I was a salesman/consultant for most of my career. I was only moderately successful because I was honest. You are correct - the truly great salesman plays on fears and emotions in general with little or no regard for the eventual outcome for his/her client. Selling facts is hard, selling emotion is easy - just look who is in the White House today. Scare people enough or promise them paradise and your are golden - tell them the truth and few will accept it.

"Because I don't want you to punish me."
*"So... you aren't sorry. You simply don't want to be punished."*
    "No. I am sorry."
*"You are sorry enough to avoid punishment."*
    "NO! I _am_ earnestly sorry!"

Easiest age to fit it in would be high school where 'humanities' (or whatever it's called now) is taught. Religion is every bit as much a part of human culture as the various artists. Educating kids about the various religions, and how to discuss them objectively, would be an important skill for them to have.

  • @andrewwood1103

    Awesome video!
this is one of my biggest issues with religion. I can't understand how a supposed all loving christian God makes all of Adam and Eve's children suffer both spiritual and physical death when
    A. they were never given the opportunity to live in God's presence and
    B. never given the opportunity to partake or not to partake of the tree of knowledge.(assuming the story ACTUALLY happened)
Don't the scriptures repeatedly state that sons shall not pay for the sins of their fathers, nor the fathers for the sins of their sons? (Deuteronomy 24:16 , anyone?)
I like how most Christian's accept that this life is an even playing field when in all actuality, we got gipped big time. why would I even want to live in God's presence forever? If I could have a 30 day trial or your soul back guaruntee, I'd be all over that. At least then I could make an informed decision..

It is said Jesus died to forgive our sins. But he didn't forgive them; he just bought our debt and demands our compliance or he will punish us for that debt -- a punishment unspeakably disproportionate to whatever debt we owe.
And if some Christian of one of the "feel good" denominations wants to tell me I know nothing and that Christianity isn't about eternal punishment of the damned, save your breath until after you get the other Christians to agree with you. No matter what opinion I have on the matter, there is a subgroup of Christians who will say: see, if that is what you think you obviously know nothing at all (and in direct contradiction to most other Christians).

I have another reason for the "salvation" doctrine. We don't have total free will. There are people that, without rules and fear of punishment, cannot avoid anti-social behavior (the so called "sins").
Dedicating oneself to a religion (getting "saved") is an attempt to control embarrassing personality traits.
Or, conversely, the preaching of the need for salvation is an attempt to control those whom have undesirable personality traits.

  • @RustyTube
    @RustyTube 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

They don’t just have a _desire_ for salvation, they have a _salivation_ for salvation. ;)
Anyway, my objection to Christianity is not so much that they want salvation (after all, if you believe you’re going to live forever, it is natural you want to spend your eternity in happiness of sorts), but that they expect a _vicarious_ salvation. In other words, they can do all kinds of nasty things and do not have to move a finger to correct it, they just had someone do it all for them, all they have to do is accept it. That is just _sick!_

That's probably why his priests copy his example! 🤢🤮
Don't forget the sacrifice of a virgin girl in the Old Testament.
      Judges 11 NIV
29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites. 30 And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, 31 whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”
34 When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, “Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.”
36 “My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites. 37 But grant me this one request,” she said. “Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.”
38 “You may go,” he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. 39 After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.
From this comes the Israelite tradition 40 that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

If there was a god, and that god is smarter than all of us, he should understand the nature of evidence, of what sort of evidence should be required in order for us to consider something as a reasonable belief, and then could only create a world where that sort of evidence is provided for things that he expects you to believe. If a god expects you to believe something based on bad evidence and he is the only who put you here and set up the rules by which standards of evidence are good or bad, than that god is an idiot or corrupt and immoral. If you know that someone cannot understand something, how preposterous would you be to punish them for not understanding something that you know they are not capable of understanding?

Actually incest is relative, but isn't in the bible, it's in the Book of Jubilees, where it is said that Cain left mom and dad, Adam and Eve, with his sister Awan after having killed Abel, and that's where Enoch came from. And then when Eve was 130 years old, she gave birth to Seth. Six years later came his sister Azura, which in time became the mother of Seth's children, namely Enos, for the bible only lists the first born of each lineage (that of Cain and that of Seth), the girls and the rest of the multiple kids (after all there was no birth control back then) are apparently not worth mentioning.

In my most Christian era I was not a bible literalist. It is too difficult not to run in horror if you take it literally, if you want to maintain a belief that god is good and perfect.

Peter J. Hart That's beautifully written. But it's vague and lacking substance. I'd be interested in hearing more. Unless you're happy being pithy sans heft.

This is in reference to your arguments from 3:00-10:27. Either that glass is tinted or your HOA rules are over the top.

I'm prolly just dumb but this is what I took from the video: that somehow Judaism and Islam are more tenable spiritual assertions? Hopefully, I'm mistaken here because if the Genesis story isn't literally true--whether Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic, then I would deduce all 3 religions are fallacious according to this context....

There is also the theory that god created a woman name Lilith first then after Lilith left the garden Eve was created.

Regarding the eternal life thing and not knowing if that would even be desirable... For most people it doesn't matter what eternal life would actually be like because they're not smart enough to think that far ahead or they just assume that eternal life and eternal youth are the same thing. They're not.
You might have eternal youth but nothing ever really promised that. You could continue to age which would suck. I think people already live too long as it is because after a while quality of life is so poor that people actually want to die. Younger people can't really understand this until they too reach that point where their quality of life is that bad.
The majority of people judge how good a life is based on the quantity of years lived but the longest life doesn't necessarily equal the best life. The quality of life is what matters.
If I could live out an eternity as a healthy, fully intact, 21 year old without ever getting any older and never having to feel pain again, then I'd be all for eternal life. If I have to continue to get older with the same health problems getting worse and worse the older I get, fuck it I'd rather die than live forever. There's no point in living forever if you have to suffer eternal pain.
All this being said, I have an easier time believing that the entire universe was sneezed out of the nose of a being called The Great Green Arkleseizure. You should all live in perpetual fear of The Coming Of The Great White Handkerchief. Yes it's ridiculous but it's no more ridiculous than any other religion.
