He's mostly leg.The real issue is with Omega Prime. He doesn't like to stand on its own. Say what you want about CW combiners, but at least I don't need to prop them up against a wall.
For me personally as someone who grew up with both the Cybertron Prime (traded my Armada Unicron to my friend for him in elementary school) and the RID Prime/Magnus Costo reissue set…I absolutely *hated* playing with Super Mode RID Prime. It has a lot of cool ideas, but that son of a bitch *constantly* fell apart during play, like, to a ridiculous level. The regular bot head kept pushing up the plate the super mode head sat on in combined form, the shoulders fell off a lot, and the truck often separated…I just didn’t like it. It didn’t feel fun to play with, so he usually just stood there. Granted, he did look hella cool in all mods, but Cybetron Prime *felt* good to mess with and display. You could club a kid’s head in with him and he’d still be good to go. Idk, I just miss those days of sheer toy solidity and chonk. I guess it just depends on what a collector prioritizes.
I just got RID 2001 Optimus Prime for Christmas along with Ultra Magnus, they're even better than I thought they would be and wish I had picked them up years ago. Got both from different sellers on ebay but they really are immaculate chrome is still perfect all the electronics still work the alt modes are so rock solid I'm not even sure they've ever been transformed before I got them and so complete they had instructions and little leaflet things all that's missing is the little wheel gun bit which I can live without. Optimus even had batteries still inside expiring in March 2002 still worked fine and miraculously hadn't alkalined everywhere Want to try and find Cybertron/Galaxy Force one too.
Potentially. I have wing Saber, but I'd probably want to get jetfire and Leo breaker first before than side of things. As for ultra Magnus, that'll happen as soon as I eventually get one.
I grew up with the micheal bay movies and animated designs so im used to those two designs more then these one but if i had to chose one i would go with rid optimus desighn i love the fireman esthetic but cubertron is good to 😊
@@DrLockdown it makes it so that if he stands up straight the legs don't touch or look like they are one piece, but you are right, i go back and forth on this one on what looks better.
Unrelated: just got the dna upgrade kit for gamer prime. Put short: I got it for the taillights, shoulder wheels, and gun handle, but I'll be darned if the axes (first production run bonus is a secod axe, for which I refuse to use the American spelling) arent nice as gosh diggidy darn, and large enough to be used as an actual tool for proper humans. And I thought the stock axe was sufficient. (After painting the blades, of course.)
Maybe the reason why Cybertron Optimus' mouth looks so odd is because it's a homage to Optimus Primal. Since he had a pretty similar mouth design, which also featured a retractable face plate (even though he almost never used it in the show.)
Then there’s the backwards compatibility for Cybertron Optimus with Armada/Energon Tidal Wave due to the combination ports for Savage Claw Mode are the same ones used to attach Tidal Wave’s arms. So does Cybertron Optimus now have a Nautical Wave Mode now?
For me the cybertron Optimus prime is my personal choice out of the two but RID Optimus prime isn’t that bad of a design either. The way the RID Optimus uses those missle racks as both feet and weaponry reminds me of the fossilizers and weaponizers
Personally, I like Earthspark Prime's Volvo-esque truck mode. it's still very visibly Optimus, but the vehicle mode is something you'd be more likely to see these days. anyways, relevant to the video, I personally believe both of these designs are due to a modern reimagining, and not a Limited-Release Store-Exclusive Retool like Galaxy Upgrade. I mean Proper Leader/Commander class releases like what Armada Prime got, where the Original toy was given a modern lift to really bring it back to life. Fire Convoy (RID Prime) *definitely* needs it a LOT more than Galaxy Convoy (Cybertron Prime), but both would be highly appreciated.
This is tricky for me since I love both designs for different reasons. In the case of RiD 2001? This is up there with Animated as being a perfect youthful Prime look. This is not the weary Peter Cullen-voiced Prime most people know, he's a more hot-blooded rough and tumble leader. The kind of guy that would yell out "Transform!" and get into spats with his brother and the design really shows that well. Cybertron on the other hand is basically the perfected version of the answer to the question "What if Optimus Prime could combine?". As much as Armada is my favorite base robot design? The super mode was a neat experiment that didn't click with me and Energon had of course a great combined mode but a base robot that is laughable. This is perfection. The base and super robot designs rock, the proportions are suitably beefy but don't cross that line into making him look like a brutalizing beast and of course... my nostalgia for Cybertron rings true here. So really? I love both so I'm basically decisively indecisive.

I got the Galaxy Prime from siege, and he's delightful. A few parts of the transformation are a pain, but the look is fun and makes me wanna swoosh him and shout "GALAXY CONVOY, TRAAAANSFOOORM!"
It's doing something right. 😁 I'm glad the original is just as cool
That Optimus Prime from Cybertron was the first transformer figure I ever had.
Man.. the nostalgic is very real when I look at it.
He predicted the next haslab
Dang dude. This video is underated
Lol at Todd Howard, I got the reference.
I do have the RID Optimus Prime and just bought Cybertron Galaxy Force Prime it's arriving tomorrow.
And the winner is: Legacy Armada Optimus Prime!
I have a confession to make I bought the encore a omega prime It’s still on my shelf and it’s holding together so far bit wibbly in the waist though
I had gotten an incomplete version of galaxy prime from a friend when I was seven. It was my favorite Optimus prime but i lost one the the foot things and the windows broke off from year on play. Late later I found a fully complete one for 40 usd. Absolute highway robbery
I just hope the haslab Fire Convoy fixes a lot of the issues
Dude you need an RiD Magnus. Seeing RiD Prime and Magnus in their truck modes next to each other for the first time is one of the most impactful moments of this hobby for me. Words don't do it justice
I've seen it multiple times with multiple copies in person at Michael's house. Perhaps if I find one on the cheap. Stability is my biggest issue with it.
@@DrLockdown yeah Magnus' robot mode is a bit unstable but vehicle and combined mode are too crazy
Michael has the combined mode resting on the back of his shelf because it can't stand.
@@DrLockdown dang mine is fine but i also have the Car Robots version
He's got both.
Bad luck I guess
I grew up with the Cybertron cartoon but didn't get the Optimus toy until my friend James bought it for me at TFNation 2019. Still haven't got Fire Convoy, but fingers crossed for the future.
Hope you're well! Went back home on a holiday where the one you got me has been resting for the past 10 months. Did not know how much I missed the big lug! Might have someone bring it over so I can futz with it again. Peak presence and play value.
@@6Cthebest good to hear from you again, James! Thanks for continuing to support my channel.
I did not expect to see Cyberverse Battle Class Starscream and Ratchet in this video. Tiny ratchet is so adorable lol
23:49 my childhood favourite transformers
So let me get this straight…
Rid2001 prime has a normal robot mode, a Super Mode, and then Another super mode with ultra magnus??
Yes.
So does Cybertron prime actually.
Dad's back
14:43 TJ JUMPSCARE
I would love a new RID Prime, and they'll definitely do one, but it's Optimus and will always be a retail item and not a haslab, as per Hasbro’s own words. The example I always point to is Legacy Lio Prime, which the original toy wasn't even originally released in the United States unlike RID Prime.
If fire convoy gets the commander treatment it'll be my second childhood dream toy (first being legacy armada prime)
Funny enough I used the 10% off to get a 2001 Fire Convoy for my self. Although it ended up coming without his pistol. Finally getting a Magnus for Omega Prime.
Do you think 2001 Optimus Prime will ever get a modern take?
I damn well hope so
I guess the first wave of RID prime were actually takara versions and not Hasbro's take because I remember getting him the day the line launched as a per teen at Walmarts and the first time I used the missile launcher gimmick on the ladder all of them went shooting out across my room and I lost a missile lmao
Amusingly, in the US version of Cybertron's toyline, Hasbro re-issued both the RiD 2001 Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus as a 2-pack, putting these molds in the same line as Cybertron Prime
Those versions might be a bit more accessible than the original 2001 release in some areas
Possibly.
And likely better built than the encore version.
"perhaps a haslab"
now if only hasbro didn't ban optimus prime from the haslabs
28:46 jokes on you im INTO FLAT GIR- I MEAN ROBOTS!!!
Hey doc, got a question for ya! What exactly did Macross do to the idols culture?
One of the first examples of idol anime. After that, idols became popular, eclipsing mecha.
I wish the DNA kit for the Seige GU prime was still being sold, i really underrated that guy
Honestly, I don't think it's needed. All it does is "fix" the proportions on the legs, but the legs on GUOP aren't bad, as he's more putting on boots and a backpack.
It's not like Magnus, who benefits immensely from the longer thighs.
@@DrLockdown yeah, but I always found the mode proportions really clunky, and i'm definitely a fan of the anime super robot legs of the original one.
Oh plus, it gives him a much deeper knee bend and helps out the vehicle mode's front by moving the wheels. Plus, gap fillers!
Fantastic vid as always, Doc. It just kinda hurts that I don't own either of these!
Know the feeling. Never was that happy with the red and black one.
oh i had that cybertron one as a kid, pretty sure i got it from a garage sale, since i don't remember the back pack....
another epic video! Bravo! I love these
I LOVE FIRE ENGINE OPTIMUS ITS SO HEROIC
Don't worry about the springed wheels, for Cybertron prime, they last fine over the years, I would know I've had mine since I was born, in 2005(I lost Cybertron prime two or three years ago in the fire that burned my apartment back in 2021.)
Love the 15tn Doctor cameo
Gatwa slays
@@DrLockdown Yessss!
both of these figures demand a commander class update
yo new video loved the 4 hour video on all wfc figures it was really good
If you *slightly* pull up the torso, RID01 can have a bit of an ab crunch
Also idk if it was mentioned in the review but you can peg the pistol into the right of the smaller robot's backpack for some fairly decent storage.
My old Cybertron Optimus Prime hasn't aged super well. Missing pieces and the ratchets in the hips are long gone. Again, this is why I'm thankful for Siege Galaxy Upgrade Optimus Prime.
Great VS video. I absolutely adore my 2001 RID Prime. All the modes are absolutely beautiful imo.
I would prefer they did fire convoy as a commander class
Just found the RID prime a few days ago, got him in a pair with RID ultra Magnus pretty sure I got a good deal was really worth it, still need to get the cybertron /galaxy prime
I personally really want RID01 Prime to just be a commander. Haslab is awesome but I dropped 500 dollars to own Victory Saber and Deathsaurus (convenient EBay lot that was probably my only shot) and I don’t want to spend that much again, and I have a nagging feeling that FOMO will pull me into buying it eventually
OMG he mentioned rebrickable :)
RID Prime really needs a Generations toy. As well as a Magnus to go with him.
Magnus doubly so. From what I hear, Magnus is real clunky.
@@DrLockdownEh. Sort of. He's mostly leg.The real issue is with Omega Prime. He doesn't like to stand on its own.
Say what you want about CW combiners, but at least I don't need to prop them up against a wall.
I agree with @lyokomajor, the toy itself isn't awful, just weird proportions/placement of articulation on the legs. @@DrLockdown
lol at the hbomber gag
These Primes are so cool! I’d love to see a Haslab remaster of either of them.
Optimus even had batteries still inside expiring in March 2002 still worked fine and miraculously hadn't alkalined everywhere
Want to try and find Cybertron/Galaxy Force one too.
Will this video get a follow-up comparing Omega Prime to Sonic Wing Mode (and maybe the energon combined supermodes for a laugh?)
Potentially. I have wing Saber, but I'd probably want to get jetfire and Leo breaker first before than side of things.
As for ultra Magnus, that'll happen as soon as I eventually get one.
I grew up with the micheal bay movies and animated designs so im used to those two designs more then these one but if i had to chose one i would go with rid optimus desighn i love the fireman esthetic but cubertron is good to 😊
you missed the slider on the cybertron prime on his knees that makes his stance wider.
...huh...did not know that was a thing.
Just tried it out. Dunno if I like it. Makes the knees offset from the thighs
Aren't the head wings a homage to Big Convoy as well?
Beats me. Could be, but they are kinda different
I initially planned on mentioning such, but I couldn't find photos of it online, so I assumed I was mistaken
@@DrLockdown, found an image of Tidal Wave combined with a red and Blue Leobreaker, though.
Fire Convoy (RID Prime) *definitely* needs it a LOT more than Galaxy Convoy (Cybertron Prime), but both would be highly appreciated.
your logo in the corner is covering one of the scores
Argh. Damnit TH-cam.
Think that's an overlay they have.
Man if only I could find the backpack for my Cybertron Prime
Other then that, great video as always
TF cybertron Optimus Prime is birth favorite literally
I actually have a mint in box Galaxy Convoy. That has to be one of my best con finds ever.
I want a modern RID prime so much I got a PotP Inferno and am in the prosses of tryong to mod it. can't get the head right though...
Check shapeways. There may be something there.
