I got interested in learning Japanese in my early 30's. I started studying kanji and kana but the spoken part was a challenge. So I went to a lot of sushi bars to talk with the sushi chefs. I found that won me a lot of approval (and free sushi). Subsequently I studied with Japanese exchange students and eventually went to Japan for a short time. After three years I felt pretty proficient and answered an ad looking for a Japanese translator. I applied for the job and to my amazement, I got it! The company was NEC America in New York. I worked there for 23 years and made many trips to Japan. So, what started out as a curious hobby turned into my lifelong career.
There was no TH-cam back when I started so instructional videos like this are fabulous learning tools.
Needless to say I love Japan, the country, the culture, the history, the language, the people and don't get me started on the food. The one thing about Japanese as compared to English it is a very logically organized language. I cannot imagine how difficult English is to learn for a foreigner. So, if you want to learn Japanese I say: "Ganbatte (頑張って!"

is that so? I'm Japanese, but my high school Japanese teacher taught me that English is more logical than Japanese. In English papers, there is a clear structure in which nouns are modified later, but in Japanese papers, this is often not so clear, so you end up not knowing what you want to say. is.

Thank you for posting this! I'm in my mid 30's now and just started learning Japanese a few months ago. I always wanted to learn a second language and always loved Japanese culture, but never had a reason to learn the language. I still don't have a good reason other than my own interest, but I'm committed and reading this makes me hopeful it will lead to an unexpected adventure like yours.

I don't think this video is part of a series or playlist (you can correct me if I am wrong).
Anyway, if you are a complete beginner, this video is not for you.
Even then, you can still use this video very effectively for your learning purposes, which I am doing.
Write down the words you don't know, if you are good at memorising memorise, if you are not then say it out loud 3-4 times. After that, watch the video or part of the segment again and see if you start to understand, maybe watch the 3rd time and try to speak alongside the speakers (mimic).
I am sure you will come out of this process with newly learnt 100-400 new words, another 100-400 new words that will start to sound familiar whenever you hear these again in different example, a good listening practice and maybe even bit of speaking with it from only 12 hours of work. (Based on 3hrs video x watched 3 times = 9 hours and other 3 hours to write down the words and attempting to memorize)

Katakana is usually for foreign names and loan words, Harry Potter = ハリーポッター would be written all in Katakana for a foreign name , Hamburger = ハンバーガー written all in Katakana because it's a loan word. How do we know which word are loan words? That comes with learning vocabulary. You do not mix Hiragana with Katakana for the same word.
Hiragana can be used instead of Kanji, if you don't know how the Kanji for UP (上) but you know that it's spoken as うえ (u e) you could write it in Hiragana うえ but not in Katakana ウエ
Good morning (o ha yo u) with the Kanji is お早う or with only Hiragana おはよう
I, when referring to oneself (wa ta shi) Kanji 私 or Hiragana わたし

Japanese also has stresses to their syllables. "SUmiMAsen", ARiGAtou", "WAsabi". Also to learn pronouncing the "r" sound properly, it's the same as saying the letter "d" but softer, so you might as well teach it that way.

The podcast episodes are good. I’ve learned a lot from them over the years. However, one thing that always poses a significant drawback, at least for me, is the tone and manner in which they speak. I don’t mean casual or formal, I mean the vibe. It’s clearly made with the corporate template, which makes the dialogues, monologues and subsequent breakdowns quite inauthentic, and sometimes downright fake. Listen to it, and you’ll hear that there’s almost no realness and a lot of the time it feels artificial. There’s no one person to blame for this, it’s probably just the structure they follow, but for real, better decisions could have been made. This idea of being corporate, distant, soulless and somewhat fake, isn’t very appealing to the average person, and to someone like me who craves authenticity, it’s downright off-putting. Several other TH-cam channel have a vibe that’s more natural and closer to the Japanese, you would actually hear in Japan, but those aren’t multi-million >insert currency< companies like innovative-languages is. Let’s see what happens in the future. I kinda lean towards the belief that perhaps the artificial sounding and business-like manner of speaking will eventually fade out, maybe one day.
