Are Chinese watches any good? I've mentioned cheap Chinese watches on my channel before, often in a derogatory manner. However, many Chinese watches under 50 quid can be surprisingly good...

I’m usually not keen on Chinese watches but there was 1 I couldn’t ignore; the Seagull 1963. A little bit difficult to get a hold off, especially if you want a “legitimate” one as eBay and even Amazon has knockoffs of it but worth it if you can. It’s not cheap, even used but it looks great with the gold tone dial and a good leather strap. Feels solid too. A good watch is a good watch, no matter where it came from and the 1963 is a good one.

I have had it now for 5 years, and it is still working - and seems accurate to better than +/- 10 sec per day.
Seriously impressed with it. It looks nice enough for a daily watch, it's accurate, it's mechanical / automatic and after 5 years of use I think I can call it reliable too. I bought a Cadisen and a Starking dress watch - both for around €45 - both cane with sapphire crystal, 50m WR, solid links and end links, a high beat movement similar to a Miyota and a Seiko n36 - both have hacking and hand winding. The Cadisen also cane with resizing tools and an added leather strap (okay-ish quality) and both have exhibition casebavks. The E6B was out of alignment and the surface finish was cheap, but the crystal took a beating (I bought it as a work watch).

What you found here is that you can get products equivalent to $200 fashion watches for $20 from these Chinese sites, which is notable. At that price point, though, especially if you’re looking at chronographs, expecting anything beyond basically junk is sort of expecting a miracle. I think the more useful comparison is looking at what you can get for the same $200 you’d spend on the fashion watches. That’s where these Chinese sites really shine, because for $150 to $200 you can get watches that blow MVMT and the like completely out of the water.

Then moving up to actual quality automatic Chinese watches like Cadisen or Carnival; $50ish (which is still mind boggling cheap and impressive) are definitely worth it and you hit $75 brands and you have an actual genuine quality watch.

FYI I bought 2 Ochstin, a Chenxi and a Lige (not being able to find out anything about the watches and movement online) - expectations for the quality are low but I like the look and don't feel I am disappointed for prices all under $20.

The best is the Seagull flying wheel retrograde day date which is the most accurate mechanical watch I own. It runs like a quartz, within 2 seconds per day.

I bought a couple of super cheap Chinese watches on Amazon recently (I'm not a luxury sort of person). One was basically a DW clone for $8 and it's fine. Quartz movements are quartz movements and it's not loud. I like the cloth strap. The next one was skeletonized automatic mechanical for $30. It's a version of the Chinese Standard Movement they've been making since the 1971. It's quiet, and surprisingly, it has only lost an average of 2.7 seconds per day. The metal band looks great. The problem with it is that the movement wasn't centered in the case by a millimeter or so. I had to open it up and use bits of an appropriate material (the edges of a clear band-aid) on the plastic insert to center the movement. I think if you order this on Ali Express it's probably half the price.
I think it's kind of cool that mechanical watches are cheap and expensive. Think of this as a Communist's Rolex. It's as accurate and the design goes back to '71.

  • @donaldasayers

To add: If you want a Submariner style watch (mechanical) that's decent quality and affordable, you can't go wrong with the Invicta Pro Diver 8902B. It uses a very reliable Seiko NH35a movement. That is all.

Skmei uses snap on back covers instead screw back covers as Casio does.
In my experience, nothing good comes with a snap on back cover. Always water comes in...

I'm not at watch enthusiast, therefore I don't quite know when a brand is good or not. Just famous or not. Therefore, what do you guys think about Calvin Klein, Fossil and Swatch watches? Also, what's the best budget (about $100 but it's fine under $200) thin watch. Like as slim as possible (straps as well), also not with leather. And yes, I do care about aesthetics (just personal opinion).

    • @kennyduarte783
      @kennyduarte783 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Tiffany Josephine to answer your question, the Calvin Klein and Fossils are what are known as fashion watches. Typically they’re quartz movements that are cheap to make and you typically pay for the brand name. They aren’t great value for money usually. Plus you typically pay quite a bit for what you get, which isn’t much. Usually they’re the cheapest watch produced in China with a designer label.
Swatch is different though, they’re Swiss watches and they have a ton of different designs and have a ton of horological history, don’t have any experience with them personally but many people love them.
I personally am a fan of Seiko’s, good value for money, reliable as a Toyota, have an impressive history behind and a good Seiko would cost less then a Calvin Klein watch. Also like Casios for a working watch that can take punishment.

To me, the biggest obstacle for buying a Chinese watch is the amount of research needed (granted, the same can also be said for any other watch brand)
For example, you have to REALLY look closely at the dial, to ensure there aren't silly things like wrong spellings
There are good Chinese watches out there, but the amount of work that you need to put in to avoid the garbage ones is just a bit much
But still, for the price tag, they offer great value, especially if you are able to get a not garbage one

The real problem is how to separate the wheat from the chaff- there are so many ‘brands’ ,many items are rebranded generic designs, there can be substantial price variance for the same watch. You should check out alibaba and see the wholesale prices, it’s amazing- and they can apply any logo you want(cough, ahem...Rolex).It could be a very expensive process of trial and error to get through all this not to mention the outright false advertising. Even if review recommendations are followed, they are only contemporary opinions and don’t necessarily reflect long term ownership. But I find I can easily fall through a rabbit-hole and spend ages scrolling through the watch selection on aliexpress. But if they get it right , and honour the claims about movement,sapphire,316l stainless etc you have to question why the ‘premium’ brands are as expensive as they are, notwithstanding brand/heritage markup.

I've bought three SKMEI watches. You see watches identical to those you reviewed here, even cheaper with the SKMEI label. SKMEI actually manufactures watches, and may be responsible for your Daniel Wellingtons, though just to confuse you, they don't manufacture 100% of their watches themselves. Generally speaking their waterproof rating is either 30m or 50m. Some models use Miyota or Epson movements, but others use cheaper Chinese movements of various quality. The metal cases are alloy, finished in Stainless Steel, not solid. The backs are invariably Stainless Steel. I don't worry about straps too much as they're easy to change and I like silicone for comfort. Whether or not leather is genuine or PU, is no guarantee that it will be good or bad, in any case. Metal straps are Stainless Steel.
The best-looking one is a SKMEI 9058, whose design is stolen from a Tissot Le Locle design. The leather strap supplied felt a bit nasty at first, but it got more supple with use, and it turns out to look and feel really nice. I don't know how the quartz movement will last over the years, but it's very accurate right now. It cost me under £9 from AliExpress.
As you rightly say, the problem is not cheap watches, if you pay cheap. The problem is cheap watches if you pay expensive. Re-labelling and drop-shipping seem to be a scourge, but if you ask me, people who fall for branding deserve what happens to them. Especially when there are plenty of resources on line, including your videos, to do some research.

Can anyone recommend me a good mechanical automatic? (preferably with a winding feature)
I currently have a Fossil Grant with a Sea-Gull TY2723 movement (from the information i've been able to find, it was pretty obscure).
It's kind of meh. It runs about 1 minute per day too fast at full wind, and about a minute per day too slow as the wind run low (if it's about to run out, it crawls to a halt, understandably). It's not the end of the world. I usually set it to be 5 minutes behind true time, and re-adjust it once a week.
But I was looking for something a bit more "standard" like 20 seconds per day, or around there. Preferable shower proof, even though I do take my watch off in the shower. But just to be safe.
I'd also like a skeltonized appearance, as for me, the main focus of a mechanical watch is to appreciate all the little tiny components, so I like to be able to see them.
Other preferences: metal wrist band (i've never liked any leather i've tried) and a sapphire crystal would be nice.
