- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Cake. As I mention in the video, I've been a Cake fan since I was in college, as their infectious funky lo-fi rock style/sound caught my ear and I've been a fan ever since. Also, for anyone confused about the selection for this episode - with all of the serious stuff happening in our world these days, I figured it was time to have a little fun, and Cake's music features lighthearted jams with a sense of humor in the mix and is VERY fun to play/explore - so let's dive in!
The ideas in this lesson are indeed simple/basic, but it's the interplay that occurs between the acoustic and electric guitars in Cake's music that is of particular interest, not to mention all of those tasty (and authentic) twangy guitar riffs and licks, which evoke sounds typically found in classic soul, R&B, rockabilly, jazz, mariachi, and many other styles of music - but you can find all of these styles and several others hiding in Cake's seemingly random output of music.
The chord-based ideas shared in this lesson came from an assortment of Cake albums, and include tracks such as 'You Part The Waters,' 'Stickshifts And Safetybelts,' 'Let Me Go,' 'Palm Of Your Hand,' 'Satan Is My Motor,' not to mention hitting the ultra-mellow ballad 'Mexico' and emulating the dreamy pedal steel parts on guitar using a slide.
Needless to say, if you're a Cake fan or just a player searching for some new ideas to practice/borrow, not to mention shaking things up in your musical world with some "left-field" music and ideas from Cake - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!
I was fortunate enough to be able to share the stage with them in Nashville about 15 years ago… By far one of the tightest, cleanest sounding live bands I have ever heard. They sounded as good or possibly even better than the records. Everything that the guitar player does is fantastic… Obviously he can play, but you can tell that he is there solely to serve the song structure.
And their horn section did not have the intonation problems that most horn sections have. Not sure if it was just a good day or they are always like that, but they were watertight as a frogs butt.🤠
Thanks for a great video, Dave!
Opened for them at a festival and i was stunned at what they were able to reproduce live what I'd heard on their albums. Incredible band!
Let Me Go! Cake is awesome. Their tongue-in-cheek attitude belies their sophistication. One of my favorite bands.
Cake is it's own genre. ^-^
Thanks for this, David. Been a fan of Cake for a long time. I love the "you don't have to be a virtuoso to write a great song." You can make things interesting in a lot of ways, as Cake proves. Hell of a rythym section , too. I feel no guilt for liking them a lot!
What a good surprise. Thanks!
I LITERALLY just went on a Cake catalog journey earlier today... They have always been a guilty pleasure of mine as well!
I heard them a couple times at the supermarket and had to Shazam it to see who it was and their name kept popping up.
Hella original.
Hella great!
Thx for the videos, Dave.
Don’t feel guilty. Cake is bad ass
I see the Cake picture in the corner. Great video as always David.
Wow .. Thanks... some new ideas...Your knowledge of music is extradentary .Let alone remembering how to play all this stuff.
Awesome description of this band! Spot on! Even if you don’t know the band, ya somehow like ‘em!
👍🇦🇺
Love their version of I Will Survive.
Thanks for Cake!!
I can't tell you how much I loved this video - I absolutely love CAKE and can't understand how underated they are - especially Greg Brown and his amzing guitar riffs. You play them so effortlessly (which is really annoying!!) - I could spend my life just learning those amazing guitar parts - more more more videos on CAKE please. Fantastic stuff mate.
Awesome job as always.
Thanks David.
superb, I am a big cake fan, their arrangements are very unique ..they let everyone speak and have space ,counter melodies all over the place.
the trumpet is used so well .
the song frank sinatra has a wonderful guitar solo with exquisite timing.
thanks for all your videos and it's great you do different stuff to broaden everyone's horizons.
Going The Distance!
Love cake!!! Thank you
I haven't even watched the video yet it just came up on my feed but Cake is my lady's favorite band. We live near Santa Cruz CA and they have come by here a few times. I always loved the the solo on I Will Survive even when I heard it for the first time.
100% agree with your intro Dave! 👍
Saw them at Ommegang Brewery. Great performers, great show. You can find a few videos of that show on youtube.
Awesome Episode Dave! Cake was deffo an influence on my early years and what a great taste in musicality. Kudos!
Love Cake. Love this episode.
Love Cake. Been a fan for a long time.
First in to tell DB he’s awesome! 👏
At least you had something to say. There’s no lesser form of communication than “First”. Except maybe “Second!”
@@waynecanning4122 I always get something out of these from Dave, but admittedly the chord plays and the pockets have been favorites.
@@paulcasilio1119 Oh for sure. I’ve been sitting here playing that opening Let Me Go riff for the last ten minutes.
Guilty pleasure is perfect description.
Great band from a top tier educator.
Thank you brother.
I always thought that term was kinda funny. I mean, we shouldn't feel guilt/shame about the music we enjoy 😄
The first Cake song I ever heard was Sheep Go To Heaven. I heard it on the radio in the late 90's and was hooked.
Fantastic!
WOW I played the pedal steel part on CAKE’s recording of “Mexico”. Nice approximation with the bottleneck slide -very tricky!
Love the slide, never seen diagonal slide like that Magic for sure, Mexico is country
This is my first time seeing one of your videos, and I enjoyed it. I gather you and I may not have much other music in common, but I love Cake so much, and you did them justice. The only quibble I would have is your calling them a "guilty pleasure." There's nothing guilty about enjoying music! And besides, I think their sound is deceptively simple. If it was easy to sound like them, and to put out several hit songs, a bunch of great albums, and maintain popularity over multiple decades, other bands would have done it. But absolutely no one sounds like Cake, and very few bands have maintained a following that still looks forward to their new music for that long. Here's hoping their long-promised seventh album gets finished someday soon!
What Cake is 🍺’ski is ORIGINAL!🤘
me like. now do xtc!
I love that band!
The distance and short skirt/long jacket are the ones I heard on radio, awesome quirky mainstream indie out there all at all the same time.
Thanks for this. Looks like I need to check all their songs. The are very Weezer like. Very open minded, as seen by them doing I will survive by Gloria Gaynor and also war pigs by black Sabbath. Very cool
Clever lyrics too. Really like their ironic, sarcastic take
Stryper
Huge fan of cake.
Not familiar at all with Cake, but this was cool, will definitely have to check out this band. Thanks.

Hey David have you done a video on Blackfoot? Not sure if you are a fan of them or not.
Blackfoot is coming!
: )
@@LateNightLessons awesome!
I heard you reference Cake in one of your other videos recently and was wondering if you would eventually do a Chords Of installment.... and here we are! Funny i just recently came across the same song The Distance late night and was like "Who is this?" Became an instant fan for much of the same reasons you discussed in this video... Love the quirky tunes with the horns thrown in... Another great take my man!!!
Hey are you a Mars Volta fan?
Always thought they were cool. One thing I noticed is on their recordings there is no reverb or delay or any effects very dry. Not meant to be derogatory.
Pete Blakk solo licks lesson Pete Blakk was in bands before and after king diamond. I know you love the guitarist Jack Starr from Jack Starr Burning starr band which they have a lot of albums which you haven't made a lesson about Jack Starr
Cake sound a bit like later Captain Beefheart
second
David Brewster.... that blinking light on your amp is super annoying. I actually quit watching your lessons for 2 years because of it. I think you are the best instructor on You Tube, but that blinking tuning light just ruins it. Can you put a piece of Cloth over it, or use a Camera angle that doesn't show it? No matter how much I try to watch your hands, or listen, my eyes Always go back to that stupid blinking light.
