I think if they quit prosthetics and just put people in the outfits and gave them nice hairdos the costumes would work.
Derpy PotatoFox yeah, just giving them really exaggerated makeup without prosthetics could work for a lot of characters. Ursula is a big one that comes to mind, just go full drag queen with her and embrace the original roots of her design
I agree to both of you. Makeup goes a long way in altering your appearance. This is coming from a young actress just graduating from youth theatre.
Yeah. Kids have a pretty high suspension of disbelief. If the costume looks right, they’ll have no problem connecting the character to it. My friend was just disney bounding as Anna and so many little kids approached her thinking she was Anna lol.

With Bo Peep all they gotta do is use a real person’s face instead of a mask and do that make up that people use to make themselves look like dolls and use those contacts that makes their irises bigger.

And maybe add a lot of highlight and shine to make it somewhat reflective-but I really don’t know why they don’t just use makeup lol

This choice probably has to do more with the face vs mask character hierarchy. If bo peep was a face character, her pay would,be different - possibly higher than Woody, Buzz, and Jessie - who are the primary characters of the franchise. That wouldn’t make sense internally, and also be more work/time/money on a Disney’s end to find and train face level actors who also need to speak, have answers of backstory for kids, and have specific facial gestures. It’s very doable with makeup, but wouldn’t make sense within the character-in-park hierarchy.
Am I the only one who likes the Lumiere face character from Tokyo? Yea? Thought so lol but hands down the Fairy Godmother is the creepiest; and just think she used to be in the US Disney parks too back in the day

Don’t get me wrong. I like the Tokyo one but they need to rethink the face and do like they do with Jack. Use the actors mouth and make it oversized. Don’t paint the mouth under the mouth of the performer. Hahaha.
Oh was that supposed to be a mouth under the actor’s mouth? I thought it was just an extreme contour to accentuate his lower lip, which works really well 20+ feet back onstage with the bright light of the sun on him.

tbh with Bo Peep, they should've just gotten a normal actor, she really doesn't need the mask, you could argue she's gonna stand out since all her friends are face-mask characters but again, it seems she only appears in parades? or maybe few and select meet and greets, this is by far the worst face-mask character I've ever seen

And since things have improved throughout the years, they might change Woody, Buzz, and Jessie into face characters by adding them some makeup to make them look more like plastic since they are “toys”. The main reason why Woody, Buzz, and Jessie are fur characters at the parks is because they made their heads look more like plastic to make them look like “toys”, which in fact as we all know, Woody, Buzz, and Jessie are toys. However, if they changed them into face characters, they can add some make up on their faces to make them look more like toys as long as they don’t make Buzz look like “Mrs. Nesbit”.

I came back to this video after finding out Bo Peep would be returning to Disney Parks to promote Toy Story 4. I immediately thought of this video and said “I hope they make her a face character.”

Bo could have been a face character for sure. Doll make up isn't even all that hard, water based cosmetic paint gives you a nice china doll complexion in two layers. Maybe they didn't want to both with the makeup.
I think it was an attempt to bring in the japanese trend of "kigurumi" characters which would explain the "fabric skin", but it is just so poorly done.
Like the commentator says with both of them, the eyes look incredibly dead, their facial expresions look unnatural and downright creepy. Even I get a little uncomfortable by looking at them.
I feel like with Jessica, if she was a face character, you run the risk of some inappropriate behavior from some men. I mean, the normal princess (most of whom’s outfits are pretty modest) deal with that kind of stuff already, as some cast members have shared in the past.

So Jessica Rabbit...if she was made into a face character, she would need to be “disney appropriate”. As long as she is a cartoon, with fabric skin, a plastic face, Disney can get away with making her look true to the movie. BUT the moment they make her into a “real human”, they will need to re-imagine her to make her more family friendly.
Well at ONE time they LOVED Rojer Rabbit. They had a ride for him,he was in everything, he had his own show, and hell he was even going to have his own park. On top of which on the once called Pleasure Island on Downtown Disney Jessica Rabbit had her own store. Everyone knows what she looks like. She still has pins and Tshirts and ariel is still half naked as well as Jasmine and Tink shows off the same amount of skin and clevage. There is, in my own mind, no point trying to make it more childish BUT coming from the standpoint of knowing actual princessess and their horror stories for HER OWN safety I would have devised a pervert free costume. Maybe make it have a flesh undershirt as they do with versions of Ariel at times or cover it up more like Jasmine. This is only for the sake of actual sexual harassment that is upon these ladies not for the sake of the poor children who "cannot bare" to see some midriff or cleavage.
Jacinda Diaz yeah, the other princesses have bared a lot, but the difference is that Jessica Rabbit was drawn to BE sexy, and to be sensual, a caricature of how female sexuality is exploited in Hollywood. She is a pinup girl, so when translating that into an actual human, you basically get a playboy playmate. As much as id love to see Play Boy bunnies hoping around, it just wouldn’t fly. The long sleeves for the princesses is part of their winter wear. Of course, lately all costumes have gone through a re-design to make them even more “appropriate”, such as Jasmine who is now completely covered. A PG version of Jessica could be made, but the whole point of Jessica is this sex symbol.
They’d have to do a lot of reimagining here. I saw Roger Rabbit in theaters as a kid but the focus is really on Roger and his wacky antics. They don’t really need to have a face character for her all that much. I do have to say I’ve always wondered how they got away with a pg rating when there are other things besides Jessica Rabbit that should have warranted a higher rating
I agree Jessica should be more family friendly and not be exposed as much. Men have suffered to because of this.

When they release Toy Story 4, I’m hoping Bo Peep becomes a face character in the Disney parks on the film’s release. I know they made her an atmosphere character to make her look like a doll, which she is a doll, but it would be a good change if they changed Bo Peep into a face character.

The masks for Bo Peep and Fairy Godmother look like those 80s style plastic halloween masks that came with the costume that was really a glorified trash bag.
Those mask look like someone from the Purge or a heist might use than for Disney purposes
The Jack Skellington costume is creepy. I've seen fan-costumes which are far better then the ones in the parks.

In relation to the captain hook costume, when I was 6 my parents took me to Disney for my birthday, and at one point we went to a captain hook meet and greet but he for some reason just terrified young me so I began crying, but this was actually right after Peter Pan and Wendy's meet and greet had just ended and as they were leaving they saw me and came over to ask why I was upset, and then I got a picture with the two of them even though their meet and greet was technically over

I think the best interpretation of a live-face Captain Hook was Dustin Hoffman in Hook. if they base the look off of that (with only minorly-exaggerated prosthetics, or simply prosthetics to make the actor look more like Dustin Hoffman from 1991), it would probably be fine, no real reason to use an articulated head in that case!

@Maximus Prime Hook isn't Disney, no, you're absolutely right. It was directed by Spielberg and produced by Amblin Entertainment (which is Universal, I think?) But seeing as they seem rather inspired, shall we say, by the Disney look in that movie (the original illustrations of the book and the descriptions in the book, especially for Hook and Peter, doesn't match the Disney version), they could probably get away with something similar to what Hoffmann had. Probably.

I came here to say the same thing. His costume has always bothered me.
I actually like the Jack Skellington costume. It's one of my favorite costume character designs. He's one of the few costume characters i can think of that wears a mask but can also talk. I can't really see how else to do Jack since he is a very expressive character and what they came up with I thinks works very well. He still not nearly as creepy as most of the costumes on this list though.

And the sad thing about Jessica Rabbit’s current state at the parks is that makeup artists like jbunzie have shown it’s possible to create a look that accurately represents the character without falling into a creepy uncanny valley of plastic and cloth skin.

- I actually prefer the face actors over the creepy giant masks for the villain characters, they just need to cut back on the prosthetics. I actually prefer the versions from the Hocus Pocus show.
- You wanna see a creepy Ursula, go look up the older version of the Tokyo DisneySea Little Mermaid show. It's giant face and hand puppets that came out form above the audience, it was freaky and amazing.
With Jessica Rabbit, it's understandable why they didn't make her a face character. The parks likely didn't want to have a woman wearing a heavily padded bra and somewhat revealing clothing walking around with young children present, probably because some dumbass parents would complain. So the solution was to not show an actual person, which could possibly also be due to the fact that Disney park face characters, women in particular, get hit on quite often, and I'd imagine a Jessica Rabbit would be a likely target. Still looks hella creepy though.

I actually prefer the earlier Captain Hook, he looked more like the film version. For the new Hook, it looks like they tried to pack too much face into a tiny head. It would make the costume x10 better if they gave him his long hair, rather than a weird goofy looking curled bob haircut. Personally, I like the stage version of Hook because it beats having a normal actor, or a Hook that can't talk - he's not meant to be seen up close anyway.
I'd love to see an evolution of Hook. Hook was there at Disney opening as just a guy in a pirate suit! You can see him in your Donald video!

I’m so excited you found a picture of those rainbow metallic Epcot outfits. Those were one of the things I vividly remember (and there are photos of somewhere) of our family trip as a kid to Disney in ‘87 or ‘88.

Ever seen the Three Good Fairies at Disneyland Paris? They're basically just three more Fairy Godmothers from Tokyo. All so unsettling.Or Vanellope? Pretty much most humans or humanoids that are not face characters.

I actually really like the Ursula from Voyage of the Little Mermaid. Her glowing eyes remind me of that scene in the film where it shows Ariel swimming and then slowly transitions into her eyes. It’s scary, yes, but I love it.
