    Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He
    said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in
    God?"
    He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He
    said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said,
    "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I
    said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said,
    "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or
    Northern Liberal Baptist?"
    He said, "Northern Conservative
    Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes
    Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said,
    "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"
    Northern
    Conservative†Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern
    Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said,
    "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I
    said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.
    That was from Emo Phillips, and one of my all time favorite jokes.

    Support is well deserved because the videos are excellently produced and the text is always will written.

    I remember when a Christian friend asked me to read that book. I’d heard enough about it to know it was bogus, but I agreed. It was so easy to trash the horrible arguments and stories in the book. I sent him a whole list of references. Remarkably, he took them somewhat seriously. He still hasn’t decoverted, but he’s come a long way. Maybe one day he’ll take the final step.

    I don't believe Strobel was ever an Atheist in any purposeful way. He plays the "former atheist" card because it plays well and is lucrative. I was given his book several years ago, which contained a Forward describing what caused him to begin this "investigation" in the first place....centered around his wife's growing faith. In this forward he doesn't really describe himself as an atheist, as someone who came to a logical conclusion about the existence of god. Instead he described himself as someone who hadn't put much thought into the subject.

    • @Dexx1s
      @Dexx1s 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the thing about the term atheist. It doesn't say anything about why you don't believe in a god. So he's able to use the term in a deceiving way but still have it be valid.

    people who apologetically say 'god had to work with the times' or some variant think they are somehow sidestepping this issue.
    a personal, loving god could never have allowed humans to normalize shitty behavior.

    • @FakingANerve
      @FakingANerve 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And it's also sidestepping the concept of a timeless deity. If it were timeless, why exactly would it need to "work with the times?" It's nonsense. It's an admission that their god concept shifts with society, and that alone negates the idea of a timeless, all-knowing deity, and the concept of objective morality as well.

    Yes- reasonable to give 3 reasons the Bible is not inerrant/fallible: time lag in writings (witnesses becoming writers full of faulty recollections and wishful thinking); lack of both sides presented in the parsing of all sacred writings (church decided what would be canonical vs. not accepted); translation and language problems (interpretation). Looking forward to your next chapter.

    As was mentioned a few comments back, "hearsay" was misspelled as "heresay". I saw two other spelling/fonting errors: The word "altar," as in an altar for worship was spelled "alter" and when Brian said the word "geography" the font read "geology". I only decided I'd better keep track of them after I saw the second one, and figured you were doing it on purpose, and were maybe going to throw a quiz at us at the end. Excellent piece, as always.

    The various anonymous writers of the NT were as divided and conflicted as modern believers. The very Greek ideas that give the NT its flavour were very foreign to the place Jesus supposedly lived and the religion that Jesus was part of, namely Judaism. It is also interesting to note that the Pharisees were a small group and none were living and operating in the area Jesus supposedly had his "ministry" in. Yet he was supposedly plagued by Pharisees.

Perhaps the most obvious is the vehicle sounds starting about 5:34 for around 30 seconds. Then again about 6:55 there is idle or revving noise for about 30 seconds, and finally (a bit more muffled, like a lawnmower or plane) starting about 9:51 and coming in and out for almost the next 3 minutes.

      That's another inconsistency in religion because the answer is both yes and no. God is an immortal being which means he can't be destroyed but at least with Greek and Roman gods, there is a way to kill a God. How can they be immortal if they can be killed?
      Actually that seems to be a problem within all fiction. Immortal means can't die but yet every immortal creature can die. Vampires are immortal but they have a long list full of things that can kill them. Really it just seems to be a long life span but there's a big difference between long life span and can't die. Immortality is like the one plot hole that writers keep using despite the fact it makes no sense what so ever.

      Religion can best be compared to a virus which has gained immunity, over thousands of years, to the contradictory gains in knowledge and morality that should have destroyed it. Looking at American Christianity of 200 years ago, which espoused slavery, to Christians of today (who usually don't), you can see that religion at first opposes, denies, and then moves though allowing and, ultimately embracing those things that once should have killed it. Eventually, some purveyors will even claim that their religion CAME UP with those things (example: there are Muslims - I think Dr. Usama Hasan is one - who claim the Koran, read correctly, taught evolution before it was accepted today). In a few years their apologists and theologians will have completely reinterpreted their holy book and it'll become mainstream among their faithful, and they'll probably claim to have invented the theory! Sadly, this god in the mind cannot be destroyed. Like polio, I hope it becomes vanishingly rare, but never will it be completely gone.

The sports teams, basketball and softball, were a lot of fun and I could bring my friends along. WTF happened? We had "electric" mormons doing pschedelics trying to harmonize. • @Jarb2104

      That's one of the things religion relies so much on. The fact is, religion creates communities where you are assured everyone thinks the same as you do, there is nothing better than echo chambers where everyone has fun and pats themselves on their backs.
      But that is why, also, when you come out of religion, you search for new communities, and find friends in places where people gather for their hobby, their interests, or just to spend time together, like discos.

    • @GeatMasta
      @GeatMasta 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jarb2104 That religion does this is generally a good thing, because it brings people together and keeps them out of cults. Even an echo chamber isn't necessarily bad; hell, your example of clubs based on hobbies are just echo chambers based on the idea that said hobby is cool.
      Furthermore, what if they can't find any such communities because they're all feminist echo chambers and the person gets chased out, what then?

      I never said that, in that regard, religion was bad, or even that echo chambers were a bad thing, no where in my statement I am criticizing or advocating for anything in it.
      I am just stating something religion relies on to thrive, and how can it be shifted to different kinds of communities, for those who leave religion behind. Specially when the community they rely on, is heavily build on something that is no longer part of their beliefs.

    Why are those indoctrinated into their religion incapable of recognising it?

Was he so inept that interpreting those words to suit your present narrative be a perversion of his words and therefore blasphemous? 🤭

    God is transcendent: he is not the root of a polynomial with rational coefficients. But God is imaginary. He cannot be "i" (such that i²=-1) since i is algebraic, not transcendent. Therefore God is the product of i and a transcendental number, e.g. π. So we have: God = iπ. So we can say that God=ln(-1) (plus a constant).

    Atheist meetings? The religious already think that we hold secret meetings some where worshiping Satan. Why would would you say that even as a joke? Someone's going to hear that, take your statement at face value as a literal statement of fact, and make references to it that an Atheist admitted to attending meetings with other Atheists.
    At least do air quotes when you say stuff like that. Or have those words on the screen making it a little more obvious that you're joking. You're trying to convince others to convert to Atheism but if you're including jokes that you have to already be an Atheist to understand what's the point of including them at all?
    Unless of course you're just trying to make videos that are just entertaining to Atheists in which case what's the point of these educational style videos when we already know all this stuff. I kinda of preferred the other style of videos that was just for entertainment purposes because that's where subtle jokes like Atheist meetings really would of worked. But here it just seems out of place.

    Everything that is believed to be known about god comes from one source, the bible. If the statements concerning your innocence from the only witness to your case can be proven to be false and shown to be ignorant to the circumstances surrounding your case then that's it my friends, check and mate, end of story, full stop. Yet it lives on. Kind'a like our current president.

    But... but... the bible is the word of god, because the bible says that the bible is the word of god. >_>
    Actually, now that I think about it I can't recall, is there a literal verse in the bible that claims that it is the word of god? Or have the religious always assumed that it is because somebody else simply told them that it is?

    • @misterdeity
      @misterdeity  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      stellarfirefly There is only a verse saying the scriptures are edifying or some such thing. If I'm remembering correctly.

    • @SL33VE
      @SL33VE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      stellarfirefly All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
      That's as close as it gets, methinks. I'm assuming "all scripture" includes only what Timothy considered to be God's word. It seems it would be pretty arrogant to deem his own words as such, thus excluding them. I do like the term "God-breathed" though. It makes me wonder about her lung capacity and the possibility of divine halitosis.

    • @teavea10
      @teavea10 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      2 Tim 3:16 isn't enough. A verse is needed that says God can't lie or can only tell the truth. Look at Titus 1:2, Heb 6:18, (God can't lie); and Psalms 119:160, 2 Sam 7:28, (God is truthful). Now the Bible is circular in stating that what it states is truthful.

  • @ChipArgyle
    @ChipArgyle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We have God's holy word? All religions can be easily deconstructed at their outset. What's the truth claim of Judaism and Christianity? Simple, we have a book written by men who were inspired by the Abrahamic God.
    Question: did the authors say they were inspired by God, or did God say he inspired the authors? Big difference. One could be believable. The other is hooey.
