Detroit, Michigan was a fertile breeding ground for industry and the arts during its best days. The Domingos first got together in 1954 with charter members Billy Henderson, Henry Fambrough, Pervis Jackson, C. P. Spencer, and James Edwards. Edwards was the first to depart and smooth voiced Bobby Smith was recruited. Then Spencer left with George Dixon taking over and the group changed their name to The Spinners in 1961.
Their first single "That's What Girls Are Made For" on Harvey Fuqua's Tri-Phi Records went top 30 in the US and introduced the world to Bobby Smith who would be the voice on most of the Spinners recordings including this one. After a few more personnel changes, Tri-Phi got bought out by Berry Gordy and The Spinners became part of the Motown stable of artists. Excited as they were to be signed to such a prestigious label, it was not long before that enthusiasm dimmed along with their commercial appeal.
Motown responded by having the members act as tour personnel babysitters, drivers and administrative help, moving them to the VIP imprint, a third rate label. The Spinners had little success being with Motown and were more than ready to move on when their contract expired. GC Cameron, the voice on "It's A Shame" left the band and was replaced by Philippe Wynne in early 1972. On the word of Aretha Franklin they were signed to Atlantic and paired with producer Jimmy Roach who cut four sides with them. Those tracks were shelved once label president Henry Allen heard them and set about looking for another producer.
Enter Thom Bell, who Allen hired to work for Atlantic. Given a choice of any artist on the roster, he picked the Spinners as he had been a fan of their music since their first hit on Tri-Phi Records "That's What Girls Are For" in 1961. During the summer of 1972, Bell worked with the group on four sides, since Atlantic had already spent $20,000$ on the abandoned Jimmy Roach sessions and did not want to spend much more.
He composed a song written in three chords and took it to Sigma Studios, home of the Sound Of Philadelphia. Veteran musicians Bobby Eli, Ronnie Baker, Earl Young, Roland Chambers, Larry Washington and Vince Montana played on the track, with Don Renaldo directing the strings. The musicians mused at the simplicity of the song and set about jamming, taking all of forty minutes to record the music track.
Bell's writing partner lyricist Linda Creed, was in the process of setting up her wedding and unable to help with the lyrics, begged off. Thom scoured the Sigma offices to find a lyricist and then walked into Bunny Sigler's office to find Phil Hurtt who had gone to high school with Bell and was more than ready to write lyrics that would fit Bell's exacting standards. Overnight, Hurtt wrote the words that would create an R&B classic.
The Spinners went in and nailed the vocals on "I'll Be Around". Alas, it was relegated to the B side of "How Could I Let You Get Away" which was their official debut Atlantic single. DJs who played the record, flipped the single and found the hit in playing "I'll Be Around" and forgetting the other side. They were right as the tune took off in a big way and proved that DJ's were influencing the pop music landscape. The single hit the Hot 100 chart for the week ending September 16, 1972 at #74 and peaked at #3 but spent five weeks at #1 on the R&B charts, an auspicious start to a stellar third career for a supposedly third rate band.

1972 ... the same year I met the boy that changed my life . ... we were 16 & 17 & he dedicated this song to me and we’ve been together every since...we got married in 1975 ... 3 kids and 8 grandchildren later we’re still going strong 💪🏾he proved this to be true.... I Love me some him❤️

I'll turn 76 this coming Saturday ( 9/25/21...born 9/25/ 45 ). When this song came out I was 27 years old, and it seems like yesterday! We had the most awesome music in that era, and probably didn't realize it at the time. Anyone reading this who is young please take special note: time passes very quickly, enjoy every minute of your precious life. Stay away from substances that'll cut that precious life way too short. Many are dying around us of addiction to opoids...fatal overdoses are common in all aprts of the country. Living to old age may have its problems, but it sure beats checking out in your teens, 20s or 30s - causing untold grief to the people left behind.

I remembered hearing this song for the first time around 1972...I was four, and my Dad first purchased his 1972 Chevrolet Caprice...he washed it, waxed it, and took me and my brother a ride around Chicago. I'm 66 yrs old and still rocking to this music.
*I still am amazed at how vibrant the string section is. You can hear the scratch when the rosin on the bows go against the strings. I'm a musician and sound engineer. The string section is the most difficult to reproduce on a synthesizer or even a computer. Computers can only Sample but never generate from Scratch, the sound of strings. However, this arrangement is the best music. The musicians and the backing band are absolutely the best. You can feel the magic because everything went perfect. This song will Be Around for Forever*

I don't care how much money you have or how pretty you are,
you can't buy class or style. These brothers had it, still do for the surviving
members and out sold every r&b band in the 70's. They never get the full recognition
they deserve. I saw them live at Magic Mountain outside L.A. of all places in the 70's. First come
first serve, the seats went down from the entrance about 30 rows and 50 feet.
Once they opened the ropes, I raced in to get a front row seat at the bottom.
there were so many people. I remember getting pushed and I rolled down 20 rows
to the front row. I was bleeding from my head. I stayed put and danced (very
woozy) from opening song to finale. My friends then took me to the hospital

57 this year grew up with this 😍 music.
In the 70's when I was a kid my Dad would sometimes take me to work with him on the weekends. If I sat very quietly they would let me sit next to the engineer...little did I realize it was Sigma Sound Studio and Joe Tarscia, I was watching musical history be made. My Dad was in the horn section for many of these groups. What a gift these great talents gave us. Long live Philly Sound!

I grew up in a Suburb of Detroit Motown was all over the Radio. I remember when there was ONLY AM Radio no FM.. lol I remember a time when there was no Microwave Ovens lol only stovetop or the oven lol I also remember back in the 1960's our Milk was Delivered by the Milkman lol

When my Daughter was a baby whenever I couldnt calm her down I would put this song on and dance around with her in my arms and it would make her smile, she is almost 20 years old now and sometimes I just wish I could still do that when she is having a bad day.

Takes me back to a time where soul music was the only thing that sooth my restless soul and a revel heart. It was a time when my father's love and understand inspired me. A gentle giant of only 5'10" tall but his calm grace help me in so many ways. This song was a statement of his love to me and my brother and sister which he lived up to till his death in 2003. So when I play this I hear his words of support all around me . . . . .

Superb! I'm German, 60 years old and I love black music. This was the time I realized something was wrong with me. I have/never had any interest in the music of my country.
